Rejection is a part of the process. If you have a PhD, your work trained you on handling negative results. As such, you know you have the power to adjust course, learn from the data and get the one “yes” you need. #phd #jobsearch

Don't stop. Rejection hurts, but its only temporary. It only takes one "yes" to change everything. #PhDGoals

PhDs should stop peer-reviewing until this changes. #phd https://lnkd.in/eQ86nseJ

Start every bullet point on your résumé with a transferable skill because this is the corporate speak that high managers, who typically have bachelors degrees or less, use the most. Then move to a technical or niche skill. Any specific skill that you are trained on that has a high barrier to entry and ideally is relevant to the job you’re applying to. Then end with a qualified result. Use numerical values even if the number is less than 10. It doesn’t matter what the number is, it just matters that you’re speaking in terms of numbers and more generally deliverables, instead of just the amount of time you did something. #phdlife #phd #resumetips #jobsearchtips

If you have a PhD and are mid-career, you must adapt or die. This job market is brutal to anyone over 40. Check out these job search strategies for avoiding the overqualified label after 40. #phd #jobsearch #ageism #overqualified
If you have a PhD and are mid-career, you must adapt or die. This job market is brutal to anyone over 40. Here are job search strategies for avoiding the overqualified label after 40: 1. Show That You’re Adaptable & Willing to Learn New Things. One of the biggest misconceptions about older candidates is that they’re not as trainable as their younger counterparts. Employers want candidates who can quickly adapt to new technologies, systems, and workflows. Make it clear in your resume, LinkedIn profile, and interviews that you’re not stuck in your ways. Demonstrate that you’re flexible, open to feedback, and excited about learning new things. The message you want to send is that you’re a lifelong learner, not someone who peaked 10 years ago. 2. Tailor Your Resume to Avoid Looking Overqualified. PhDs are often seen as overqualified for many industry roles. You don’t need to list every position you’ve ever held or every skill you’ve ever developed. Instead, focus on the specific qualifications and experiences that are most relevant to the job you’re applying for. Consider cutting out older positions that don’t add value or tweaking your job titles and descriptions to match the level of the position you’re aiming for. Remember, you’re not trying to impress other PhDs—you’re trying to show hiring managers that you can solve their specific problems. 3. Avoid Using Jargon & Overly Technical Language. One way to connect with hiring managers is to speak their language—not the language of academia. The reality is that many hiring managers don’t have PhDs, and they may not even have advanced degrees. Simplify your language and focus on how your skills can add value to the company. Remember, it’s not about proving how smart you are. It’s about showing that you can help the company meet its goals. 4. Prove You’re Not Looking To Outshine Your Boss. Another concern employers have about older candidates is that they’ll want to leapfrog into a leadership role. Make it clear that you’re excited about the opportunity to contribute at the level the job requires. You don’t need to be the boss—you’re focused on collaborating with a team and driving results. Hiring managers don’t want to feel like they’re going to be challenged or overshadowed by someone who has more experience than they do. 5. Focus on How You Can Bring Value, Not How Long You’ve Been Doing Something. A BIG mistake older candidates often make is talking about how long they’ve been doing something as a measure of their expertise. For hiring managers, it’s less about how long you’ve done something and more about the specific results you’ve achieved. Avoid statements like, “I’ve been doing this for 20 years,” and instead focus on how your experience translates into actionable benefits for the employer. If you're mid-career with a PhD, now is the time to adapt your job search strategy. Adapt now, or your career with stagnate and eventually die. #phd #jobsearch #ageism
