This doctoral project focuses on developing and integrating advanced information processing strategies, including AI and neuromorphic solutions, within robots. Emphasizing edge implementations, it aims to enhance real-time interaction in complex, dynamic environments, enabling robots to cooperate with humans and other agents. Applications include service robotics and telepresence operations, ensuring safe and effective bidirectional interactions among machines, people, and their surroundings. A key aspect of the project involves leveraging in-memory computing and neuromorphic computing to achieve ultra low power and efficiency. These technologies aim to significantly boost the computational capabilities of robots, fostering more autonomous and intelligent behavior in service and telepresence roles. Applicants are expected to have a background in electronic, control, mechatronic, biomedical, mechanical, or computer engineering or related fields. However, this is not limiting, and other STEM MSc degrees could be considered.

In today’s post we are thrilled to highlight Dr. Afshin Rahimi, PhD, PEng, SMIEEE, a FEAS graduate alum and Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical, Automotive and Materials Engineering at the University of Windsor. Afshin shares insightful advice for our graduate students and postdocs to help them succeed in their careers. 👉 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤 Afshin affirms that developing a quality faculty position application package takes time and effort. Students and postdocs should not hesitate to ask for help reviewing their application. He suggests using the feedback from each of their applications to improve their writing skills. Armed with excellent writing and research skills, Afshin won numerous scholarships and awards during his time at Toronto Metropolitan University including the Vanier CGS fellowship and the C. Ravi Ravindran Outstanding Doctoral Thesis Award for his research on fault diagnosis and prognosis for aerospace systems. He is incredibly grateful to his mentors Drs. One of his most impactful roles was working with students to enhance their writing skills as a writing consultant for Student Life and Learning Support. He encourages students to collaborate with peers and present research at conferences and actively engage in interdisciplinary events, workshops, and seminars within and beyond your institution. Joining professional societies related to their engineering subfield can also offer opportunities to develop relationships with potential collaborators and open doors to collaborative research projects. Afshin worked in industry briefly before transitioning into an academic position and acknowledges that having a knowledge of both sectors is highly advantageous. Afshin’s contributions transcend his research, impacting the lives of his peers, students and community through his outreach, leadership, and mentorship. How did I start doing research when I had no clue about the process? In my 2nd year of undergraduate at IIT Madras, I realised that seniors who have publications are getting admits into top universities. Seeing this, I also wanted publications and wanted to do research. The problem was: I had no clue how to start. I had taken a course on Fluid Mechanics, and was enjoying that course. One afternoon, I went to the office of the professor teaching that course. I had no idea how he would react. What would he think? I had never done research before. “Sir, my name is Raj and I really enjoy your Fluid Mech course. I want to start a research project in this field. I am a complete beginner” “Here’s a list of 10 topics my lab is working on. You can choose one. I will assign a PhD candidate to work with you. You can get started this week if you want” I did not expect such a positive response at all. I was very happy after leaving the professor’s office that day. That was the beginning of my research journey. I started going to the Fluid Mech lab every day. I learnt everything from the PhD candidates in the lab. I learnt about setting up experiments, analysing results and developing theories. I experienced the tremendous hardships you face when doing a serious research project. I remember using a fluorescent laser sheet and passing it through water late at night. When I saw the particles in that laser sheet, I felt the real joy of doing science. After 2 years, I published a first author paper in the Journal of Fluid Mechanics with the professor. In my undergraduate, I learnt all the tools you need for completing a successful PhD.  The grad school admissions committee saw this when I applied for Masters and PhD. I got admitted into MIT, Stanford, Purdue, UIUC and CMU. It all started with a cold visit to the professor’s office. If I had not knocked on that door, it would have never opened. Learnings from this experience: (1) Professors are usually very encouraging and supportive to see beginners start their research journey. (2) Don’t be scared of approaching professors. If you don’t knock on closed doors, they will always remain closed. (3) When you start your research journey, be serious about it. Doing research is not like doing an internship. 1-2 months are not enough. You need to allocate at least 1 year to do serious, impactful research. I would say the same being in Medicine. I had literally no idea what biomedical/ clinical research entails, but I took the bold step of approaching a senior I knew, during my PREMEDICAL (NEET UG entrance preparation) times; and he was so welcoming. I owe all my research journey to that shot I took and that senior and his support. Trust me folks, mentors (look for good ones; but no this isn’t about having “connections”) are more than willing to guide beginners; enthusiasm on our (students’) end is the key! After all, what I even suggest my juniors - Doing courses and all if fine; but the real way to learn research is to “get your feet wet” - actually get into a research project, and then learn along the process! (And please, don’t do it just “for the sake of CV”, research is really beautiful 🥰)

Want to get middle-school kids excited about science? Let them do their own experiments on MIT.nano’s state-of-the-art microscopes! That was the brainchild of Carl Thrasher and Tao Cai, Massachusetts Institute of Technology graduate students who spearheaded the Electron Microscopy Elevating Representation and Growth in Education (EMERGE) program. EMERGE invited 18 eighth-grade students to the pilot event at MIT.nano—a two-hour workshop during which each student explored mystery samples of everyday materials using one of two scanning electron microscopes, which scan material samples using a beam of electrons to form an image. The students were part of a multi-year science and engineering exploration program called MITES Saturdays, run by MIT Introduction to Technology, Engineering, and Science (previously OEOP). With the success of the pilot, the EMERGE team is looking to offer more programs to the MITES students in the spring. Anna Osherov, associate director for Characterization.nano, is excited to give students more access to the cumulative staff knowledge and cutting-edge equipment at MIT.nano. “Our mission is to support mature researchers — and to help inspire the future PhDs and professors who will come to MIT to learn, research, and innovate,” Osherov says. “Designing and offering such programs, aimed at fostering natural curiosity and creativity of young minds, has a tremendous long-term benefit to our society. "My advice to current students and postdocs is to recognize the importance of social and creative skills alongside technical expertise. For better or worse, science is done by people, and there will always be complexity to navigate because of that. More than providing engineering knowledge, classes serve as platforms for developing critical thinking, time management, and a collaborative network. Cultivate personal connections within the department, leveraging the wealth of kindness and talent present. It can be so easy to get lost in the depths of doing complex math for an upcoming problem set deadline, but pursuing hobbies, social skills, and creative interests outside of engineering is invaluable. I highly recommend getting involved in classes and organizations in fields that are not ChemE, not STEM, and are purely “for fun” – creative writing, pottery, PE, film studies, public speaking, languages/cultures, philosophy, etc. College campuses have so many unique resources, and I would encourage everyone to reflect on the specific skills that they hope to develop during their years at Stanford.” - Archana Verma, B.S.
