A University of North Carolina at Charlotte team demonstrated a freeform telescope that requires minimal alignment steps and no post-polishing: https://bit.ly/3CxzlH9 Designing with freeform optics makes it possible to correct imaging systems to high-performance levels in a compact format, but remains largely unexplored in literature. This paper from #OPG_OPTCON presents twenty-seven sub-aperture tilted knife-edge tests to evaluate the telescope’s correlation between form error and image quality. Throughout the study, researchers determined that the manufacturability of freeform systems can be optimized by a tradeoff of tolerances between form error and alignment. ALL EYES ON GOOGLE ANDROID XR. Wednesday morning kicked off with a plenary session from Google at SPIE AR/VR/MR. Hugo Swart introduced the newly released Android XR OS, which was developed in collaboration with Samsung Electronics and Qualcomm. Centered around AI, this operating system is designed to support various extended reality devices from several manufacturers, including Lynx Mixed Reality, Sony, and XREAL. The first device to utilize this OS will be Samsung's headset, Project Moohan - meaning "infinity" in Korean - powered by the Snapdragon® XR2+ Gen 2 chipset. Adding to the excitement, Qualcomm's Said Bakadir made a surprise appearance to discuss the development of the Snapdragon Spaces™ XR Platform. This platform is tailored to provide OEMs, developers, and users with top-tier features, services, and an operating system optimized for immersive devices down to the silicon level. The session ended on a high note with Google issuing a call to action for hardware manufacturers to get involved. Interested? The new "nano-oscillator" that explores the boundary between classical and quantum physics: https://bit.ly/4aGdeuX An #OPG_Optica study describes an instrument that takes advantage of the phenomenon of levitating nano-objects within a tightly focused laser beam to trap two nanospheres inside a dual optical tweezer generated by two copropagating lasers operating at different wavelengths. The results open the way for future studies on systems of strongly coupled oscillators, including their implementation in optical cavities, both in the classical and quantum regimes.
