🎓 Two years ago, I had the honor of graduating from MIT with a master's in supply chain management and delivering the student speech at our commencement. Stay curious, seek out new knowledge, and stay updated with industry trends. As I'm nearing the end of my first month at MIT Supply Chain Management Master's Program, here are the key viewpoints that resonated the most with me : 📢 1. Prioritize your priorities through self-awareness ⌛️: While it's understandable to be overwhelmed by the abundance of lectures, clubs, career events, social meetups, and capstone projects, it is vital that we introspect ourselves, cultivate self-awareness, and practice ruthless prioritization. I believe this is a very important skill that will help us stay on track, not just at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) but even after we graduate and enter the corporate world. Managers appreciate a candidate's ability to discern which projects to delegate and which ones to take ownership of. 2. Focus only on what you can do and what is in your control 🧠: A lot of times, we might be putting all our energy into things we cannot change or control. This will not only drain all your energy, but other people may start to see you as unduly negative and critical. The key is to focus your energy on those things that you can influence. This will enable you to make effective changes. If you do this, you will find that your circle of influence starts to increase, and others around you will see you as an effective person. This model is based on one of my favorite books by Stephen Covey, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People (1989). Covey distinguishes between proactive people, who focus on what they can do and influence, and reactive people, who focus their energy on things beyond their control. 3. Harness the power of your MIT community or family 🌎: Here at MIT, you are not just a student, you are part of the larger MIT SCM family. I feel incredibly fortunate to join this 'inventory' or collection of knowledge, expertise, support, and opportunity. I feel very comfortable reaching out to anyone for help, including my peers, faculty, alums, and mentors. I will do my best to continue this amazing culture and try to appreciate and leverage the power of the community. Do you tend to focus your energy on things out of your control? 🎓 Today marks the first day of my classes after 7 years 🚀 And wow! what a difference those years of practical experience make! As I sat in my classes today - Innovation Science, Strategic Management, Lean Manufacturing, and Practical Systems Thinking - I was constantly excited with the theories behind every tool we used in my day to day job as we go through lectures. Those who know me can attest to my enthusiasm, but today was different. I had an emotional moment during my lean manufacturing lecture. The professor emphasized the importance of having a product model for building new products or transforming existing ones. That hit home! I thought, "This is exactly what I've been doing in my 9-5 job all these years!". This is precisely why I returned to academia. It's not only about earning a degree; it's about understanding the science and theories behind what I do every day. Just one day in, I'm already buzzing with excitement about the opportunities that lie ahead. I'm here to rediscover, to grow, and to connect the dots between practice and theory. “By thinking and making people think, we help the development of any organization.” Glad to share that last Thursday I delivered my 827th session at IESE Business School. This time in Barcelona. The Tesla Motors business case method discussed with 500 participants (IESE PDD Alumni Reunion). Among the many photos of the event, I think this one stands out. It conveys the desire to share and maximum attention. One of the reasons why I enjoy the sessions at IESE so much is because of the case method methodology. The best translation I have seen of what happens in the winning management committees, in a classroom. What is called the socratic method. A teaching approach that emphasizes critical thinking and active participation thru the use of questioning, rather than simply conveying information. It empowers participants to become lifelong learners who are curious, reflective, and open-minded. I recommend bringing the Socratic method more often to the board and management teams, convinced of its positive impact. I see it and have seen it in successful companies. Very active participation both with raised hands, active listening and reflection throughout the session based on the questions asked. Very good vibes!
