Yesterday, AVSI-USA participated in the monthly "Wednesday of Reflection" hosted by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) Representation in #Haiti. The event brought together a diverse panel of experts to discuss the important role of Haitian youth in shaping the nation’s future. IDB Representative Corinne Cathala emphasized the significance of investing in young people, who are a major force for positive change in Haiti. A recent survey revealed that 40% of young Haitians consider better access to education, increased security, and improved healthcare as essential for enhancing their future prospects. Panelists, including Armelle Rose William and Jean Gaby C. from AVSI Haiti, shared inspiring stories of resilience and hope. Celestin highlighted AVSI’s initiatives that provide academic support and mentorship, showcasing how determination and the right opportunities can empower youth. Videographer Vincent Theodore urged a shift in narratives to highlight Haiti’s beauty and potential, advocating for positive storytelling. The discussions underscored a collective call for increased youth involvement in community projects, fostering a sense of belonging and growth within Haiti. It was a powerful reminder of the need to support young Haitians as they strive to contribute to their communities and build a brighter future. AVSI Foundation is honored to participate in these critical conversations, and we extend our gratitude to the IDB for hosting this event. Special thanks to Jean Gaby Celestin for sharing his insights and for uplifting the voices of those dedicated to advancing the cause of Haitian youth.

Substantial progress in reducing global poverty has been made over the past three decades; however, increasingly frequent and recurrent crises along with protracted conflicts and displacement threaten to derail development progress. In the face of these realities, governments and donors are looking for cost-effective, sustainable interventions that can be applied at scale, and focus on strengthening resilience capacities. The USAID - Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance funded Graduating to Resilience Activity, implemented by AVSI-USA in partnership with American Institutes for Research and Trickle Up, adapted the cost-effective graduation approach to help refugee and Ugandan host community households in the Kamwenge district to graduate from conditions of food insecurity and fragile livelihoods to self-reliance and resilience. Delivering an integrated set of interventions over a 30-month period, the Activity graduated 73% of households during the first cohort of implementation. To understand whether these gains were sustainable and whether households were resilient without Activity support, the Activity followed up with households 18 months after implementation ended and found that 62% of households maintained their graduation status. To learn more about how participant households were doing 18 months after implementation check out the technical brief "Building Resilience through the Graduation Approach". https://lnkd.in/d73HkZ8c

Through the “Welcomed through work” project, funded by U.S. Department of State Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration, AVSI Foundation developed the Casa Bom Samaritano (Good Samaritan Center), which offers Venezuelan migrants and their families a safe place to stay for up to three months while they develop their Portuguese and professional skills and find employment. The house is built on shared responsibility, with the residents taking ownership of maintenance and community activities. On August 14, the AVSI BRASIL team at the Casa Bom Samaritano was pleased to welcome Porter Illi, PRM’s Deputy Regional Refugee Coordinator. Porter visited with a couple of families staying at the house to hear about their journeys of resilience and how AVSI is working with them to chart a way forward in a new country. Stay tuned for more information. #peopleforDevelopment

From August 6-8, 2024, the “Our Resilience Pathways” Graduation Marketplace in Kampala highlighted the success of USAID's Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance’s seven-year Graduating to Resilience Activity. This initiative implemented by AVSI Foundation with Trickle Up and American Institutes for Research transformed 13,680 refugee and host community households in Kamwenge, Uganda, with 80% moving from extreme poverty to self-reliance. U.S. Ambassador to Uganda, H.E. William W. Popp, celebrated the program’s achievements, including a 96% self-efficacy rate, 96.4% business diversification, and $1.8 million in savings. Over 300 participants explored interactive booths showcasing the tools and experiences behind these outcomes. Ambassador Popp emphasized, "The most inspiring aspect of this program is the changes we have seen in the lives of Ugandan and refugee women, children, and families." The event was both a celebration and a call to action, showing how the Graduation Approach can create lasting change. Next up, join us for another global event in Washington, D.C., where we’ll share the results and impact of this initiative and bring together diverse voices to discuss the future potential of the Graduation Approach. As we conclude the seven-year USAID - Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance-funded Graduating to Resilience Activity, we're excited to share key results from this transformative journey. Led by AVSI Foundation, in partnership with the American Institutes for Research and Trickle Up, this initiative in Kamwenge District tested the Graduation Approach with 13,200 ultra-poor refugee and host community households, helping them consistently meet their basic needs without external assistance. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be sharing insights and outcomes as we prepare for our DC Graduating to Resilience Learning Summit—an event that will bring together experts from the Graduation Community of Practice, as well as the wider public, to analyze results, discuss key learnings, and explore future directions for this vital poverty alleviation tool. Ending #poverty starts with an asset transfer! 💵 Through our program, #GraduatingToResilience, we’re seeing firsthand how crucial asset transfer is in supporting our participants in #ExtremePoverty. By providing targeted households with cash support via mobile money and pre-paid cards, we are helping families meet their immediate needs, invest in their futures, and build lasting resilience. Through the Graduation Approach—combining financial aid, asset transfer, skills training, and more—we’re not just addressing short-term needs; we’re paving the way for sustainable livelihoods and self-reliance.
