  • Designing a fair, financially sustainable pay rate for owner operator truck drivers. Modeling and Case Study

    The Engineering Economist

    DOI 10.1080/0013791X.2017.1414342

ABSTRACT Owner operator truck drivers have been dealing with a long-standing problem: compensation per distance. Owner operators who get paid according to these criteria get a fixed payment per distance traveled regardless of how long it takes to actually cover the distance. This means that there are numerous situations that truck drivers are working; yet they might be unpaid because the truck is not moving. To compensate for the unfairness of the pay…

To compensate for the unfairness of the pay rate models, owner operators have continuously increased their working hours. In addition, many studies have confirmed that a fair payment is among the most important factors that truck drivers take into consideration when deciding to leave a company. Consequently, an unfair pay rate, along with the hard labor conditions truck drivers suffer from, inevitably leads to high turnover rates. For all these reasons, our study aims at developing a fair, financially sustainable pay rate for owner operators that will help companies ensure a stable and highly experienced workforce by making sure that owner operators can cover the real expenses of their working activity. Finally, in order to prove that our pay rate was of practical use, we test the model on one of the largest Spanish agro-food companies.

  • Managing Waiting Tmes to Predict No-shows and Cancelations at a Children’s Hospital

Journal of Industrial Engineering and Management

Since long waits in hospitals have been found to be related to high rates of no-shows and cancelations, managing waiting times should be considered as an important tool that hospitals can use to reduce missed appointments. Taking into account that no-show and cancelation rates in hospitals have a great impact on the performance of health care systems, hospitals should see this as an improvement opportunity to increase profitability and to retain and acquire patients. This study provides an analysis for predicting no-show and cancelation rates correlated to waiting times, which health care managers might find useful to apply at their hospitals. Managers could supplement this model with financial data that would allow them to measure the economic impact of the different appointment-keeping behaviors in order to see the benefit of reducing waiting times. The analysis is based on a one-year experience at a US children's hospital.

  • The New Supply Chain in the Era of E-Retailers: A State-of-the-art Literature Review

    Dirección y Organización

E-commerce has been growing tremendously over the past few years, and traditional supply chains are now compelled to reinvent themselves. The main goal of this article is to develop a state-of-the-art literature review on the implications of the online channel for traditional supply chains, and to identify possible gaps between available literature and real management issues. This establishes a new framework that helps academics, researchers, and practitioners better understand new types of supply chains and inspire future research. We focus our analysis on both pure e-retailers and multi-channel retailers. Pure e-retailers sell products only through the online channel, and multi-channel retailers operate through both traditional and online channels. This integration between channels brings new opportunities for traditional brick-and-mortar retailers, but it also requires a lot of trade-off decisions. Market cannibalization, which refers to a decrease in retail sales as a result of the introduction of the online channel, is one of the biggest challenges companies face. We identify e-commerce adoption and network design, customer service, pricing, e-fulfillment, inventory management, reverse logistics, and environmental issues as the main topics regarding new supply chains.
