Mixed-species plantations involving Eucalyptus and Acacia trees are an effective alternative for managing sustainable plantations. In this study, we evaluated the growth, productivity, nutrient return, and soil properties of a mixed Eucalyptus hybrid (Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehnh. × E. urophylla S.T. Blake; E) and Acacia auriculiformis A. Cunn. ex Benth. plantation (A) and Eucalyptus hybrid and A. auriculiformis plantations. The mixed Eucalyptus hybrid and A. auriculiformis plantation included three ratios at E33:A67, E50:A50, and E67:A33, while the Eucalyptus (E100) and A. auriculiformis (A100) plantations were established on degraded lands in the Had Wanakorn Forestry Research and Student Training Station, Prachuap Khiri Khan province, Thailand. Three replications within a plot size of 20 × 20 m2 were designed to plant Eucalyptus hybrid and A. auriculiformis seedlings at a spacing of 2 × 3 m2. The diameters at breast height (DBH) and height (H) of the Eucalyptus hybrid and A. auriculiformis were measured and monitored after planting for five years. The aboveground biomass of the five-year-old mixed and monoculture plantations was then estimated. Litterfall production and nutrient return from the mixed and monoculture plantations were measured for three years. In addition, soil samples at depths of 0–5, 5–10, and 10–20 cm were collected to analyze the soil’s chemical properties. Differences in growth, aboveground biomass, litterfall production, nutrient return, and soil properties were analyzed and tested using Tukey’s HSD. The results indicated that both the DBH and H of the Eucalyptus hybrid in the mixed and monoculture plantations were not significantly different (p > 0.05). Similarly, the DBH and H of A. auriculiformis in each treatment were also not significantly different (p > 0.05). However, the DBH and H of the Eucalyptus hybrid were higher than those of A. auriculiformis. The aboveground biomass for the mixed plantation ratios E50:A50, E100, E67:A33, and E33:A67 was not significantly different, while the stem biomass was the highest in E100. Litterfall production was influenced by the proportion of the Eucalyptus hybrid relative to A. auriculiformis, but the monoculture A100 plantation had the highest litter production. The nitrogen return estimated for the mixed plantation was between A100 and E100. Similarly, the total nitrogen in the topsoil (0–5 cm) of the mixed plantation was higher than that in the monoculture E100 plantation. These results indicate that mixing A. auriculiformis with Eucalyptus can improve soil nutrients and nutrient cycling and increase nutrient returns, suggesting that mixed plantations are an effective option for sustainable plantation management and can mitigate the negative environmental impacts of Eucalyptus monocultures. The use of organic mulch as a natural practice to enhance water retention and absorption is underexplored, highlighting the need for a deeper understanding of its effectiveness under varying conditions. The aim of this study was to investigate the process of interception, retention, and absorption of rainwater by different types, sizes, and densities of some organic mulch covers. Six organic mulches of various sizes were used, all largely available in the Brazilian semiarid: coconut leaf (cc), cashew leaf (ca), elephant grass (el), corn leaf (co), Brachiaria grass (br), and sugar cane leaf (su), under simulated rainfall conditions. The experimental scheme consisted of a factorial of six types of mulches, three sizes (50, 100, and 200 mm), and four densities (1, 2, 4, and 8 t ha−1). Water adsorption and retention curves were constructed, and the interception capacity of different vegetation materials was estimated. Analysis of variance, Tukey Test, Regression polynomial, and Principal Components Analysis were applied. It was observed that increasing density systematically led to an increase in water retention and absorption. For 8 t ha−1 the values were 11 to 23% for water retention and 7 to 16% for water absorption of the gross rainfall depth. When comparing 8 t ha−1 and 2 t ha−1 densities, rainfall retention and absorption increased more than 100%. Higher values were obtained for cashew and Brachiaria grass, improving water retention and cashew leaves for absorption. Coconut leaves promoted only 83% retention and 67% water absorption, when compared to the cashew leaf and Brachiaria grass. Full article

This study introduced a novel approach to 3D image segmentation utilizing a neural network framework applied to 2D depth map imagery, with Z axis values visualized through color gradation. This research involved comprehensive data collection from mechanically harvested wild blueberries to populate 3D and red–green–blue (RGB) images of filled totes through time-of-flight and RGB cameras, respectively. Advanced neural network models from the YOLOv8 and Detectron2 frameworks were assessed for their segmentation capabilities. Notably, the YOLOv8 models, particularly YOLOv8n-seg, demonstrated superior processing efficiency, with an average time of 18.10 ms, significantly faster than the Detectron2 models, which exceeded 57 ms, while maintaining high performance with a mean intersection over union (IoU) of 0.944 and a Matthew’s correlation coefficient (MCC) of 0.957. A qualitative comparison of segmentation masks indicated that the YOLO models produced smoother and more accurate object boundaries, whereas Detectron2 showed jagged edges and under-segmentation. Statistical analyses, including ANOVA and Tukey’s HSD test (α = 0.05), confirmed the superior segmentation performance of models on depth maps over RGB images (p < 0.001). This study concludes by recommending the YOLOv8n-seg model for real-time 3D segmentation in precision agriculture, providing insights that can enhance volume estimation, yield prediction, and resource management practices. The impact of adding silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) to bioceramic (BC) sealer on their ability to penetrate dentinal tubules is still unknown. Thus, this confocal laser scanning microscopic (CLSM) study aimed to assess the extent of dentinal tubule penetration of BC sealer (TotalFill® Hiflow BC Sealer™, FKG, Switzerland) with and without AgNPs using the single-cone (SC) technique and the continuous-wave condensation (CWC) technique. AgNPs alone as well as in a mixture with the BC sealer were characterized using scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Single-rooted extracted human teeth (N = 100) were selected and prepared, and then divided into four groups (n = 25). Group 1 (BC/SC): BC sealer obturated with the SC technique. Group 2 (BC+AgNPs/SC): BC sealer with AgNPs obturated with the SC technique. Group 3 (BC/CWC): BC Sealer obturated with the CWC technique. Group 4 (BC+AgNPs/CWC): BC Sealer with AgNPs obturated with the CWC technique. After 2 weeks, roots were horizontally sectioned to obtain 1 mm thick dentin slices that were evaluated with CLSM. Sealer dentinal tubule penetration area and the maximum depth of penetration were measured. Data were analyzed with one-way ANOVA and the Tukey multiple comparison tests (p ≤ 0.05). The characterization process demonstrated a spherical-shaped nanoparticles without obvious agglomeration. The results showed that Group 2 (BC+AgNPs/SC) significantly demonstrated the highest mean tubular penetration depth, while group 3 (BC/CWC) had the lowest mean depth. Group 2 (BC+AgNPs/SC) exhibited the significantly highest mean value for the total area of penetration. However, groups 1 (BC/SC) and 3 (BC/CWC) exhibited the lowest mean value of total penetration area, with no statistically significant difference. The integration of AgNPs with BC sealer markedly enhanced penetration into dentinal tubules. The SC technique demonstrated superior penetration relative to the CWC technique. Full article

This in vitro study evaluated the protective effect of an Si-containing toothpaste associated with different fluoride concentrations by reducing the depth of the demineralized lesions in dentin after cariogenic pH cycling. Methods: Sixty bovine dentin blocks (4 × 4 × 2 mm) were randomly assigned into five groups (n = twelve/group): RGS1 (Si toothpaste with 1450 ppm F), RGS2 (Si toothpaste with 1100 ppm F), RGS3 (fluoride-free Si toothpaste), negative control (NC) (fluoride-free toothpaste), and positive control (PC) (1450 ppm F toothpaste). The specimens underwent a three-day pH cycling model simulating the oral environment with twice-daily brushing. The mineral loss (ΔF) and lesion depth (ΔFmax) were assessed using quantitative light-induced fluorescence (QLF), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) provided a morphological analysis. Elemental analyses were performed with an energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS). ANOVA and Tukey’s test were used for the data analysis (α = 5%). Results: EDS confirmed the Si in the toothpaste formulations. The groups treated with fluoride silicon toothpastes (RGS1, RGS2) had significantly reduced mineral loss and lesion depth compared to the PC group. The NC group exhibited the greatest mineral loss and lesion depth. SEM images revealed occluded superficial dentin tubules and a protective mineral layer in the groups treated with Si toothpaste, whereas no deposition (NC group) or limited mineral deposition (PC group) was observed in the control groups. Conclusions: The findings suggest that the Si toothpastes favored protection against dentin demineralization, even at a lower concentration or free of fluoride, with dentin tubule occlusion, thus representing a promising oral care product over traditional fluoride toothpastes. This study aimed to evaluate the fracture resistance of root and sealer penetration after obturation using an epoxy resin sealer AH plus (AH+) and two different bioactive endodontic sealers, i.e., Totalfill BC Hiflow (TF BC), and experimental injectable bioactive glass (Exp.BG). A thermo-sensitive injectable sealer was prepared by using a non-ionic triblock copolymer and bioactive glass. The root canals of human extracted teeth were obturated with the respective sealers. The fracture resistance was analyzed at different time intervals, i.e., days 7, 30, and 90. The morphological and elemental analyses of the fractured roots were conducted with a scanning electron microscopy and a electron dispersive spectroscopy. Sealer penetration depth and the percentage of penetrated sealers into the dentinal tubules were assessed with the confocal laser scanning microscope. Statistical analysis was performed using a one-way ANOVA post hoc Tukey’s test. The mean fracture force in AH+ was significantly higher on day 30 (664.08 ± 138.8 N) compared to day 7 (476.07 ± 173.2 N) and day 90 (493.38 ± 120.18 N). There was no statistically significant difference between the TF BC and Exp.BG at different time intervals. The maximum penetration was observed in the middle region compared to coronal and apical for the Exp.BG, followed by the TF BC and AH+ groups; however, a nonsignificant difference in penetration was found over time. It is concluded that the TF BC group showed overall better fracture resistance than AH+ at day 90. Exp.BG showed comparable sealer penetration to those of TF BC and better than those of AH+. Effects of heavy metals on soil microbial communities have been extensively studied due to their persistence in the environment and imposed threats to living organisms; however, there is a lack of in-depth studies of the impacts of heavy metals on plant endophyte communities. Therefore, the responses of plant endophyte communities to different concentrations of heavy metals were investigated in this study. The endophyte communities of plants existing in severely (W1, Pb, 110.49 mg/kg, Cd, 1.11 mg/kg), moderately (W2, Pb, 55.06 mg/kg, Cd, 0.48 mg/kg), and mildly (W3, Pb, 39.06 mg/kg, Cd, 0.20 mg/kg) contaminated soils were analyzed by 16s rRNA high-throughput Illumina sequencing. Furthermore, networks were constructed to illustrate the relationships between microorganisms and environmental factors. High-quality sequences were clustered at a 97% similarity level. Results revealed that the diversity of the community and relative abundance of Cyanobacteria phylum increased with decreasing levels of pollution. Cyanobacteria and Proteobacteria were found to be the dominant phylum, while Methylobacterium and Sphingomonas were observed as the dominant genus. Tukey’s HSD test showed that the relative abundances of Cyanobacteria and Proteobacteria phyla and Methylobacterium and Sphingomonas genera differed significantly (p < 0.01) among the plants of the three sample sites. Environmental factor analysis revealed a significant negative correlation (p < 0.01) of Cyanobacteria and a significant positive correlation (p < 0.01) of Methylobacterium with the heavy metal content in the environment. These findings suggest that Cyanobacteria and Methylobacterium may be phylum and genus indicators, respectively, of heavy metal toxicity. Tax4Fun analysis showed the effect of heavy metal toxicity on the abundance of genes involved in plant metabolism. In addition, culturable endophytic strains were isolated to study their resistance to heavy metal stress and their ability to promote plant growth. The potting tests showed that the JG1 strain was tolerant to heavy metals, and it could significantly promote the growth of the host plant under stress caused by multiple heavy metals. Compared to the control, the JG1-treated plants showed a 23.14% increase in height and a 12.84% increase in biomass. Moreover, AP, AK, and HN contents in JG1-treated plants were 20.87%, 12.55%, and 9.03% higher, respectively, under heavy metal stress. The results of this study provide a scientific basis for the construction of an efficient plant endophyte restoration system. Full article

The adoption of a no-till system presents difficulties in maintaining the potential crop yield under long-term conditions when compacted soil layers are observed in the field. The research objective was to assess the benefits of soil intervention in a traditional area of no-till system while considering the production parameters of corn (Zea mays L.) under tropical conditions. The area was installed considering 24 experimental units, including 6 treatments, a 3 × 2 scheme, and 4 repetitions (3 soil management systems and 2 crop hybrids). The soil scarification was carried out at two depths, 0.15 m and 0.30 m, to compare its influence on corn yield. The number of days of plants’ emergence, seed depth, longitudinal distribution of seedlings, phytotechnical parameters, and crop yield in the field were evaluated. The dataset was subjected to the F Test and Tukey test (p < 0.05) to compare the means by each attribute and treatment. The adopted hybrids, as well as soil-management systems in the experimental area, did not interfere with the quality of the sowing and quantitative parameters of the crop (CV = 15% for normal distribution on plants’ spacing within rows). So, there is no need to scarify soil with the aim of increasing corn yield under the evaluated field conditions. Full article

Elodea nuttallii represents non-native and highly invasive species in Europe that significantly influence freshwater plant communities by decreasing the diversity of native species. This study aimed to determine whether the morphological and anatomical features of Potamogeton gramineus, a native species in Vlasina Lake, differ between sites where it coexists with E. nuttallii and those where E. nuttallii is not present. Environmental variables such as water depth, temperature, pH, conductivity, saturation, and O2 concentration were included in the analysis. Analyses were conducted on 32 morphological and anatomical features of P. gramineus collected from six sites within Vlasina Lake, comprising three sites where E. nuttallii was present and three sites where it was absent. The datasets containing morphometric and environmental variables underwent analysis using standard univariate techniques (Descriptive, ANOVA), Tukey’s Honest Significant Difference (HSD) test, Student’s t-test, and the Mann–Whitney U test, as well as multivariate statistical methods such as Canonical Discriminant Analysis (CDA). The results show the presence of morphological differentiation among P. gramineus individuals across the analyzed sites. These findings suggest that morphological and anatomical features, such as epidermis, mesophyll, palisade, and aerenchyma tissue thickness in floating leaves, number, length, width, and the surface area of stomata, as well as the width of submersed leaves and stem aerenchyma tissue thickness, effectively differentiate individuals that coexist with E. nuttallii and individuals that growth without its presence. Moreover, they indicate that P. gramineus exhibits a notable ability to modify its morphological traits in response to invasion. Full article

The study aimed to assess the marginal, axial, and internal adaptation, as well as the fracture resistance of zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate (ZLS) endocrowns with varying pulpal inlay extensions and marginal geometry. Sixty extracted maxillary first molar teeth were divided into six groups (n = 10) according to pulpal inlay extension and marginal configuration. The first three groups (J2, J3, and J4) utilized prepared teeth for endocrowns without ferrule design and 2 mm, 3 mm, and 4 mm pulpal extensions, respectively. The second three groups (F2, F3, and F4) utilized prepared teeth with 1 mm shoulder margins and 2 mm, 3 mm, and 4 mm pulpal extensions. The endocrowns were fabricated from ZLS blocks using CAD/CAM milling technology. After cementation, the specimens underwent thermal aging for 5000 cycles and were evaluated for marginal adaptation. Using a universal testing machine, the fracture resistance was tested under quasistatic loading (1 mm/min). Two-way ANOVA and the Tukey’s post hoc test were employed for data analysis (p ≤ 0.05). The results of this study revealed that endocrowns without ferrule exhibited superior fracture strength than a 1 mm ferrule design p < 0.05, irrespective of the inlay depth. All designs with and without ferrule and all inlay depths showed clinically acceptable marginal and internal fit. The conventional endocrown design without ferrule and 2 mm inlay depth showed the lowest surface gap. The pulpal surface showed the highest discrepancy among all groups compared to the other surfaces. Endocrowns without ferrule are more conservative and have higher fracture strength than 1 mm ferrule designs; extending the inlay depth showed a significant increase in fracture resistance of the 1 mm ferrule design, but not for the conventional design without ferrule and 2 mm inlay depth. All groups exhibited a high auspicious fracture strength value for molar endocrown restorations. Full article

Generative models have recently received a lot of attention. However, a challenge with such models is that it is usually not possible to compute the likelihood function, which makes parameter estimation or training of the models challenging. The most commonly used alternative strategy is called likelihood-free estimation, based on finding values of the model parameters such that a set of selected statistics have similar values in the dataset and in samples generated from the model. However, a challenge is how to select statistics that are efficient in estimating unknown parameters. The most commonly used statistics are the mean vector, variances, and correlations between variables, but they may be less relevant in estimating the unknown parameters. We suggest utilizing Tukey depth contours (TDCs) as statistics in likelihood-free estimation. TDCs are highly flexible and can capture almost any property of multivariate data, in addition, they seem to be as of yet unexplored for likelihood-free estimation. We demonstrate that TDC statistics are able to estimate the unknown parameters more efficiently than mean, variance, and correlation in likelihood-free estimation. We further apply the TDC statistics to estimate the properties of requests to a computer system, demonstrating their real-life applicability. The suggested method is able to efficiently find the unknown parameters of the request distribution and quantify the estimation uncertainty. Full article

The aim of this study is to assess and analyze the intratubular penetration of the intracanal medications nitrofurantoin (Nit), triple antibiotic paste (TAP), and calcium hydroxide (CH). Sixty freshly extracted single-rooted teeth were acquired and decoronated to a standard length of 15 mm. To prepare specimens up to size F3, rotary ProTaper instrumentation was employed. The prepared teeth were divided into three groups, each of which received one of the tested intracanal medicaments: Group I (calcium hydroxide), Group II (triple antibiotic paste), and Group III (nitrofurantoin). Using a size #30 Lentulo spiral, a freshly prepared therapeutic paste was placed into the canals, and the intracanal medicaments were allowed to set in the incubator at 100% humidity. The samples were subsequently sliced perpendicularly to their long axis using a precision saw and assessed under a scanning electron microscope to assess the depth of penetration of intracanal medicaments at the coronal, middle, and apical portions of the root canal dentin. The data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey’s post hoc test. The statistical analysis revealed a significant difference between the experimental groups in the quantity and depth of sealer penetration (p < 0.05). In particular, as compared to the Nit group, both the CH and TAP groups had significantly smaller penetration areas (p < 0.05). In conclusion, this ongoing investigation indicates that nitrofurantoin penetrated dentinal tubules better than calcium hydroxide or triple antibiotic paste. Full article

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of essential oils from the fruits of Citrus sinensis and Xylopia aromatica, included in broiler feed, on blood parameters, the biometrics of digestive organs, bone analyses, and the biochemical profiles of the viscera, as well as the histomorphometry of the small intestine. In this study, 180 one-day-old male chicks of the Cobb 500 strain were fed a corn and soybean meal over three treatments and six replications, and the experimental design was completely randomized. The data were subjected to an analysis of variance and a Tukey test at a 5% significance level. The effect of the experimental diets on performance, blood parameters, biometrics of the digestive organs, bone analysis, and biochemical profiles of the viscera, as well as the histomorphometry of the small intestine, were evaluated. The compounds identified in the essential oil of X. aromatica were sylvestrene, α-pinene, and β-pinene, while in C. sinensis they were limonene and myrcene. The essential oils of C. sinensis and X. aromatica had no significant effect on performance at 14 days. The effects of the presence of the essential oils of C. sinensis and X. aromatica on the response were beneficial: there were reductions in liver lipids, cholesterol, and triglycerides, and in the depths of the crypts in the jejunum of chickens. So, the essential oils from the fruits of C. sinensis and X. aromatica can be used in broiler chickens to improve the lipid profiles of birds without affecting their performance. Full article

Introduction: Several advantages, including improved aesthetics and conservative cavity preparation, made resin-based composite (RBC) a popular restorative material. However, several limitations come with RBC restorations such as the necessity for proper isolation of the tooth and an incremental layering for the material due to the limitations of the depth of cure. Despite these advantages and limitations, the usage of these restorative materials is increasingly being expanded due to the advancement made since their introduction. To overcome some of the limitations, several types of RBC restorations were developed. Materials and Methods: Four different RBC materials used for class II restorations in primary and permanent teeth were compared: Z350 XT Filtek™ Universal Restorative (ZXT), Filtek™ Bulk Fill Flowable Restorative (FBF), Beautifil-Bulk Flowable (BBF) and Tetric™ N-Flow (TNF). Flexure strength, elastic modulus, surface roughness, microhardness and microleakage were assessed using standard methods or previously published protocols. The data and differences between the groups were analyzed using One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), Tukey’s multiple comparisons, Kruskal–Wallis and Wilcoxon rank-sum (Mann–Whitney) tests. Results: The study found that BBF (86.24 ± 7.41 MPa) and ZXT (64.45 ± 11.52 MPa) had higher flexural strength than FBF (50.89 ± 8.44 MPa) and TNF (50.67 ± 9.40 MPa), while both exhibited the highest values of surface roughness. Elastic modulus was the highest with BBF, which was not statistically significant from FBF or ZXT (p > 0.05). ZXT (109.7 ± 7.83 VH) exhibited the highest value of microhardness, which was statistically significant from the other three materials (p < 0.0001). Microleakage was assessed after thermocycling for 20,000 cycles to simulate two years in the mouth. FBF (70%) exhibited the most resistance to microleakage. Conclusions: Different types of RBC restorations exhibit different characteristics. The clinician needs to choose the most appropriate restorative material based on different clinical scenarios. This study aimed to examine depth of cure (DoC), mass change, water sorption and solubility of dual-cured bulk-fill restorative materials (Surfil One and Activa) in comparison with a light-cured bulk-fill composite (Filtek One Bulk-Fill) and a resin-modified glass ionomer (Fuji II LC). Twenty specimens were prepared of each material using stainless steel molds designed with a slot (8 × 4 × 2 mm) and irradiated for either 20 or 40 s. The Vickers hardness (VHN) was measured at every 0.5 mm to assess the DoC after 24 h of storage at 37 °C. The depth of cure was reported as the depth corresponding to 80% of the maximum Vickers hardness. Disc-shaped specimens were prepared of each material (n = 5) to investigate mass change, sorption and solubility after 4 months of water storage. The data were analyzed using a two-way and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by the Tukey post hoc test (p ≤ 0.05). Fuji II LC had the greatest DoC while Activa had the lowest. The two different irradiation times did not demonstrate a significant difference in DoC for all dual-cured materials (p > 0.05). Fuji II LC had the highest sorption while Filtek One showed the lowest. Surefil One and Fuji II LC had a negative solubility. This study concluded that dual-cured materials showed different depth of cure values despite having the same setting reaction. Both materials exhibited a high water sorption, which might jeopardize their dimensional stability and effect their clinical performance. Full article
