The world of startups is being split into two by the arrival of generative AI (GenAI), and those who can leverage this new technology ahead of their peers will have a significant advantage in attracting funding, according to Dave Richards, co-founder and managing partner of Capria Ventures.

Heard from last week’s AI conference at MIT (a mix of VC, startups, vendors and students). What is getting funding at 8 figure valuations is: 1) customized aggregation of domain specific training sets with commercially available LLM adding domain specific prompting. (Dozens of “domains” already funded this way as startups) 2) aggregation of results across multiple commercial LLM api providers combined with domain specific training and prompting Vincent Granville David DeBonis

I may be off here but I personally have seen a lot of new startups really pushing the envelope with ai things but very few existing ones (older than 2 years) pivoting their offering or roadmaps at all. They seem to add useful but a little generic “chat with your data in the platform” feature and then continue on with the PMF plan from pre-seed. If you are a Seed to Series A startup, make sure your team has taken a moment to consider if the roadmap pre-gpt is still the lever to pull now.

Morning of #deeptech talks and focusing on how can we increase our TechTransfer in the future. The round table with Mitiga Solutions, ACCIÓ and Tech Barcelona rise awareness of investors who want to invest in early seed phases and that it becomes a general feeling that sparks our motivation to help more Universitat Pompeu Fabra research projects to become market solutions. Nice data point is that 43% of the DeepTech startups in Catalonia region are spinoffs, so when we say “nearly half of the deeptech market comes from techtransfer” is quite true now 😊
