Cosmic count exceeds expectation The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) detector on board the International Space Station National Laboratory has found more #cosmic rays made of deuterons – atomic nuclei made up of a proton and a neutron – than expected. The finding adds to the growing list of unexpected results from the space-based detector, which was assembled #atCERN and has detected more than 238 billion cosmic rays of particles of various kinds since it started taking data in 2011. Breakthrough in rapid cooling for BASE antiprotons In an article published by the Physical Review Letters, the Baryon Antibaryon Symmetry Experiment (BASE) presents a new experimental device that makes it possible to reduce the cooling time of antiprotons from 15 hours to just 8 minutes. Using a double Penning cooling trap, this considerable gain makes it possible to carry out measurements of the fundamental properties of antiprotons with unmatched precision and is a new milestone in the collaboration’s study of #antimatter. CERN for the environment In 2023, CERN and GTT (Gaztransport & Technigaz), started a collaboration to develop liquid hydrogen carriers. This project aims to provide a scalable technological solution to store and carry liquid hydrogen and thus contribute to the emerging sustainable hydrogen supply chain. Physics runs are not an #olympics modality, but #LHCRun3 just hit another record all the same. 🥇 In the past 3 weeks, the #LHC produced more than one inverse femtobarn of data per day – equivalent to about 100 trillion proton collisions delivered to the experiments – with a peak of 1.48 inverse femtobarns of data collected over a sliding 24-hour window just last week. That’s how many collisions per second? 🤔 During first run of the LHC, the #HiggsBoson was discovered with (only) 12 inverse femtobarns.
