Big kudos to Scott Institute Associate Director Valerie Karplus and faculty affiliate Chris Pistorius, who co-organized an important conference on advancing green iron and steel last week 👇
Professors Valerie Karplus (EPP) and Chris Pistorius (Department of Materials Science and Engineering at CMU) of Carnegie Mellon University's College of Engineering co-organized the Conference on Global Pathways to Green Iron and Steel in Beijing last week at Tsinghua University's Institute for Carbon Neutrality in collaboration with professors Xiliang Zhang and Yuyan Weng at Tsinghua's Institute of Energy, Environment, and Economy. CMU students Elina Hoffmann (EPP) and Annabel Hu (Heinz) were part of the visiting delegation. The conference took place during a week-long visit that also included site tours and research exchange as part of the CMU-led Industrial Decarbonization, Analysis, Benchmarking, and Action (INDABA) Partnership. Established in 2023, INDABA involves ongoing collaboration on decarbonizing industry among five universities in four countries. The team visited Hebei Iron and Steel Group's Xuansteel Hydrogen Direct Reduced Iron Plant and toured hydrogen infrastructure in Zhangjiakou City, China.
