For a World Where Refugees Are Welcomed June 20th - World Refugee Day In an era marked by unprecedented global displacement, it is crucial to honor refugees and displaced populations. These individuals, forced to flee their homes due to conflict, persecution, or natural disasters, embody resilience and courage. Acknowledging their plight and contributions is not only a moral obligation but also enriches our societies in profound ways. Humanizing the Crisis. The statistics are staggering. According to the UNHCR, over 82 million people worldwide are currently displaced. Behind these numbers are real people—families torn apart, children growing up in uncertainty, and individuals striving to rebuild their lives against all odds. Honoring them means recognizing their humanity and the injustices they have faced. Fostering Inclusivity and Diversity Refugees bring with them a wealth of experiences, skills, and perspectives that can greatly benefit host communities. By integrating refugees, we foster diversity and inclusivity, which are catalysts for innovation and cultural enrichment. Their stories of survival and perseverance can inspire and teach us valuable lessons about resilience and compassion. Upholding Human Rights Honoring refugees is fundamentally about upholding human rights. Every person, regardless of their status, deserves dignity, safety, and the opportunity to thrive. International laws, such as the 1951 Refugee Convention, emphasize the protection of these rights. Our commitment to these principles is tested by how we treat the most vulnerable among us. Honoring refugees and displaced populations is a testament to our shared humanity and moral responsibility. It is about more than just offering a place of refuge; it is about recognizing their potential, supporting their journey, and celebrating the diversity they bring to our world. The 2024 Consultations on Resettlement and Complementary Pathways (CRCP) in Geneva are coming to a close with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi giving remarks. It was my first time attending the CRCP, and it's been a fascinating four days with sessions on diverse topics like the protection of LGBTQI refugees, climate change triggering even more displacement, provision of accommodation and combating negative narratives around refugees. Apparently, 350 people participated from 40+ countries, but I could not help but notice the imbalance in representation. Where are the other 150 countries? Some are not signatories to the Refugee Convention, but it does not mean there aren't allies in every country. It is important to identify and network with allies not only in our respective countries but also in those not represented here. On World Refugee Day (June 20) , new refugee stats will be released and a new campaign for higher education institutions will be launched. We need more hands on deck.

Refugee (noun): Refugees are people who have been forced to flee their home countries due to war, persecution or natural disaster. For the hundreds of refugees we serve each year, it often looked like running from violence with nothing more than the clothes on their back, leaving behind everything and everyone they knew and loved. While millions of refugees have been displaced by unrest from around the globe, today the vast majority of resettled hail from just three countries: 1️⃣Afghanistan 2️⃣Syria 3️⃣Ukraine After government-sponsored resettlement services end (sometimes after only 90 days), the real challenges of building a new life often begin. Friends of Refugees’ “wrap-around” approach embraces each refugee family on the path to long-term success as American citizens. Even better – more than half our staff comes from refugee and immigrant backgrounds, so we understand the refugee’s unique challenges and how to overcome them. The concept of 'transient refugees' is an emerging trend in the Horn of Africa and Africa's Great Lakes region. Transient refugees are people forced to move from their country of origin to temporarily seek refuge in another country regularly. In their Horn of Africa Bulletin Article, Clare Nakazibwe and Acidri Malunga Emmanuel discuss the factors that have led to the emergence of the transient refugee trend, the challenges it poses to national refugee policies, and the role of local leaders in mitigating these challenges. "Every #refugee is a #symptom of our collective failure to ensure #peace and #security." During the past 10 years the number of refugees has more than doubled from 16.7 million refugees in 2013 to 36.4 million by mid-2023. 📈 More than 114 million people worldwide have been forced to flee their homes by the end of September 2023. 💥 We must all #acttogether to address the root causes of displacement! 🙌 The #GlobalRefugeeForum is an incredible example of how individuals and entities, in both the public and private sectors, come together and support the practical implementation of the objectives set out in the #GlobalCompact on #Refugees. 🤝 The main objectives being those of: - Easing pressures on host countries - enhancing refugee self-reliance - increasing access to third-country solutions - improving conditions in countries of origin. 

What does #home mean to you? This World Refugee Day, we asked friends, colleagues, refugees and displaced people from around the world this question and received some powerful answers. Ones that resonated most were the importance of home in preserving memories, feeling safe and being close to loved ones. It’s an important reminder that the concept of ‘home’ looks very different around the world and changes are often not made by choice.
