Effect of Abelmoschus esculentus L. (Okra) on Dyslipidemia: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Clinical Studies

The global prevalence of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), including dyslipidemia and atherosclerosis, is rising. While pharmacological treatments for dyslipidemia and associated CVDs exist, not all individuals can afford them, and those who do often experience adverse side effects. Preclinical studies have indicated the potential benefits of Abelmoschus esculentus and its active phytochemicals in addressing dyslipidemia in rodent models of diabetes. However, there is limited clinical evidence on lipid parameters. Thus, this study aimed to assess the potential impact of Abelmoschus esculentus on dyslipidemia. A literature search was performed on PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane Library for relevant trials published from inception until 11 August 2024. Data analysis was performed using Jamovi software version 2.4.8 and Review Manager (version 5.4), with effect estimates reported as standardized mean differences (SMDs) and 95% confidence intervals (CI). The evidence from eight studies with nine treatment arms showed that Abelmoschus esculentus reduces total cholesterol (TC), SMD = −0.53 (95% CI: 1.00 to −0.07), p = 0.025), compared to placebo. Additionally, triglyceride (TG) was reduced in Abelmoschus esculentus compared to placebo, SMD = 0.24 (95% CI: 0.46 to 0.02), p = 0.035. Furthermore, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) was also reduced, SMD = 0.35 (95% CI: 0.59 to 0.11), p = 0.004 in Abelmoschus esculentus versus placebo. This remedy substantially increased high-density lipoprotein (HDL), SMD = 0.34 (95% CI: 0.07 to 0.61), p = 0.014). Abelmoschus esculentus substantially improved lipid profile in prediabetes, T2D, obesity, and diabetic nephropathy. While the evidence confirms the potential benefits of Abelmoschus esculentus in reducing dyslipidemia, it is important for future clinical studies to standardize the effective dosage for more reliable results. Therefore, future trials should focus on these markers in well-designed trials with sufficient sample sizes. Furthermore, Abelmoschus esculentus can be supplemented to the diet of the relevant populations to alleviate dyslipidemia. Full article

Metabolic-Associated Fatty Liver Disease (MAFLD) is a clinical–pathological scenario that occurs due to the accumulation of triglycerides in hepatocytes which is considered a significant cause of liver conditions and contributes to an increased risk of death worldwide. Even though the possible causes of MAFLD can involve the interaction of genetics, hormones, and nutrition, lifestyle (diet and sedentary lifestyle) is the most influential factor in developing this condition. Polyphenols comprise many natural chemical compounds that can be helpful in managing metabolic diseases. Therefore, the aim of this review was to investigate the impact of oxidative stress, inflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction, and the role of polyphenols in managing MAFLD. Some polyphenols can reverse part of the liver damage related to inflammation, oxidative stress, or mitochondrial dysfunction, and among them are anthocyanin, baicalin, catechin, curcumin, chlorogenic acid, didymin, epigallocatechin-3-gallate, luteolin, mangiferin, puerarin, punicalagin, resveratrol, and silymarin. These compounds have actions in reducing plasma liver enzymes, body mass index, waist circumference, adipose visceral indices, lipids, glycated hemoglobin, insulin resistance, and the HOMA index. They also reduce nuclear factor-KB (NF-KB), interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), blood pressure, liver fat content, steatosis index, and fibrosis. On the other hand, they can improve HDL-c, adiponectin levels, and fibrogenesis markers. These results show that polyphenols are promising in the prevention and treatment of MAFLD. Full article

Lipid Accumulation Product Is Predictive of Cardiovascular Hospitalizations among Patients with Stable Ischemic Heart Disease: Long-Term Follow-Up of the LAERTES Study

(1) Background: Lipid accumulation product (LAP) is an anthropometric index of abdominal adiposity that has been associated with increased cardiovascular risk. We aimed to explore the association of LAP with cardiovascular hospitalizations and compare its predictive accuracy with other indices such as body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference. (2) Methods: LAERTES was a prospective, population-based cohort that recruited consecutive patients with stable ischemic heart disease (SIHD) from two Greek hospitals in Athens. Data from 770 participants (13% women, median age 62 years) with a median follow-up of 4.3 years were analyzed in relation to the occurrence of adverse cardiovascular events mandating hospital admission (non-fatal myocardial infarction [MI], non-fatal ischemic stroke and malignant ventricular arrhythmias). (3) Results: A total of 127 (16.5%) of the participants were admitted to cardiology clinics over the follow-up period; 12.4% of them developed MI, 2.6% ventricular arrhythmia and 1.5% ischemic stroke. Patients with cardiovascular hospitalization had higher BMI, larger waist circumference, higher LAP and triglycerides and lower HDL-cholesterol than patients without hospitalization. Upper LAP quartile and hypertension were independent predictors for cardiovascular hospitalization (HR: 2.20, 95% CI: 1.12–4.34, p = 0.02 and HR: 1.57, 95% CI: 1.03–2.39, p = 0.03, respectively). (4) Conclusions: Higher LAP quartiles are predictive of adverse cardiovascular events leading to hospital admission and deserve further evaluation in dedicated studies. Full article

Paraoxonase 1 (PON1) and Paraoxonase 3 (PON3) are enzymes located on the surface of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and share similar antioxidant properties, possibly modulated by other proteins such as Myeloperoxidase (MPO), which drives the shift from functional to dysfunctional HDL. PON1 has been extensively studied in relation to Alzheimer’s Disease (AD), but the role of PON3 remains unknown. To fill this knowledge gap, the study analyzed PON3 protein levels and PON1-arylesterase activity in 99 AD patients, 100 patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and 79 cognitively normal controls. The results showed that serum PON3 levels remained unchanged across all groups. In contrast, serum arylesterase activity was significantly reduced in both AD and MCI patients compared to controls (p < 0.001 for both comparisons). Surprisingly, there was no correlation between arylesterase activity and MPO protein concentration or activity. However, PON3 was found to have a significant positive correlation with both MPO concentration (r = 0.507, p < 0.0001) and MPO activity (r = 0.264, p < 0.01). In conclusion, we demonstrated for the first time that PON1 and PON3 have distinct relationships with AD, with only PON1 showing a decrease in activity in this disease, while PON3 levels remained unchanged. Another noteworthy finding was the selective correlation between PON3 and MPO, which may suggest a preferential physical association of PON3 with dysfunctional HDL. Full article

Fat-binding nutraceutical supplements have gained considerable attention as potential cholesterol-lowering strategies to address dyslipidemia in overweight and obese individuals. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a polysaccharide-rich compound containing β-glucan/chitin–chitosan (βGluCnCs) on lipid profiles and lipoprotein function. In a prospective, two-arm clinical trial, 58 overweight and obese individuals were randomized to receive either 3 g/day of βGluCnCs or a placebo (microcrystalline cellulose) for 12 weeks. Serum lipids and lipoprotein functions were assessed at baseline and at 4-week intervals throughout the study. The administration of βGluCnCs led to a significant increase in HDL cholesterol (HDLc) levels and improved HDLc/non-HDLc and HDLc/total cholesterol (TC) ratios, while reducing apolipoprotein B (ApoB) levels (p < 0.05). However, the intervention did not affect HDL particle diameter, particle number, or lipoprotein functionality. Women demonstrated greater sensitivity to changes in HDLc during βGluCnCs supplementation, whereas men exhibited a significant reduction in ApoB levels. When stratified by baseline LDL cholesterol (LDLc) levels (cut-off: 130 mg/dL), the increase in HDLc and the ApoA1/ApoB ratio was found in the low-LDL group. In contrast, the high-LDL group experienced a significant reduction in atherogenic non-LDLc and LDLc, along with an improvement in HDL’s antioxidant capacity after βGluCnCs intervention. These changes were not statistically significant in the placebo group. In conclusion, our study demonstrated that daily supplementation with βGluCnCs significantly improved lipid profiles, with effects that varied based on sex and baseline LDLc levels. Full article

Background: Transgender men use exogenous androgen for male pattern virilization. Hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy (HBSO) is performed to stop the endogenous estrogen secretion. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk has been shown to increase with long-term use of androgens and the removal of estrogen. We aimed to investigate the CVD risk in these individuals by measuring internal and common carotid artery intima–media thicknesses (CIMT). Methods: In this cohort study, data were collected from transgender men who had undergone HBSO and used androgens for at least two years (median treatment duration was 5 years in our research). Cisgender women in the same age range were selected as the control group. Demographics, vital signs, and hematological values of transgender patients and cisgender women subjects in the control group were noted. CVD markers were compared with sonographically measured CIMT values. Results: The mean age and body mass index (BMI) of the study group were 32.6 and 25.3, respectively. Weight, systolic–diastolic blood pressure, hemoglobin, hematocrit, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), serum triglyceride (TG), HbA1c levels, internal CIMT, and common CIMT values of the study group were higher, while the high-density lipoprotein (HDL) level was significantly lower compared the control group (p1 = 0.025, p2 = 0.010, p3 = 0.002, p4 = 0.001, p5 = 0.001, p6 = 0.012, p7 = 0.008, p8 = 0.007, p9 = 0.013, and p10 = 0.001). There was also an increase in the body weight, BMI, LDL, and TG levels of the study group after the testosterone treatment (p1 = 0.025, p2 = 0.019, p3 = 0.001, p4 = 0.001, and p5 = 0.001). Conclusions: We demonstrated that the use of testosterone therapy in transgender men is associated with higher CIMT values. While further investigation is needed to assess morbidity and mortality rates, we recommend that regular clinical and radiological examinations be performed in these individuals to accurately evaluate the risk of CVD. Background/Objectives: Dyslipidemia is frequently linked to various disorders, and its clinical relevance is now recognized. The role of inflammation and oxidative stress (OS) in dyslipidemia has been acknowledged. This study assessed the potential of arbutin (ARB) to prevent dyslipidemia and its associated OS and inflammation in rats with acute hyperlipidemia. Methods: Rats received ARB orally for 14 days and a single intraperitoneal injection of poloxamer-407 on day 15. Results: Poloxamer-407 elevated circulating cholesterol (CHOL), triglycerides (TG), very low-density lipoprotein (vLDL), and LDL, and reduced high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-C and lipoprotein lipase (LPL). ARB ameliorated the circulating lipids and LPL, and suppressed 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl CoA reductase (HMGCR) in rat liver and in vitro. Fatty acid synthase (FAS) in rat liver and its in vitro activity were suppressed by ARB, which also upregulated the LDL receptor (LDL-R) and ABCA1, and had no effect on ABCG5 and ABCG8 mRNA. ARB ameliorated liver malondialdehyde and nitric oxide and enhanced antioxidants in rats with dyslipidemia. Liver NF-κB p65 and blood inflammatory cytokines were increased in dyslipidemic rats, effects that were reversed by ARB. Moreover, ARB effectively suppressed lymphocyte E-NTPDase and E-ADA activities in dyslipidemic rats. The biochemical findings were supported by in silico data showing the affinity of ARB to bind LDL-R PCSK9 binding domain, HMGCR, FAS, and E-NTPDase. Conclusions: ARB possessed anti-dyslipidemia, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant effects mediated via the modulation of CHOL and TG synthesis, LPL, lymphocyte E-NTPDase and E-ADA, and cytokine release in rats. Thus, ARB could be an effective agent to attenuate dyslipidemia and its associated OS and inflammation, pending further studies as well as clinical trials. Full article

The Influence of Remnant Cholesterol on Cardiovascular Risk and Mortality in Patients with Non-Functional Adrenal Incidentalomas and Mild Autonomous Cortisol Secretion: A Retrospective Cohort Study

Background: Increased cardiovascular risk has been described in individuals with adrenal incidentalomas. The aim of the present study is to assess the effect of remnant cholesterol (RC) on the cardiovascular risk and mortality of patients with adrenal incidentalomas. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted with patients with adrenal incidentalomas between 2001 and 2024. One hundred thirty-seven patients (mean age of 61.2 ± 11.5 years; 56.6% women) with non-functioning adrenal incidentalomas and with mild autonomous cortisol secretion (MACS) (cortisol post-dexamethasone suppression test ≥1.8 µg/mL) were included. The patients were divided into two groups using 30 mg/dL as the cut-off for RC. Logistic regression models were used to study the impact of RC on major adverse cardiovascular events and mortality (MACEs). Results: Patients with RC ≥ 30 mg/dL exhibited a higher prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) (p < 0.001), lower HDL-C (p < 0.001) and LDL-C (p = 0.025) levels, a higher frequency of treatment with statins (p = 0.032), and a higher rate of non-fatal major cardiovascular events (p = 0.038) and MACEs (p = 0.038). Patients with MACS showed no differences in RC or complications during the follow-up. The relative risk of high RC was 2.65 (1.04–6.77) for cardiovascular events and 2.27 (1.05–4.92) for MACEs, with p < 0.05 in both cases. The only variables independently affecting MACEs were age ([odds ratio] OR = 1.13 [p = 0.004]), female sex (OR = 0.20; p = 0.016), LDL-C (OR = 1.02; p = 0.029), and RC (OR = 1.06; p = 0.014). T2D and HDL-C were not independently associated with MACEs. Conclusions: RC ≥30 mg/dL in patients with adrenal incidentalomas was associated with a higher prevalence of T2D, lower HDL-C levels, and a higher risk of MACEs. MACS was not associated with RC or MACEs during the follow-up. Full article

Evaluation of Inflammatory Markers in Predicting Coronary Complexity: Insights from the SYNTAX II Score in NSTEMI Patients

Objectives: Non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) is characterized by the absence of pathological ST segment elevation but an increase in biological markers. The SYNTAX II score (SS-II) is calculated to evaluate the complexity of coronary artery disease and to guide treatment decisions between percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). The aim of this study is to evaluate the relationship of socio-demographic data and biochemical markers with SS-II in NSTEMI patients. Materials and Methods: Six hundred patients who were admitted to the private Aktif International Hospital cardiology clinic between January 2020 and January 2024 and were diagnosed with NSTEMI were included in the study. Severity, extent, and clinical evaluation of atherosclerosis were determined using risk factors, laboratory tests, and coronary angiography. Patients were divided into two groups according to their SS-II score: low (≤ 22) and high SS-II (> 32). Socio-demographic data, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR), and monocyte-to-HDL-C ratio (MHR) were compared between the two groups. Results: Group 1 (SS-II ≤ 22) included 380 patients, and group 2 (SS-II > 32) included 220 patients. There was a statistically significant difference in HDL, creatine value, white blood cell, troponin I, hs-TnT, and monocyte values in group 2 compared with group 1 (p = 0.001, p = 0.018, p = 0.031, and p = 0.001, respectively). NLR, MLR, MHR, and SS values were statistically significantly higher in group 2 compared with group 1 (p = 0.015, p = 0.002, p = 0.001, and p = 0.001, respectively). The risk factors were found to be significantly associated with high-risk NSTEMI (SS-II > 32) in a logistic regression analysis and included peripheral artery disease (PAD) (OR: 3.028, p = 0.040), troponin I (OR: 3.575, p = 0.015), hs-TnT (OR: 4.221, p = 0.010), NLR (OR: 1.528, p = 0.024). MLR (OR: 5.248, p = 0.012), and MHR (OR: 7.122, p = 0.010). ROC analysis revealed that NLR (AUC: 0.691, p = 0.016), MLR (AUC: 0.731, p = 0.004), and MHR (AUC: 0.824, p = 0.003) had higher predictive power than other parameters in patients with high-risk NSTEMI (SS-II > 32). Conclusions: We found that NLR, MLR, and MHR levels are associated with the severity of coronary artery disease. We think that adding these easily and quickly measurable parameters to routine laboratory results may support the clinician in evaluating the complexity of coronary artery disease and guiding treatment decisions in NSTEMI patients. This research characterized and explored the effect of cumin essential oil nanoemulsion (CEONE) on broiler growth performance, serum biochemistry, hematological parameters, and cecal microbial count. Day-old (n = 96) broilers (Ross 308) were randomly assigned to six treatments with five replicates of three broilers each. The dietary treatments consisted of negative control (only basal diet), positive control (basal diet + 200 µL of enrofloxacin), 25 µL (basal diet + 25 µL of CEONE), 50 µL (basal diet + 50 µL of CEONE), 75 µL (basal diet + 75 µL of CEONE), and 100 µL (basal diet + 100 µL of CEONE). The broiler’s body weight gain (BWG) after 42 days of treatment exhibited increased weight in the CEONE group (976.47 ± 11.82–1116.22 ± 29.04). The gain in weight was further evidenced by the beneficial microbe load (107 log) compared to the pathogenic strain. All the biochemical parameters were observed in the normal range, except for a higher level of HDL and a lower LDL value. This safety has been validated by pKCSM toxicity analysis showing a safe and highly tolerable dose of cuminaldehyde. In conclusion, this research observed the potential of CEONE as a multifunctional agent. It is a valuable candidate for further application in combating bacterial infections and enhancing animal health and growth. Full article

Canola Oil Ameliorates Obesity by Suppressing Lipogenesis and Reprogramming the Gut Microbiota in Mice via the AMPK Pathway

Background: obesity is a worldwide problem that seriously endangers human health. Canola oil (Col) has been reported to regulate hepatic steatosis by influencing oxidative stress and lipid metabolism in Kunming mice. However, whether Col exhibits an anti-obesity effect by altering the gut microbiota remains unknown. Methods: in this study, we observed that a high-fat diet increased lipogenesis and gut microbiota disorder in C57BL/6J male mice, while the administration of Col suppressed lipogenesis and improved gut microbiota disorder. Results: the results show that Col markedly reduced the final body weight and subcutaneous adipose tissue of C57BL/6J male mice fed a high-fat diet (HFD) after 6 weeks of administration. However, although Col did not effectively increase the serum concentration of HDL, we found that treatment with Col notably inhibited the low-density lipoprotein (LDL), total cholesterol (TC), and triglycerides (TGs) in HFD mice. Furthermore, Col ameliorated obesity in the liver compared to mice that were only fed a high-fat diet. We also found that Col significantly inhibited the relative expression of sterol regulatory element binding protein (SREBP1/2), peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ), and insulin-induced genes (Insig1/2) that proved to be closely associated with lipogenesis in HFD mice. In addition, the concentration of acetic acid was significantly increased in Col-treatment HFD mice. Further, we noted that Col contributed to the reprogramming of the intestinal microbiota. The relative abundances of Akkermansia, Dubosiella, and Alistipes were enhanced under treatment with Col in HFD mice. The results also imply that Col markedly elevated the phosphorylation level of the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) pathway in HFD mice. Conclusions: the results of our study show that Col ameliorates obesity and suppresses lipogenesis in HFD mice. The underlying mechanisms are possibly associated with the reprogramming of the gut microbiota, in particular, the acetic acid-mediated increased expression of Alistipes via the AMPK signaling pathway. Impact of High-Dose Supplemental Paprika Extract Feeding on Egg Storage and Biochemical Parameters in Laying Hens

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of paprika extract supplementation on egg storage and blood biochemical parameters in 63-week-old Rhode Island Red (RIR) and Silky Fowl (SF) hens. The hens were divided into three groups: a control group with a basal diet and two groups receiving the basal diet with paprika extract. The trial lasted 28 days, with egg quality (yolk color and albumen pH) assessed after storing eggs at 25 °C for 21 days. A total of 144 eggs were used in 42 treatments (two breeds, three diets, and seven storage periods) with three eggs examined each (four eggs were used on day 0 and five eggs on day 21). Additionally, the yolk carotenoid content, yolk color, and pH of eggs stored at 4 °C and 25 °C were compared. Results showed that yolk color fan score (YCFS) decreased with storage, and SF had a higher albumen pH than RIR, with both breeds exhibiting an increase in pH over time. HDL cholesterol (HDL-C) levels and the HDL-C to total cholesterol ratio were significantly influenced by breed, diet, and their interaction. The HDL-C level in SF was affected linearly and quadratically by diet, while no such trend was observed in RIR. The study concluded that paprika extract affects egg quality and blood lipid profiles differently in different breeds, highlighting breed-specific responses to dietary supplementation. Full article

Cardiovascular Risk Factors as Independent Predictors of Diabetic Retinopathy in Type II Diabetes Mellitus: The Development of a Predictive Model

Background: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a leading cause of blindness in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Cardiovascular risk factors, such as hypertension, obesity, and dyslipidemia, may play a crucial role in the development and progression of DR, though the evidence remains mixed. This study aimed to assess cardiovascular risk factors as independent predictors of DR and to develop a predictive model for DR progression in T2DM patients. Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted on 377 patients with T2DM who underwent a comprehensive eye exam. Clinical data, including blood pressure, lipid profile, BMI, and smoking status, were collected. DR staging was determined through fundus photography and classified as No DR, Non-Proliferative DR (NPDR), and Mild, Moderate, Severe, or Proliferative DR (PDR). A Multivariate Logistic Regression was used to evaluate the association between cardiovascular risk factors and DR presence. Several machine learning models, including Random Forest, XGBoost, and Support Vector Machines, were applied to assess the predictive value of cardiovascular risk factors and identify key predictors. Model performance was evaluated using accuracy, precision, recall, and ROC-AUC. Results: The prevalence of DR in the cohort was 41.6%, with 34.5% having NPDR and 7.1% having PDR. A multivariate analysis identified systolic blood pressure (SBP), LDL cholesterol, and body mass index (BMI) as independent predictors of DR progression (p < 0.05). The Random Forest model showed a moderate predictive ability, with an AUC of 0.62 for distinguishing between the presence and absence of DR XGBoost showing a better performance, featuring a ROC-AUC of 0.68, while SBP, HDL cholesterol, and BMI were consistently identified as the most important predictors across models. After tuning, the XGBoost model showed a notable improvement, with an ROC-AUC of 0.72. Conclusions: Cardiovascular risk factors, particularly BP and BMI, play a significant role in the progression of DR in patients with T2DM. The predictive models, especially XGBoost, showed moderate accuracy in identifying DR stages, suggesting that integrating these risk factors into clinical practice may improve early detection and intervention strategies for DR. Combined Effects of Environmental Metals and Physiological Stress on Lipid Dysregulation

Background: Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are a leading cause of mortality worldwide, influenced by genetic, environmental, and behavioral factors. This study examines the relationship between heavy metal exposure, chronic physiological stress (allostatic load), and lipid profiles, which are markers of CVD risk, using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2017–2018. Methods: We utilized structural equation modeling (SEM) to explore the associations between blood levels of lead, cadmium, allostatic load (AL), and lipid measures (low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), and triglycerides). The AL index was derived from cardiovascular, inflammatory, and metabolic biomarkers and categorized into quartiles to identify high-risk individuals, with an index out of 10 subsequently developed. Results: The SEM analysis revealed that both heavy metal exposure and allostatic load are significantly associated with lipid profiles. Higher levels of lead and cadmium were associated with increased LDL and triglycerides, while higher AL scores were linked to increased LDL and triglycerides and decreased HDL levels. Age was also a significant factor, showing positive correlations with LDL and triglycerides, and a negative correlation with HDL. Conclusions: This study underscores the multifactorial nature of CVD, highlighting the combined impact of environmental pollutants and physiological stress on lipid dysregulation. These findings suggest the need for integrated public health strategies that address both environmental exposures and chronic stress to mitigate cardiovascular risk. Further research is warranted to explore the underlying mechanisms and develop targeted interventions. Full article

High-density lipoprotein (HDL) has been proposed to provide cardio-protective properties through the functionality of its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant enzymatic machinery. Within this article, the beneficial effects of several functional foods on HDL levels and functionality for cardio-protection are thoroughly reviewed. Emphasis is given to functional foods and their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory health-promoting effects for the cardiovascular system through their benefits on HDL, which act either solely or synergistically as an adjuvant approach with well-established anti-atherogenic therapies. Promising outcomes from both in vitro and in vivo studies in animal models and clinical trials, which outline the beneficial effects of such functional foods on HDL levels and functionality, are thoroughly discussed. The mechanisms of the obtained antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antithrombotic, and cardio-protective effects on HDL activities of functional foods containing natural bioactives are also outlined. Limitations and future perspectives on the overall benefits that these natural bioactive compounds exert as important ingredients in functional foods to induce HDL-related benefits and to strengthen cardiovascular health are also discussed.
