In other news today, Delta Lake UniForm is now Generally Available. No more data silos, interoperability FTW! UniForm allows you to use a single table format for your lakehouse, getting the top-of-the-line performance and features of Databricks and Delta Lake, but being able to access the data using *any* engine that supports *any* of the common lakehouse formats Delta Lake, Iceberg, or Hudi.

It is rare I find an article that rings so true. This is also why interrupting a programmer is so expensive. You are interrupting the design process. Even if, especially if, they are not typing. The questions this drives home to me is "how can we enhance the thinking and designing process before we type?" I know that UML (Unversal Modeling Language) and visual design helps me greatly. These can be Entity Relationship Diagrams from the Database side, so long as you have a dynamic view of the system as well. This is also why just "read the code" is a slog. You have to extract out all of the implicit changes that went in, and even more obscure ones that didn't go in. This is also why eXtreme programming helps: it keeps the problem size small and understandable. But The thing that people don't emphasize from XP is the Shared Metaphor. That is the THING. And that may well be the result of a Big Design Up Front. So long as that metaphor, that model, is easily consumable, and easily tractable as you discover new things along the way.

I once asked a lead engineer on Angular: Which is better: Angular or React? His response: "Both require good engineering to be effective." So, my developer friends, consider this a reminder that "frameworks" like Diátaxis are fine, but they still require good engineering--such as UX, information architecture, style, maintenance processes, and so on--to create great documentation experiences for your customers. Alas, the framework alone isn't enough.

15 years ago I contributed 2 chapters to Clean Code(https://a.co/d/5guLEzq), both related to threading. A second edition is coming out, and it occurs to me that while I don't do much direct threaded/parallel programming anymore, many issues around parallel execution still occur in systems where the stack "takes care" of all those details. Here's a collection of recent examples. This is a draft of a personal blog. The second version will go on the Industrial Logic, Inc. website. A new Jepsen report from Kyle Kingsbury looking at the Kafka-compatible Buf: https://lnkd.in/gijxaHzr It includes broader findings about the Kafka protocol and implementation too: "We also characterize four issues related to Kafka more generally, including the lack of authoritative documentation for transaction semantics, a deadlock in the official Java client, and write loss, aborted read, and torn transactions caused by the lack of message ordering constraints in the Kafka transaction protocol. These issues affect Kafka, Bufstream, and (presumably) other Kafka-compatible systems, and remain unresolved."
