Martin & Ottaway is a preeminent maritime engineering consulting firm located in Tinton Falls, New Jersey. It is recognized as one of the United States' foremost marine consulting firms, assisting maritime clients with complex and cutting-edge technical, operational, and financial problems for over 100 years. M&O provides vessel appraisals, surveys, and marine engineering consultation on craft ranging from recreational boats to oceangoing cargo ships and passenger liners. Among M&O’s many clients are ship owners, financial institutions, attorneys, governments, Internal Revenue Services, and underwriters.

The firm covers US East Coast ports from Norfolk, Virginia to Portland, Maine on a daily basis, with additional worldwide assignment on many unique projects. The firm is an incorporated partnership that has managed successful ownership transitions since its inception in 1875.

M&O has a position for an early career engineer/marine surveyor who is interested in varied and challenging professional work in a small company. A desire to learn and to interact with a wide variety of clients, projects and maritime settings is required, along with an awareness that advancement will demand superior skills in science, technology, communications, and analysis.

Responsibilities:

The work will involve the widest possible engineering tasks ranging from surveying, to proposal writing, to design, to salvage, to regulatory work, to forensic analysis, and will involve substantial travel and irregular hours. When not on assignment, employees can expect to be in the office generally from 8am to 5pm; however, there is some flexibility for hybrid work after successfully completing a 6-month probationary period.

The position requires great individual responsibility, but with the added benefit of close mentoring and training by industry leading senior personnel, and with substantial continued education benefits.

Qualifications:

Ideal candidates would have no less than a bachelor’s degree in engineering and/or an established USCG (or equivalent) marine engineering license with 3 to 8 years of maritime engineering experience. Additional skills that would benefit a potential candidate include proficiency with MS Office Suite and AutoCAD, and certification as an ISM auditor or as an accredited appraiser with the American Society of Appraisers.

The salary minimum would be $85,000 for an entry level hire, and would increase depending on experience. Benefits include the following:

  • Full healthcare, including dental and vision
  • Company funded training and educational opportunities
  • Company paid professional memberships
