This week we wanted to highlight the challenges faced by children and young people who use English as an additional language (EAL). They are a diverse group but hopefully this will give you an idea of the kind of issues they face. - EAL pupils can experience isolation within the school community due to language barriers and cultural differences. - Their new school will have unfamiliar behaviours and routines which they don’t have the language skills to comprehend. - They have to adapt to a completely different education system, and unfamiliar curriculum. - Schools often don’t have the budget and resources to provide the amount of additional support EAL pupils need to be able to fully participate at school. - EAL pupils can face assumptions that they aren’t intelligent and curious because they can’t understand or communicate in English. - Linguistic difficulties can mask additional learning needs, for example dyslexia. These are just some of the challenges faced by EAL pupils and the reason why regular support and friendship from our volunteers makes a huge difference to these wonderful children and young people. #education #schools #EAL
