Advancing Public Health Policy Research Through Enhanced Data Analysis and Visualization Techniques Researchers in the field of public health policy are facing challenges in integrating and analyzing diverse data types, especially in addressing the U.S. opioid crisis. Academic programs have started incorporating data visualization and analysis skills into their curricula to better equip the new generation of researchers. A two-step training process has been developed to help learners discover relevant data and interpret metadata using network visualization techniques. These techniques help uncover critical relationships among various data sources, improve understanding of public health issues, and aid in identifying trends and patterns. Training in data skills can significantly improve policy research and development, and advanced data visualization techniques can enhance the effectiveness of public health policies and decision-making processes. Research was published this week on the current status of and future directions for assessing technology acceptance for digital (mental) health interventions. The article concludes: "As digital health continues to change the landscape of health-promoting settings, it remains important to comprehend how new technologies are viewed in order to assist their uptake. Gaining insight into the factors that influence the uptake and effectiveness of digital interventions could thus help reduce the gap between the demand and supply for personalized DMHIs while improving the access to both in-person and digital interventions. CAIS is excited to announce the publication of an IS Panel Report, "Considering Older Adults in Mainstream Technology Development: A Panel Report from AIS Women’s Network ICIS 2022", by authors Michael Milovich, Rowan University, Cindy Riemenschneider, Baylor University, Iris Reychav, Ariel University, Heiko Gewald,  Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences. The abstract: "As the world’s population continues to live longer, the consideration/inclusion of older adults in mainstream technology development is paramount. Organizations that develop software and hardware for mainstream technology will miss a significant market segment if they fail to consider the aging population. The following questions are addressed in this paper as shared by three academic experts in this research domain. What are the prominent definitions of social inclusion? 2) How do older adults (65 years or older) fit that definition? What are some key interpretations that placed older adults as a socially excluded group in mainstream technology? How have IT vendors included aging adults? And, what are the ways IT vendors have not included aging adults? How do you encourage vendors/software developers to consider cognitive age versus chronological age in new app development? Points of convergence and divergence among the researchers are reported and suggestions for future research addressing the inclusion of older adults in mainstream technology development are provided." New Study in The Lancet Regional Health – Americas Integrates Publicly Available Data Revealing the Effects of Traffic Congestion on Health Services Accessibility and Equity. Cali, May 4, 2024 - A groundbreaking study, recently published in The Lancet Regional Health – Americas, introduces an innovative methodology to uncover and measure the intricate links between health equity and traffic congestion. This research presents a novel perspective on urban health dynamics by analyzing travel times to essential health services. This low-budget endeavor is conducted by a diverse team of local and international volunteers, leveraging open and big data to drive impactful insights. The proof-of-concept assessed accessibility to critical services such as haemodialysis, radiotherapy, and tertiary emergency care. Notably, stakeholders, researchers, and local data scientists actively shaping urban and health services planning played a pivotal role in conceptualizing, implementing, and reporting these test cases. In addition to the publication, the study introduces an interactive web-based platform that empowers readers to test assumptions and explore different scenarios. Using choropleth maps (heat maps), simple graphs, and descriptive statistics, the data for different traffic congestion levels is presented in a clear and accessible manner, fostering shared understanding and agreement on objectives. A key highlight of the haemodialysis report is its identification of urban sectors where new services could significantly enhance accessibility, offering a promising solution to address existing inequities. Dr. Russell James Reveals What Really Motivates Donors What truly motivates donors to give to your cause? According to Dr. Russell James, a leading expert on charitable giving, the key is understanding donor identity and helping them achieve a meaningful victory. Dr. James shared his insights in a recent webinar for the Donor Participation Project. He explained that a donor’s identity comes from their personal values, relationships, and life experiences. As fundraisers, we need to connect a donor’s identity to our mission through the fundraising process. We do this by first listening to donors and learning about what motivates them. We then present a challenge, like an opportunity to fund a new program, that allows them to achieve a victory meaningful to their identity. When they give, it enhances their identity in a personally fulfilling way. For example, an environmental charity might survey donors on the values and life events that shaped their support for conservation. A donor may share that a childhood experience with their grandmother fostered their love of nature. The charity could then frame a fundraising appeal around continuing that legacy by protecting wetlands, helping that donor achieve a victory that honors their grandmother’s memory. Rather than just sharing stories about organizational impact, fundraisers need to understand each donor’s hero story. We must ask questions to determine what gives their lives meaning and purpose. Small gifts often come from those seeking to remedy societal ills, while major donors usually want to share in the fruits of victory as part of a community. Appealing to a donor’s identity and desire for victory moves them from casual giver to lifetime champion. Continually learning, testing, and improving fundraising methods is key. As Dr. James said, “Progress, not perfection” should be our mantra. While the tools we use are constantly changing, human motivations remain the same. By focusing on donor identity and victory, we can build true relationships, gain larger gifts, and change more lives. Fundraisers would be wise to follow Dr. James’ data-driven advice.
