Study on the Reasonability of Single-Objective Optimization in Miniscrew Design

Miniscrews are used in orthodontic treatment and can be applied immediately after implantation, making their initial stability crucial. However, clinical reports show that the success rate is not 100%, and many researchers have tried to identify the factors influencing success and optimize designs. A review of the literature reveals that studies on the same geometric parameter of miniscrews using different indicators and different brand samples have led to conflicting results. This study will use consistent miniscrew conditions to verify whether the design differences in the literature are reasonable. This study employs the Taguchi method and ANOVA for optimization analysis. The four control factors comprise thread pitch, thread depth, tip taper angle, and self-tapping notch. Using an L9(3⁴) orthogonal array, the experimental models are reduced to nine. The primary stability indicators for the miniscrew include bending strength, pull-out strength, insertion torque, and self-tapping performance. The results of the single-objective experiments in this study align with the findings from the other literature. However, when analyzed collectively, they do not yield the same optimal solution. Under equal weighting, the combined multi-objective optimal solution is A2B2C1D1. This study exhibits minimal experimental error, ensuring high analytical reliability. The findings confirm that the optimal design does not converge across four single-objective analyses, as different stability indicators yield contradictory trends in design parameters. Given that these four indicators already demonstrate notable discrepancies, the influence of additional stability factors would be even more pronounced. Therefore, a multi-objective optimization approach is essential for the rational design of miniscrews. Full article

In the past, it has been reported that the black South African population may have a cardio-protective lipid profile; however, this may no longer be the case with urbanization, industrialization, and the nutritional transition that occurred in South Africa. Although these transitions may be low in rural areas, one would expect this influence to be lower in the rural populations; however, they are not immune to these changes. Hence, the present study aimed to determine the association of serum lipid profiles and lipid ratios with kidney dysfunction. This cross-sectional retrospective study used the AWI-Gen 1 dataset. This study consisted of 1399 participants who took part in the AWI-Gen phase 1. Participants aged below 40 years, pregnant women, mentally disturbed and participants with incomplete information to answer the aims and objectives of this study were excluded in the analysis of this study. The data were analyzed using SPSS. In the present study, the prevalence of kidney dysfunction was 11.7%, with women having a significantly higher prevalence as compared to men. Women with kidney dysfunction had significantly higher TC, TG, TG/HDL-C, and TC/HDL-C compared to those without kidney dysfunction. However, in men, there was no association between the two groups. TC, and LDL/HDL-C were associated with kidney dysfunction in women only. TG/HDL-C was associated with kidney dysfunction in both women and men. Elevated TC, LDL/HDL-C, TC/HDL-C, and TG/HDL-C were the risk factors for kidney dysfunction, particularly in women. This suggests that TC, TC/HDL-C, and TG/HDL-C levels may be useful for risk stratification and a potential target to reduce the risk of developing kidney dysfunction, particularly in women. Upcoming longitudinal studies examining the causal connection between serum lipids, and lipid ratios with the risk of kidney dysfunction are necessary to fully understand the potential relationship between TG/HDL-C, TC, and TC/HDL-C levels and kidney dysfunction. Anthocyanin synthetase (ANS), a key enzyme in the final step of the anthocyanin synthesis pathway, catalyzes the conversion of leucoanthocyanidins to anthocyanins. In this study, an ANS structural protein (TRINITY_DN18024_c0_g1) was found to be associated with anthocyanin accumulation in Acer pseudosieboldianum leaves, named ApsANS. Real-time quantitative fluorescence PCR analysis revealed that the expression of ApsANS was significantly higher in red-leaved (variant) than green-leaved (wild-type) strains, which was consistent with the transcriptome data. The UPLC results showed that the cyanidin metabolites may be the key substance influencing the final color formation of Acer pseudosieboldianum. The ApsANS gene was cloned and analyzed through bioinformatics analysis. ApsANS has a total length of 1371 bp, and it encodes 360 amino acids. Analysis of the structural domain of the ApsANS protein revealed that ApsANS contains a PcbC functional domain. Protein secondary structure predictions indicate that α-helix, irregularly coiled, and extended chains are the major building blocks. Subcellular localization predicted that ApsANS might be localized in the nucleus. The phylogenetic tree revealed that ApsANS is relatively closely related to ApANS in Acer palmatum. The prediction of miRNA showed that the ApsANS gene is regulated by miR6200. This study provides a theoretical reference for further analyzing the regulatory mechanism of leaf color formation in Acer pseudosieboldianum. Full article

Central Venous Pressure as a Predictor of Acute Kidney Injury in Cardiac Surgery: A Systematic Review of Observational Studies

Background/Objectives: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a syndrome characterized by impaired kidney function, which is associated with reduced survival and increased morbidity. Central venous pressure (CVP) is a widely used hemodynamic parameter for assessing the volume status of patients and evaluating their response to fluid resuscitation. This systematic review aims to analyze various prospective and retrospective observational and controlled trials to determine the association between CVP and the risk of developing AKI in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. Additionally, it examines whether elevated CVP serves as an accurate predictor of AKI in this patient population. Methods: A systematic review was conducted following the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines, using PubMed as the primary database. The search focused on studies published after 2014 that included adult patients undergoing cardiac surgery with reported measurements of CVP and kidney function assessment. Studies conducted on animals, pediatric populations, those published before 2014, or in languages other than English were excluded from the review. Results: Through the analysis of 21 studies, a clear association between higher CVP and increased AKI risk emerged. The most critical CVP thresholds identified were 10 mmHg, 12 mmHg, 14 mmHg, and 20 mmHg, with risk increasing progressively beyond these values. CVP ≥ 10 mmHg was the most commonly reported cutoff for elevated AKI risk, showing 1.42 to 4.53 times increased odds. CVP ≥ 12 mmHg further amplified the risk, while CVP ≥ 14 mmHg was consistently associated with severe AKI and the need for RRT. The highest threshold (CVP ≥ 20 mmHg) showed the greatest risk escalation, linked to fluid overload, right heart failure, and mortality. Studies also suggest an optimal CVP range of 6–8 mmHg to minimize AKI incidence. Conclusions: Elevated CVP is an independent risk factor for the development of AKI in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. These findings suggest that CVP monitoring can play a significant role in predicting AKI and guiding perioperative management strategies. Full article

(1) While photo-identification has been used to study sperm whales worldwide, no long-term photo-id studies are available from the Southern Tyrrhenian Sea for the Mediterranean endangered population. (2) Here, sperm whale occurrence, group size, and the type of encounters were investigated around the Aeolian archipelago (Southern Italy) by photo-ID data collected between 2013 and 2024. Data were obtained through dedicated boat surveys and recreational sailors’ reports. (3) During 58 sighting events, 125 sperm whales were encountered, 60 of whom were photo-identified and cataloged. Of these, two sperm whales were found entangled. Only five individuals were re-sighted in later years or seasons. Encounters were more frequent in autumn, consisting mainly of solitary individuals (53.4%, n = 31) and aggregations of clustered, often not sexed, animals (23.5%, n = 8). Social units of females and calves were also encountered (8.6%, n = 5). (4) The low site fidelity and the group types encountered suggest that dispersed young males and social groups could use the area simultaneously. (4) Future matching of these data with databases from other surveyed areas, acoustic surveys, and enhanced analysis of age classes are crucial to better define the ecological role of the study area for the Mediterranean sperm whale population. Numerous scales have been developed to assess pet–owner relationship quality. One commonly used measure is the Monash Dog Owner Relationship Scale (MDORS) and its various derivatives. Since this scale was published in 2006, many social changes have occurred, necessitating a review and, if necessary, refinement of this measure. We sought to investigate the internal consistency and structure of the existing instrument, as well as an expanded and modified version of the scale, in a contemporary adult sample of over 350 adults, recruited to be potentially less dog-centric than previous samples. The existing three-factor structure of the MDORS appeared reasonably sound, but a Principal Components Analysis with modified items resulted in identification of a four-component structure. Two of the components approximated existing MDORS measures: the Perceived Costs of Dog Ownership and the owner’s Emotional Reliance on their pet. Rather than replicating the existing Pet Owner Interaction subscale, however, we identified two different types of engagement: Affectionate Engagement and Active Engagement. The subscale scores and the total score were, as expected, intercorrelated with each other and with the Lexington Attachment to Pets Scale. Perhaps surprisingly, however, they were statistically associated with very few demographic variables, such as owner gender, age, education, or residence location, and they were rarely associated with dog variables such as age, sex, or source. This may speak to the current near-universality of strong human–dog relationships, which we propose can now be assessed using two new measures: the Dog Owner Relationship Scale 28 (DORS28) and a shortened version, the Dog Owner Relationship Scale 12 (DORS12). Despite the importance of criminogenic thinking in addressing criminal behavior, validated instruments to measure these cognitions in Portuguese forensic settings are scarce. Therefore, the main aim of this study was to explore the psychometric properties of the Criminogenic Cognitions Scale (CCS) in a sample of 364 Portuguese incarcerated males (Mage = 37.88, SD = 10.88). An exploratory factor analysis was conducted, indicating a 15-item, two-factor structure (KMO = 0.82; Bartlett’s test, χ2 = 1841.2, df = 105, p < 0.001). The CCS dimensions, comprising Short-Term Orientation and Responsibility Evasion and Authority Resistance, demonstrated satisfactory psychometric properties, including convergent validity with antisocial traits, moral disengagement, and self-control dimensions, as well as internal consistency (omega coefficient = 0.60–0.77; composite reliability = 74–91; coefficient H = 89–95), and sensitivity of items. The CCS is a valuable tool within prison settings for assessing criminogenic thinking patterns, supporting risk assessment, the development of targeted rehabilitation programs, and monitoring cognitive changes over time to reduce recidivism, thereby promoting inmates’ safer reintegration into society. Overall, our findings suggest the CCS is a promising tool for assessing criminogenic cognitions in the forensic Portuguese population. Full article

The thioredoxin (Trx) system is one of the most significant systems in living organisms as it regulates cellular redox reactions and plays a pivotal protective role within the cell by promoting redox homeostasis. Trx and thioredoxin reductase (TrxR) are the core oxidoreductases of the Trx system. In this study, the novel full-length cDNAs of LvTrx2 and LvTrxR were cloned from Litopenaeus vannamei. The ORFs of LvTrx2 and LvTrxR were 453 bp and 1785 bp, encoding polypeptides consisting of 150 and 596 amino acids. Sequence alignment analysis revealed that the amino acid sequence of LvTrx2 shared a high degree of identity (93%) with that of Penaeus chinensis, while in LvTrxR, it exhibited a similarity level of 95% with previously submitted Penaeus chinensis and Penaeus monodon sequences. Regarding tissue-specific expression patterns, LvTrx2 showed its highest expression levels in hepatopancreas and gill. For LvTrxR, the highest expression was observed in gill followed by hepatopancreas and intestine. During exposure to ammonia-N, there was a significant upregulation in the relative mRNA levels of LvTrx2 and LvTrxR in hepatopancreas and gill, with the peak values occurring at 24 h or 48 h of exposure. After LPS injection, the LvTrx2 and LvTrxR transcripts in hepatopancreas and gill had different upregulated levels. These findings suggest that LvTrx2 and LvTrxR play pivotal roles in enhancing stress resistance and bolstering antibacterial defense mechanisms in L. vannamei. To explore the roles, LvTrx2 expression was knocked down in vivo to verify the defense mechanism against 4-NP stress. LvTrx2 silencing in 4-NP-challenged shrimp could significantly induce the gene expression of antioxidant-related genes (except for LvTrxR) and aggravate the oxidative damage of lipids. This study suggests that the Trx system is involved in regulating the antioxidant processes, and LvTrx2 and LvTrxR play a vital role in defense responses against environmental stress. Full article

At-Home Stroke Neurorehabilitation: Early Findings with the NeuroExo BCI System

Background: Democratized access to safe and effective robotic neurorehabilitation for stroke survivors requires innovative, affordable solutions that can be used not only in clinics but also at home. This requires the high usability of the devices involved to minimize costs associated with support from physical therapists or technicians. Methods: This paper describes the early findings of the NeuroExo brain–machine interface (BMI) with an upper-limb robotic exoskeleton for stroke neurorehabilitation. This early feasibility study consisted of a six-week protocol, with an initial training and BMI calibration phase at the clinic followed by 60 sessions of neuromotor therapy at the homes of the participants. Pre- and post-assessments were used to assess users’ compliance and system performance. Results: Participants achieved a compliance rate between 21% and 100%, with an average of 69%, while maintaining adequate signal quality and a positive perceived BMI performance during home usage with an average Likert scale score of four out of five. Moreover, adequate signal quality was maintained for four out of five participants throughout the protocol. These findings provide valuable insights into essential components for comprehensive rehabilitation therapy for stroke survivors. Furthermore, linear mixed-effects statistical models showed a significant reduction in trial duration (p-value < 0.02) and concomitant changes in brain patterns (p-value < 0.02). Conclusions: the analysis of these findings suggests that a low-cost, safe, simple-to-use BMI system for at-home stroke rehabilitation is feasible. Full article

This paper proposes a novel method for the design of arbitrary tri-band rectifiers. This method proposes a novel multiband impedance matching network (IMN) consisting of three Transmission Lines (TLINs), which can realise the matching of source and complex impedance matching in any three bands. For the first time, a network is proposed that realises the second harmonic suppression in three bands using only three TLINs. The Harmonic Suppression Network (HSN) is independent of other parts, which reduces the interaction between TLINs and simplifies the derivation process. For demonstration, the three bands are set to 2.45, 3.5 and 5.8 GHz in the theoretical analysis of closed-form equations. The measured results show that the maximum Power Conversion Efficiencies (PCEs) are 75.4%, 71.2%, and 80.9% at a load of 200 Ω, respectively. This approach to designing compact and efficient tri-band rectifiers has great potential for wireless power transfer applications. Full article

Boron (B) is an essential and widely studied element in plants. Due to B dynamics in highly weathered soils, its concentration is generally low. Among other benefits, B interacts with calcium pectate, promotes stability on cellular membrane, and influences directly on plant nutrients uptake and non-structural metabolites synthesis. In sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) crop, adequate B supply has been associated with juice quality and yield of stalks and sugar and its response on adequate B concentration on commercial fields can differ greatly even into a group of varieties recommended for the same production environment. In this context, the authors aimed to assess the effects of B availability on sugarcane root and shoot development, nutrient status, and carbohydrate synthesis and allocation in two sugarcane varieties recommended for the same production environment using hydroponic solution. The experimental design was completely randomized and consisted of four treatments and four replicates. The treatments comprised two sugarcane varieties (RB867515 and RB92579) and two B concentrations (0.05 and 0.5 mg L−1) considered deficient and adequate, respectively, for plant development. Carbohydrate partitioning, nutrient concentrations in various plant parts, and growth and morphological parameters were evaluated. Under adequate B supply, the total concentrations of reducing sugars and sucrose increased 67 and 20% in RB867515 and 30 and 20% in RB92579, respectively, whereas starch decreased by 27% for both varieties. Adequate B supply increased the concentrations of all elements in all plant organs, except for N and K in leaves, and improved most yield and morphological parameters. Principal component analysis correlated the higher carbohydrates concentration and yield parameters with the variety RB92579, whereas the highest concentration of most nutrients was mainly associated with the variety RB867515, especially under adequate B supply. The main influence of adequate B supply was on carbohydrate synthesis. Although the sugarcane varieties responded differently to B availability, their biometric parameters were enhanced by adequate B supply. These results emphasize the need for B fertilization, regardless of the sugarcane variety’s susceptibility to B deficiency. Full article

The Effect of Exercise-Based Interventions on Health-Related Quality of Life of Patients with Hematological Malignancies: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Background/Objectives: Hematological cancers encompass a collection of heterogeneous conditions. The need for repeated treatments and prolonged hospitalization leads to a decrease in health-related quality of life. This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluate the effect of exercise interventions on functioning scales, global health status, and symptoms in patients with hematological cancers. Methods: PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus databases were systematically screened, and randomized controlled trials were included. The primary outcome was health-related quality of life assessed through the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life questionnaire. Meta-analysis was performed using a random-effects model and 95% confidence intervals. Results: A total of 14 trials involving 837 patients with mixed cancer types were included. Most studies evaluated exercise interventions during hospitalization, with aerobic and resistance training at moderate intensity being the most common modalities and adherence rates ranging from 28% to 100%. Exercise programs significantly improved physical (SMD 0.23; 95% CI: 0.06 to 0.40; p = 0.008), emotional (SMD 0.19; 95% CI: 0.03 to 0.36; p = 0.020) and cognitive functioning (SMD 0.20; 95% CI: 0.02 to 0.37; p = 0.026), and global health status (SMD 0.24; 95% CI: 0.03 to 0.46; p = 0.027). Significant reductions were observed in fatigue (SMD −0.33; 95% CI: −0.52 to −0.14; p = 0.001), pain (SMD −0.34; 95% CI: −0.53 to −0.15; p = 0.000), and insomnia (SMD −0.22; 95% CI: −0.41 to −0.03; p = 0.024). Heterogeneity was minimal across most domains, suggesting consistent findings. Conclusions: Exercise interventions are effective in enhancing functioning scales and global health status and reducing symptom burden in patients receiving intensive treatments. Future research is required to explore the long-term effects of exercise and develop tailored programs for specific hematologic malignancies and treatment settings. Full article

Background/Objectives: Cancer diagnosis and oncological treatments often lead to cognitive impairments, particularly in prospective memory, which affects the ability to recall future intentions. These difficulties can significantly impact therapeutic adherence, especially in the early stages of treatment, where timely medication and appointment adherence are critical. Despite this, effective measures for assessing prospective memory in cancer survivors remain limited. The current study aimed to translate and culturally adapt the Short Form of the Metacognitive Prospective Memory Inventory (MPMI-s) for use with Portuguese cancer survivors. Methods: The translation process involved back-translation, expert review, and pre-testing to ensure content validity. Psychometric evaluation was conducted with a sample of 111 cancer survivors [M(SD) = 49.3(9.4), ages 18–65], assessing internal consistency, factorial validity through principal components analysis, and convergent validity. Results: A final 18-item version of the MPMI-S demonstrated strong reliability and validity, comprising four factors: prospective forgetting, monitoring and planning strategies, imagery and visualization strategies, and external aid strategies. Significant correlations were found between these dimensions and traits such as conscientiousness, agreeableness, emotional stability, as well as distress and cognitive functioning. Conclusions: These findings underscore the potential of the MPMI-S as a valuable tool in clinical settings, offering insights not only into self-reported prospective memory abilities but also into the compensatory strategies employed by individuals in their daily routines. By integrating these aspects, this measure helps to identify key opportunities for rehabilitation aimed at minimizing the functional impact of the disease. Full article

The complex and specialized terminology of financial language in Portuguese-speaking markets create significant challenges for natural language processing (NLP) applications, which must capture nuanced linguistic and contextual information to support accurate analysis and decision-making. This paper presents DeB3RTa, a transformer-based model specifically developed through a mixed-domain pretraining strategy that combines extensive corpora from finance, politics, business management, and accounting to enable a nuanced understanding of financial language. DeB3RTa was evaluated against prominent models—including BERTimbau, XLM-RoBERTa, SEC-BERT, BusinessBERT, and GPT-based variants—and consistently achieved significant gains across key financial NLP benchmarks. To maximize adaptability and accuracy, DeB3RTa integrates advanced fine-tuning techniques such as layer reinitialization, mixout regularization, stochastic weight averaging, and layer-wise learning rate decay, which together enhance its performance across varied and high-stakes NLP tasks. These findings underscore the efficacy of mixed-domain pretraining in building high-performance language models for specialized applications. With its robust performance in complex analytical and classification tasks, DeB3RTa offers a powerful tool for advancing NLP in the financial sector and supporting nuanced language processing needs in Portuguese-speaking contexts. E-commerce sites have generated large amounts of unstructured data as they allow millions of users to generate product reviews. Thus, although there have been significant improvements in the characteristics of big data, such as speed and volume, developing various analysis techniques to monitor, understand, and extract useful information from this web-based data has become challenging. This study aims to analyze cosmetic products on a Turkish-based e-commerce website with sentiment analysis and to create a new domain-specific Turkish sentiment dictionary model with manual labeling. In the study, a Turkish sentiment dictionary consisting of 65,378 words was created by manually labeling 875,455 product reviews for 24 cosmetic brands sold on the Turkey-based trendyol e-commerce site, and sentiment analysis was performed using this dictionary. The dataset, divided into seven product groups, was analyzed using K-NN, SVM, DT, RF, and LR algorithms to address three classification problems. The algorithms were evaluated with comparative analysis using accuracy, precision, recall, and f-1 score metrics. SVM gave the highest performance result with over 93% accuracy, 92% precision, 93% recall, and a 91% f-1 score in all product groups. The dictionary model created for the cosmetics industry in the study helps businesses and researchers to use their resources more efficiently and save time by performing fast and low-cost analyses on large datasets of product reviews. Moreover, by analyzing customer feedback, brands can offer long-lasting and environmentally friendly products that align with customers’ feelings. Thus, businesses have the opportunity to develop or improve products. Full article
