Cat-scratch disease (CSD) is an infectious disease caused by Bartonella henselae, presenting with fever and lymphadenopathy following contact with felines. The ocular manifestations include neuroretinitis, characterised by optic nerve swelling and a macular star. Case Presentation: We discuss a case of neuroretinitis that presented atypically, without a macular star. There was an initial suspicion of Bartonella, but the serology was negative. Our patient was eventually empirically treated for infective neuroretinitis based on a positive contact history (recently scratched by one of his three pet cats). There was progression to a macular star upon serial dilated fundus examination, and the repeated serology one week after symptom onset showed rising titres, supporting a diagnosis of CSD. Conclusions: A judicious review of systems, repeat assays, serial dilated fundus examination, and early ophthalmic evaluation are useful in cases of suspected neuroretinitis, remaining an important differential in the evaluation of sudden-onset painless vision loss and unilateral disc swelling. This article comprehensively examines Donald Trump’s political leadership, arguing that his tenure as the 45th President of the United States exhibited characteristics commonly associated with authoritarian mob bosses. Drawing upon various empirical evidence and theoretical political science frameworks, the study sheds light on the underlying dynamics that shaped Trump’s leadership style and its implications for democratic governance. The analysis begins by contextualizing Trump’s rise to power within the erosion of democratic norms. It explores how his rhetoric, characterized by demagoguery and the demonization of opponents, mirrors the tactics employed by mob bosses to consolidate their power and suppress dissent. Moreover, the study uncovers the striking similarities between Trump’s administration management and the hierarchical structures of organized crime, highlighting his reliance on loyalty, personal connections, and a disregard for institutional checks and balances. Furthermore, this research delves into Trump’s autocratic tendencies, as evidenced by his disdain for the free press, attacks on the judiciary, and attempts to undermine the integrity of democratic processes. It reveals how these actions align with the strategies employed by authoritarian leaders to silence opposition and perpetuate their dominance. By examining Trump’s presidency through process tracing, this study contributes to our understanding of the complex relationship between authoritarianism and the erosion of democratic institutions. The findings underscore the urgent need for continued scholarly and public scrutiny of leaders who exhibit traits akin to authoritarian mob bosses to safeguard the principles of democratic governance and protect the integrity of liberal democracies. The name of Chinggis Khan and the women who contributed to the rise of his empire have long been associated with barbarism in the West. However, the rediscovery of the Secret History of the Mongols, a medieval Mongolian epic chronicle, in 1866, and its numerous translations circulating since the mid-20th century has led Western scholars to a total revaluation of these figures. This paper analyses the representation of Chinggis Khan and his queens in the literary and cinematic adaptations of the Secret History of the Mongols produced in Europe and the United States, specifically in English, French, and Italian. It critically engages with E. W. Said’s works, and with postcolonial and gender studies. The article argues that the portrayal of the Mongols has become increasingly positive in 20th and 21st century remakes of the epic chronicle, highlighting how the West reconsiders its relationship with cultural and gender otherness in an era marked by decolonisation and feminist claims. The fabricated shear wall with a grouting sleeve is used widely in structural engineering. The damage characteristics of a fabricated shear wall reinforced with angle steel of inadequate grouted material strength were investigated using acoustic emission (AE) technology under a horizontal repeated load. The results showed that evaluation of the AE energy and Ib value exposed the crack expansion and damage evolution of the fabricated shear walls; the sudden rise in the energy level predicted the occurrence of micro-cracks in the shear wall. The trends of the AE accumulated energy and accumulated hysteretic energy of the specimens had a good correlation. The AE Ib value results illustrated that the destruction was most serious inside the shear wall with an inadequate grouted material strength at the failure stage. The trends of AE HI and Sr could better characterize the crack propagation of the shear walls. The AE damage model was proposed based on the Park–Ang damage model incorporating fractal energy density, which could effectively evaluate the damage degree of shear walls under repeated loading. Rapid urbanization has resulted in increased environmental challenges, compounding worries about deteriorating air quality and rising temperatures. As cities become hubs of human activity, understanding the complex interplay of numerous environmental elements is critical for developing effective mitigation solutions. Recognizing this urgency, a framework to highlight the hotspots with critical environmental issues emerges as a comprehensive approach that incorporates key criteria such as the surface urban heat island intensity (SUHII), heat index (HI) and air quality index (AQI) to assess and address the complex web of environmental stressors that grip urban landscapes. Employing the multicriteria decision analysis approach, the proposed framework, named the environmental risk hotspot mapping framework (ERHMF), innovatively applies the analytic hierarchy process at a sub-criteria level, considering long-term heat island trends with recent fluctuations in the HI and AQI. Climate change impact has been symbolized through rising temperatures, as reflected by surface urban heat island intensity trends over two decades. The robustness and correctness of the weights have been assessed by computing the consistency ratio, which came out as 0.046, 0.065 and 0.044 for the sub-criteria of the SUHII, AQI and HI, respectively. Furthermore, the framework delves into the nexus between environmental stressors and vegetation cover, elucidating the role of green spaces in mitigating urban environmental risks. Augmented by spatial and demographic data, the ERHMF adeptly discerns high-risk areas where environmental stress converges with urban development, vulnerable population concentrations and critical vegetation status, thereby facilitating targeted risk management interventions. The framework’s effectiveness has been demonstrated in a regional case study in Italy, underscoring its ability to pinpoint risk hotspots and inform specific policy interventions. The quantitative study undertaken at the sub-administrative level revealed that approximately 6,000,000 m2 of land in Bologna are classified as being under high to extremely high environmental stress, with over 4,000,000 m2 lying only within the extremely high stress group (90–100). Similarly, 1,000,000 m2 of land in Piacenza and Modena have high levels of environmental stress (80–90). In conclusion, the ERHMF presents a holistic methodology for delineating high-risk urban hotspots, providing essential insights for policymakers, urban planners and stakeholders, with the potential to enhance overall urban resilience and foster sustainable development efforts. Further reductions of crude protein in broiler diets may cause essential amino acids traditionally considered to be supplied at adequate levels to become limiting. Requirement data for histidine are currently scarce and this amino acid is uniquely able to be stored within the body. Thus, the objectives of this study were to evaluate female Cobb 500 broiler growth performance and carcass characteristic responsiveness to increasing digestible histidine to digestible lysine ratios (dHis:dLys) during a 22- to 42-day feeding period and determine if dHis:dLys in preceding feeds influence the former responses. Starter diets were formulated to contain dHis:dLys of 33% or 38% and grower diets were formulated to contain dHis:dLys of 28%, 33%, 38%, or 43%, which gave rise to a 2 × 4 factorial arrangement of treatments. No interactions (p > 0.05) between the starter or grower diet dHis:dLys occurred. Increasing the dHis:dLys from 22 to 42 days resulted in body weight gain, feed conversion ratio, and total breast meat yield quadratic responses (p ≤ 0.05). Additionally, it appears that dHis:dLys between 33% and 38% fed during the starter phase does not influence broiler responsiveness to different dHis:dLys during the grower phase. Full article

All the n possible returns on a financial asset are the components of an element of a linear space over R. This paper shows how to transfer all these n possible returns on a one-dimensional straight line. In this research work, two or more than two financial assets are studied. More than two financial assets are always studied in pairs, so they are treated inside the budget set of a given decision-maker. Two univariate financial assets give rise to a bivariate financial asset characterized by a bivariate (two-dimensional) distribution of probability. This research work shows how constrained choices being made by a given decision-maker under conditions of uncertainty and riskiness maximize his utility of an ordinal nature. For this reason, prevision bundles are dealt with. Furthermore, every choice identifies a zero-sum game. Since a specific kind of choice associated with two or more than two objects is investigated, new conceptual and mathematical outcomes related to financial decisions are shown. Full article

pH homeostasis is crucial for spermatogenesis, sperm maturation, sperm physiological function, and fertilization in mammals. HCO3 and H+ are the most significant factors involved in regulating pH homeostasis in the male reproductive system. Multiple pH-regulating transporters and ion channels localize in the testis, epididymis, and spermatozoa, such as HCO3 transporters (solute carrier family 4 and solute carrier family 26 transporters), carbonic anhydrases, and H+-transport channels and enzymes (e.g., Na+-H+ exchangers, monocarboxylate transporters, H+-ATPases, and voltage-gated proton channels). Hormone-mediated signals impose an influence on the production of some HCO3 or H+ transporters, such as NBCe1, SLC4A2, MCT4, etc. Additionally, ion channels including sperm-specific cationic channels for Ca2+ (CatSper) and K+ (SLO3) are directly or indirectly regulated by pH, exerting specific actions on spermatozoa. The slightly alkaline testicular pH is conducive to spermatogenesis, whereas the epididymis’s low HCO3 concentration and acidic lumen are favorable for sperm maturation and storage. Spermatozoa pH increases substantially after being fused with seminal fluid to enhance motility. In the female reproductive tract, sperm are subjected to increasing concentrations of HCO3 in the uterine and fallopian tube, causing a rise in the intracellular pH (pHi) of spermatozoa, leading to hyperpolarization of sperm plasma membranes, capacitation, hyperactivation, acrosome reaction, and ultimately fertilization. The physiological regulation initiated by SLC26A3, SLC26A8, NHA1, sNHE, and CFTR localized in sperm is proven for certain to be involved in male fertility. This review intends to present the key factors and characteristics of pHi regulation in the testes, efferent duct, epididymis, seminal fluid, and female reproductive tract, as well as the associated mechanisms during the sperm journey to fertilization, proposing insights into outstanding subjects and future research trends. After the rise of logical positivism, even in the realm of theology, there was a trend to give up on accepting the actions of God in history as objective acts and to create an atmosphere of separating faith and reason. Wolfhart Pannenberg’s work presents a compelling integration of theology with the rational and empirical rigors of the scientific age. Through a comprehensive theological method, he aimed to establish a dialogue between faith and scientific inquiry, challenging the exclusivity of logical positivism by proposing a theological metaphysics grounded in the concept of retroactive ontology. Pannenberg’s approach is distinguished by its systematic application of hermeneutics, considering the totality of history as the context for divine revelation, and positioning the resurrection of Jesus Christ as a pivotal event that embodies God’s influence on the world. His innovative ontology, which enables one to consider divine action as objective, seeks to validate theology as a science, engaging with natural sciences to foster a mutual enrichment between faith and reason. Pannenberg’s methodological rigor and metaphysical framework offer a robust foundation for a theology that is both intellectually defensible and deeply rooted in Christian faith, advocating for a theology of nature that reconciles the divine with the empirical world. This article argues that Pierre Bayle (1647–1706) is not merely a theorist of religious toleration but also a theorist of religious radicalization. By exploring how religious dissenters experienced religious conformity as a kind of mental and spiritual torture akin to conventional forms of corporeal punishment, I demonstrate that Bayle’s influential defense of toleration and liberty of conscience hinges on his account of the psychological mechanism of religious radicalization. Demands for religious conformity do not convince dissenters of their error but of their lack of zeal for their faith. Bayle’s plea for toleration, more broadly, urges us to reflect on the ways that we invite those who are different from us into dialogue or risk alienating them even further, an urgent concern today as extremist religious and nationalist views are on the rise across the globe. The journey of Byzantine scholar Manuel Chrysoloras and his stay in Florence at the turn of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries has been celebrated as an event that decisively shaped the course of European humanism. The later return of Enlightenment humanism to Ottoman lands in the eighteenth to early twentieth centuries can be described as the return of Chrysoloras. This return is generally known in a fragmentary form as a regional phenomenon: the story of Greek, Arab, Turkish and Jewish nationalisms and of the Ottoman reforms. It is also framed historically as the evolution from a traditional and theological society to new forms of epistemic, literary, civic and national communities, while often leaving aside failures and later contradictory transformations. The present essay offers an integrative study of modern humanism in late Ottoman and post-Ottoman contexts. The migration of Enlightenment humanism to the Middle East raised a wide range of expectations, projecting a new national or imperial organization within a harmonious diplomatic relationship with Christian Europe and the Americas. Yet, the more the revivalist and reformist projects evolved, the more they involved ethnic and religious conflicts and colonial intervention. This article illuminates the rise and fall of humanism in Middle Eastern contexts. Full article

To revolutionize the photochemical efficiency of quantum dots sensitized solar cells (QDSSCs) devices, herein, a passivation of the cells with multilayer material has been developed for heterojunctions TiO2/NiS/MnS/HI-30/Pt devices. In this study, NiS and MnS were deposited on a photoanode for the first time as passivated photon absorbers at room temperature. The adoption of NiS as a passisvative layer could tailor the active surface area and improve the photochemical properties of the newly modified cells. The vibrational shifts obtained from the Raman spectra imply that the energy change is influenced by the surface effect, giving rise to better electronic conductivity. The electrochemical stability and durability test for the N/M-3 device slows down and remains at 8.88% of its initial current after 3500 s, as compared to the N/M-1 device at 7.20%. The disparity in charge recombination implies that both the outer and inner parts of the nanoporous material are involved in the photogeneration reaction. The hybridized N/M-3 cell device reveals the highest current density with a low potential onset, indicating that power conversion occurs more easily because photons tend to be adsorbed easily on the surface of the MnS. The Nyquist plot for N/M-1 and N/M-3 promotes the faster transport of electrolytic ions across the TiO2/NiS/MnS, providing a good interaction for the electrolyte. The I-J Value of 9.94% shows that the passivation with the NiS layer promotes electron transport and enhances the performance of the modified cells. The passivation of the TiO2 layer with NiS attains a better power conversion efficiency among the scant studies so far on the surface passivation of QDSCs. Full article

In this paper, Cu thin films were deposited on Si (100) substrates by the high−power impulse magnetron sputtering (HiIPMS) technique, and the effects of different duty cycles (from 2.25% to 5.25%) on the plasma discharge characteristics, microstructure, and electrical properties of Cu thin films were investigated. The results of the target current test show that the peak target current remains stable under 2.25% and 3% duty cycle conditions. Under the conditions of a 4.5% and 5.25% duty cycle, the target peak current shows a decreasing trend. The average power of the target shows a rising trend with the increase in the duty cycle, while the peak power of the target shows a decreasing trend with the increase in the duty cycle. The results of OES show that with the increase in the duty cycle, the total peak intensity of copper and argon emissions shows an overall increasing trend. The duty cycle from 3% to 4.5% change in copper and argon emission peak total intensity change is not obvious. The deposition rate and surface morphology of the copper film were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, and the deposition rate of the copper film increased with the increase in the duty cycle, which was mainly due to the increase in the average power. The surface roughness of the copper film was evaluated by atomic force microscopy. X−ray diffraction (XRD) was used to analyze the grain size and texture of the Cu film, and the results showed that the average grain size of the Cu film increased from 38 nm to 59 nm on the (111) and (200) crystal planes. Four−probe square resistance test copper film resistivity in 2.25%, 3% low duty cycle conditions of the copper film resistivity is generally higher than 4.5%, 5.25% high duty cycle conditions, the copper film resistivity shows the trend of change is mainly affected by the copper film grain size and the (111) face of the double effect of the optimal orientation. The lowest resistivity of the copper film measured under the 4.5% duty cycle condition is 1.7005 μΩ·cm, which is close to the intrinsic resistivity of the copper film of 1.67 μΩ·cm. Full article

Nitrogen (N) and sulfur (S) fertilization significantly affect seed yield and quality in Brassica oilseed crops. The effect of N and S management on the crop parameters (plant height, stem-base diameter, and number of branches), yield (seed yield components, seed and straw yields, harvest index—HI), and the quality of the seeds and oil (crude fat—CF, total protein—TP, crude fiber—CFR, fatty acids profile—FA, acid detergent fiber; and neutral detergent fiber) of oilseed radish (Raphanus sativus L. var. oleiformis Pers.) was analyzed in the study. The effect of N and S fertilization was evaluated in a field experiment in Bałcyny (north-eastern Poland) in 2020–2022. The experiment had a split-plot design with two factors and three replications. The first factor was the N rate (0, 30, 60, 90, 120 kg ha−1) and the second factor was the S rate (0, 15, 30 kg ha−1). Nitrogen fertilization stimulated stem elongation and branching. The average oilseed radish (OSR) seed yield ranged from 0.59 to 1.15–1.25 Mg ha−1. Seed yields increased significantly, up to 90 kg N ha−1 and 15 kg S ha−1. The N fertilizer use efficiency (NFUE) of OSR decreased with a rise in the N rate (from 4.22 to 2.19 kg of seeds per 1 kg N). The application of S did not increase NFUE. The HI ranged from 10% (0–30 kg N ha−1) to 12% (60 kg N ha−1). The contents of CF, TP, and CFR in OSR seeds (kg−1 dry matter—DM) were 383–384 g, 244–249 g, and 97–103 g, respectively. Nitrogen fertilization decreased the CF content (by 5%) and increased the contents of TP (by 5%) and CFR (by 16%) in OSR seeds. Sulfur fertilizer applied at 30 kg ha−1 decreased the CF content (by 2%), but it did not alter the content of TP or CFR. Oilseed radish oil contained 68–70% of monounsaturated FAs (MUFAs) (erucic acid accounted for 2/3 of the total MUFAs), 24–25% of polyunsaturated FAs (PUFAs), and 6–8% of saturated FAs (SFAs). Nitrogen fertilization increased the proportions of SFAs and PUFAs in OSR oil. Nitrogen rates of 60–90 kg ha−1 increased the contents of alpha-tocopherol (α-T), beta-tocopherol (β-T), and gamma-tocopherol (γ-T) in OSR seeds by 32%, 40%, and 27%, respectively. Sulfur fertilization increased the content of PUFAs and decreased the content of MUFAs in OSR oil, while it increased the contents of α-T (by 15%) and γ-T (by 19%) in OSR seeds. Proper N and S management in OSR cultivation can improve crop productivity and the processing suitability of seeds. Full article

To address the matching challenge between the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) Digital Elevation Model (DEM) and the Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MOLA) DEM, we propose a terrain matching framework based on the combination of point cloud coarse alignment and fine alignment methods. Firstly, we achieved global coarse localization of the HiRISE DEM through nearest neighbor matching of key Intrinsic Shape Signatures (ISS) points in the Fast Point Feature Histograms (FPFH) feature space. We introduced a graph matching strategy to mitigate gross errors in feature matching, employing a numerical method of non-cooperative game theory to solve the extremal optimization problem under Karush–Kuhn–Tucker (KKT) conditions. Secondly, to handle the substantial resolution disparities between the MOLA DEM and HiRISE DEM, we devised a smoothing weighting method tailored to enhance the Voxelized Generalized Iterative Closest Point (VGICP) approach for fine terrain registration. This involves leveraging the Euclidean distance between distributions to effectively weight loss and covariance, thereby reducing the results’ sensitivity to voxel radius selection. Our experiments show that the proposed algorithm improves the accuracy of terrain registration on the proposed Curiosity landing area’s, Mawrth Vallis, data by nearly 20%, with faster convergence and better algorithm robustness.
