In vertical SaaS, the very best companies landed with a product solving a specific, burning pain point that horizontal solutions solved badly and then became broad product suites over time (ServiceTitan, Veeva Systems, Doximity, etc). My partner Gordon Ritter calls this “layering the cake”. In vertical AI, the landing wedges are much more brittle. While the painpoints they solve are very real (and often unaddressable by SaaS alone), they’re also much more likely to commodotize in the near term as the tech advances. 👀 Therefore, the need to layer the cake in vertical AI is much more urgent than in vertical SaaS. 👀 The best vertical AI CEOs not only recognize the dynamic, but talk about it openly. Helps those around them keep up the speed of innovation and their eyes on the bigger prize.

I had an amazing conversation with JJ Zhuang, Instacart’s Chief Architect, who has shepherded over 50 AI-driven initiatives to market across the org. ex Google CEO Eric Schmidt spoke at Stanford this week. Lots of nuggets here, but most interesting for the near term, Schmidt believes in the next year AI is set to make a big leap forward. He predicts AI will combine three important features: 1. Vast knowledge retention (1 million token models) 2. Text-to-action capability 3. Personal AI agent fleets While the full impact is unknown, everyone may soon command their own AI teams. Here's an example: Imagine you're developing new quantum computing algorithms. Your AI assistants could: - Continuously scan and synthesize global quantum research papers - Generate novel algorithm ideas based on this knowledge - Simulate and test these algorithms across various quantum architectures - Automatically document findings and prepare draft papers - Identify potential collaborators and draft outreach emails All initiated by a command like "Advance our quantum algorithm research." 🚀 Launch day! Very excited to share that you can now programmatically access resource-level cost data through the Vantage API! This API allows customers to access hundreds of supported resources (i.e. S3 Buckets, EBS Volumes, EC2 instances, etc.) across 8 different providers like Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud. Some really interesting aspects about this API: - You can use Vantage Query Language (VQL) for ad-hoc filtering of resources. So if you wanted to enumerate over all resources that had a particular cost allocation tag, that's supported out of the box (including Virtual Tags). - This API also supports management of Resource Reports. So if you had a Resource Report for all unattached EBS volumes that are over a certain cost threshold you can hit that Resource Report endpoint to see all the latest resources that meet that criteria on an ongoing basis. - We've integrated with hundreds of List/Describe APIs across all the providers to not only provide cost information in the API but also metadata from the service APIs themselves. Using that same EBS example above, this allows for you to see other attributes like iops or volume size with the cost data in a singular API. Extensibility through the API has always been part of the core ethos of Vantage from the very beginning. Over the last four years we've invested in having near-full coverage of all features available via the API and Terraform. One new feature is our new Daily DeepDigest tool that sends you a concise daily email including any new episodes from the trailing 24 hours from any podcasts you Subscribe to (on DeepCast). Think daily podcast cliff notes or podcast news ticker tape, with a hint of Morning Brew various brews or PitchBook News—it's increasing information throughput when you're pressed for time. And this feature is rapidly evolving to distill other key extractions from shows you're already interested in, but also exposing you to other shows you might be unfamiliar with that also have nuggets to share—and thus increasing your aperture yet still conscious of your time. Click the episode detail and you're off to an episode on DeepCast, where you can subsequently read a longer form distillation of that episode or go straight to the source and listen to the episode. 🚀 In April of 2023, Vantage launched beta support for OpenAI. It's been one of the most popular and fastest-adopted providers we've added support for. However, the APIs we were leveraging for beta support were a bit shaky and only intermittently available from the OpenAI side. We've been *eagerly* awaiting OpenAI to launch more robust billing and usage APIs and as of 22 days ago, they have delivered! As a result, I'm really excited to share our General Availability support for OpenAI on Vantage. Our team was able to very quickly execute on adopting the newly available APIs and now have progressed OpenAI to General Availability on Vantage which is available to all users across all tiers, including the free tier. The FireHydrant acquisition of Blameless signals a major shift in observability and incident management. My Partner Jaya and I just wrote about the looming "observability crisis"—how the explosion of data and tools has paradoxically made it harder to extract meaningful insights. This deal is a direct response to that crisis. By combining forces, FireHydrant and Blameless aim to build an end-to-end incident management platform to reimagine root cause analysis from the ground up. But to *truly* address the observability crisis, it will take more than consolidation. We need AI-driven systems that: → Provide natural language interfaces to query complex systems → Automatically generate and update incident response playbooks → Offer predictive maintenance by recognizing patterns across heterogeneous data sources → Synthesize post-mortem reports, distilling insights from terabytes of data Most critically, we need to ditch volume-based pricing models that incentivize data hoarding over problem-solving. Expect more moves as the market evolves to meet the demands of increasingly complex enterprise systems.

ISP Strategic Leadership, Engineering, and Operations As an organization scales, there is often a need to separate strategic technology leadership under the CTO from internal execution under engineering and operations management. This allows the CTO to focus on outward-facing duties while enabling streamlined operational efficiency. However, it's crucial to recognize the differing motivations and needs of these distinct technical roles. On one hand, engineers thrive on tackling interesting, challenging projects that push their abilities and knowledge. They value working alongside capable peers, genuine recognition of technical accomplishments, and contributing to products/services that reach the market. In contrast, operations teams should strive for repeatable processes, continual improvement, and driving efficiency at scale. Their priorities revolve around standardizing workflows, minimizing disruptions, and incrementally optimizing existing systems and procedures to maintain consistent service delivery as the company grows. An effective organizational structure acknowledges this dichotomy, fostering an environment that fuels engineering innovation while providing operations with the stability and process-orientation they require. Striking this balance enables the company to stay agile and innovative through its engineering efforts, while simultaneously scaling operational execution in a reliable and repeatable manner. Competitive compensation remains an important motivator across both domains. By properly aligning structural elements, motivational factors, and leadership priorities, a rapidly growing ISP can position itself to attract and retain top talent across engineering and operations, driving sustainable growth and success in the dynamic technology landscape.
