Warm dense matter (#WDM) can be found in astrophysical objects and is created during inertial confinement fusion. An important method to investigate WDM is X-ray Thomson scattering. Researchers from European XFEL, the Center for Advanced Systems Understanding (CASUS) at HZDR and Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) have now recorded ultra-high-resolution X-ray Thomson scattering spectra with an energy resolution improved more than tenfold compared to previous approaches. The team have published their findings in the journal Physical Review B, which honored the work with an “Editor’s Suggestion”. As the researchers report, the innovative method will enable WDM diagnostics with unprecedented accuracy. “These exciting new capabilities at the European XFEL allow for unprecedented insights into the behavior of matter at extreme conditions,” explains lead author Thomas Gawne from CASUS' Young Investigator Group “Frontiers of Computational Quantum Many-Body Theory” led by Tobias Dornheim. Dornheim recently received funding for a laser fusion project from the #EuropeanUnion via its #JustTransitionFund. Specifically, he plans to make X-ray Thomson scattering evaluation accessible beyond the small group many-body system simulation experts. If he succeeds, laser physicists at European XFEL and elsewhere could design their experiments in a more targeted manner than it is possible today. The XI International Symposium "Ultrafast Dynamics and Ultrafast Bandgap Photonics" is being held this week in the beautiful island of Crete, for the third year in a row, https://lnkd.in/eSrSfeKS I had the honor to start the conference with a plenary talk on how two-dimensional coherent nonlinear spectroscopy of superconductors allows for quantum tomography of light-controlled non-equilibrium states, with new breakthrough results, obtained in collaboration with Jigang Wang's experimental group at Ames Lab, on how a pulse-pair of intense Terahertz laser fields with controllable relative phase can image and induce light-controlled superconductivity. Having observed and controlled with a pulse-pair interference of different superconductor excitations, is room temperature light-induced superconductivity next?

In the low-field limit we derive an effective quantum dimer model, analyzing how the extensive ground-state degeneracy at zero field is lifted by an order-by-disorder scenario. We support our analysis by studying the gap closing of the high-field phase using series expansions. For 𝐽2>𝐽3, we find a columnar phase at low fields, followed by a clock-ordered phase stabilized by resonating plaquettes at intermediate field values, and an emergent three-dimensional (3D)-XY quantum phase transition to the polarized high-field phase. For 𝐽3>𝐽2, an order-by-disorder mechanism stabilizes a distinct 𝒌=(0,0) order and a quantum phase transition in the 3D-Ising universality class is observed. Further, we discuss the possible implementation of the columnar- and clock-ordered phase in existing Rydberg atom quantum simulators. When taking into account the full algebraically decaying long-range interactions on the ruby lattice, we find that long-range interactions favor the same ground state as the quantum fluctuations induced by a transverse field, which could make the ruby lattice a promising candidate for the realization of a clock-ordered phase.

📝New analog simulators can facilitate the study of ultrafast dynamics processes ICFO researchers Javier Argüello Luengo, Javier Rivera Dean, Philipp Stammer led by the ICREA Prof. at ICFO Maciej Lewenstein and in collaboration with other institutes all over the globe (Aarhus University, University of California and Guangdong Technion-Israel Institute of Technology [GTIIT] ) have theoretically proposed a new experimental platform based on analog simulation with atom clouds to study high-harmonic generation, an ultrafast dynamic process whose study challenges conventional computational methods. Their simulator can be adapted to approach a wide range of complex phenomena, opening the door to regimes that theory and direct experimentation are struggling to reach. Such transport takes on a variety of forms, including local diffusion, cross-membrane pumping, motor-driven motion, and advective flows. Intracellular networks of cytoskeletal highways (including microtubule and actin networks) serve to direct motor-driven transport as well as defining cytoplasmic flow patterns.  At a larger scale, transport between cells in tissues is mediated by diffusion through the extracellular matrix, flows associated with tissue deformation, and the formation of cytonemes and other bridging structures. Recent experimental advances that allow for tracking of dynamic cargo at high spatiotemporal resolution have helped shed light on the regulation and organization of intracellular transport. Furthermore, dynamic imaging data has highlighted the importance of extensive organelle networks and inter-organelle contact sites in mediating the distribution and delivery of cellular components. Theoretical efforts to understand the interplay of spatial architecture and transport dynamics help to place experimental measurements within a quantitative and conceptual framework for cellular organization. This focus session will bring together experimentalists and theorists working on various aspects of intra- and inter-cellular transport to highlight new emerging work, exchange ideas, seed new collaborations and create a strong community of researchers to drive the field forward.

The #QTech 2024 conference is about to start: Organized by PremC and academically run by BERLIN QUANTUM, it will open the doors for participants tomorrow morning on the site of Freie Universität Berlin. https://lnkd.in/d2NRy9dM The growing ability to manipulate quantum systems is paving the way for a second quantum revolution, and a number of initiatives worldwide have been formed to foster quantum technologies. These exciting novel applications exploit specific quantum properties that are not accessible with classical resources, such as superposition and entanglement of individual quantum systems. The objective of the QTech conference, which will take place on September 10-12, 2024, in Berlin, is to present the latest developments of quantum technologies in the domains of quantum communication, computation, simulation, sensors and metrology, both in their implementation using various platforms -from atoms and ions to solid states, superconducting circuits and optics- as well as in their conceptual and theoretical foundations.
