This study was conducted to investigate the effect of body condition (BC) and other characteristics on estrus responses post altrenogest treatment and on reproductive performance in 161 gilts, bred artificially, treated with 20 mg altrenogest orally for 18 consecutive days. Parameters recorded at the beginning of altrenogest treatment included age and body weight. Backfat (BFT) and muscle thickness (MT), both defining BC, puberty status and uterine size (UtS, based on cross-sectional areas of the uterine horns) were recorded by real-time-ultrasound (RTU), and BFT, along with MT together with ovary status, were recorded again at the end of altrenogest treatment. Estrus rate (ER), interval of last altrenogest treatment onset of estrus (ATOE), conception (CR) and farrowing (FR) rates, litter size characteristics (total, life, and still born piglets; TB, LB, SB) and individual piglet birth weights (IPWs) were recorded. Average age and weight were 252.6 ± 7.5 days and 153.0 ± 12.4 kg, respectively. BFT and MT were 0.9 ± 0.2 and 6.0 ± 0.4 cm, respectively, at the beginning of altrenogest treatment, and similar at the end. 147 gilts were determined as pubertal (PUB) and 14 prepubertal (PRE). All gilts only had follicles of 3.2 ± 0.4 mm on average at the end of altrenogest treatment. ER, ATOE, CR, FR, TB, LB, SB and IPW were 99.4%, 5.9 ± 0.5 days, 100%, 95.6%, 18.1 ± 2.6, 17.4 ± 2.5, 0.7 ± 1.0, 1.3 ± 0.2 kg, respectively. PUB and PRE did not differ, or only marginally differed, in all recorded parameters. BC or pubertal status did not have a great impact on the efficacy of altrenogest treatment or reproductive performance. However, UtS was significantly smaller in PRE than in PUB (0.51 ± 0.15 cm2 and 1.63 ± 0.48 cm2, respectively). There was a very slight significant relationship between UtS and LB (r = 0.19, p = 0.03) and a tendency towards TB (r = 0.15, p = 0.09). In conclusion, under the conditions of this study, BC, age and pubertal status did not have an effect on the efficacy of altrenogest or the reproductive performance of hyper-prolific gilts of Danish genetic origin, but uterine size may have had a positive effect. More recently, researchers and the industrial community have started researching DC appliances and DC microgrids as a means of increasing the end-to-end efficiency of systems. Given the fluctuating nature of renewable resources, energy storage becomes mandatory in powering households with minimal AC grid supply, and rechargeable battery packs with maximum power point tracking controllers with inverters are used. However, this approach is not the most efficient due to losses in the power converters used in the energy supply path, while short life and environmental concerns of battery storage also come into play. With the rapid development of commercial super-capacitors, with longer life, higher power density and wider operational temperature range, this device family can be at the center of a new development era, for power converters for DC homes and DC appliances. The new family of converters and protection systems known as supercapacitor-assisted techniques is a unique new approach to minimize or eliminate batteries while improving the ETEE. These new SCA techniques are based on a new theoretical concept now published as supercapacitor-assisted loss management theory. In this paper, we will demonstrate how we extend SCALoM theory to develop SCA converters for whiteware, with the example of a DC-converted commercial double-door refrigerator with implementation details. To be successful in a circular economy, it is important to keep the cost of operationalizing remanufacturing processes low in order to retain as much value of the product as possible. Optimizing operations for disassembly, as a key process step, is therefore an important prerequisite for economically viable circular manufacturing. The generation of fit-to-resource disassembly instructions is labor-intensive and challenging because (digital) product information is often lacking at End-of-Life. With upcoming EU regulations for Eco-design for Sustainable Products in mind, including the future use of Digital Product Passports, it is time to think about standardized methods to capture disassembly information for products. First requirements from small and medium-sized remanufacturing companies have been collected and compared with available frameworks for modeling product topology, parameters, and (dis)assembly process rationale. Based on this, the disassembly hypergraph is presented as a concept for recording ‘resource-agnostic disassembly guides’ in (machine-readable) product models to determine required disassembly actions and tools ‘smartly’. The concept builds upon existing models. Additionally, suitable methods for the collection of disassembly information are explored, resulting in preliminary insights from disassembly data collection workshops. Although the approach is promising, future work is needed to expand the concept of the disassembly hypergraph with both guidelines for setting up disassembly ontologies and further systematic disassembly knowledge extraction in order to apply this as a useful means for companies to rationalize their disassembly operations. The growing accumulation of solid waste from consumerism and the traditional linear economy poses significant risks to environmental sustainability and human health, increasing pressure on manufacturers to design more recyclable products. Design for Recycling (DfR), a key subset of Design for X (DfX), offers a promising strategy to enhance product recyclability. However, its implementation is hindered by ambiguous definitions, insufficient data, and a lack of robust methodologies and tools. This review clarifies the concept of DfR in engineering, identifies three critical research gaps, and proposes future research directions based on 89 papers: (1) the development of a comprehensive DfR knowledge base, (2) the creation of standardized recyclability evaluation indicators, and (3) the establishment of an automated, data-driven design generation system. These advancements aim to support the automated creation of highly recyclable products by leveraging accurate data, precise evaluations and minimized human bias. This review not only highlights existing research gaps but also provides valuable insights to guide future DfR studies and the development of more effective tools and methods. Furthermore, it emphasizes that the successful implementation of DfR requires active participation and commitment from the entire industrial chain and society. Full article

Background: Advances in diagnosis and treatment have significantly increased survival rates for childhood cancer, leading to a growing population of long-term survivors. However, these survivors face substantial physical and psychological sequelae that affect both the child and their family. We developed the RECOVER model of care to support childhood cancer survivors as they transition from the end of their planned treatment to survivorship, addressing the broader health and wellness needs beyond medical surveillance. The primary objectives are to assess the feasibility and acceptability of the RECOVER model of care in routine paediatric oncology practice. Secondary objectives include evaluating preliminary efficacy outcomes and identifying factors that influence the successful adoption and integration of the model. Methods: The study comprises a Type 2 Hybrid Implementation/Effectiveness non-randomised controlled trial to compare historical and prospective data. Quantitative data will assess feasibility, reach, effectiveness, adoption, maintenance, and implementation. The qualitative component will assess end-user acceptability and appropriateness through focus groups, surveys, and interviews. Quantitative and qualitative results will be integrated during the interpretation phase to provide complementary insights into the interconnected contextual factors that facilitate the model uptake. Discussion: The RECOVER model of care aims to offer a robust approach to survivorship care, facilitating the continuous monitoring and management of long-term and late effects in childhood cancer survivors. This model has the potential to significantly improve the quality of life and health outcomes for this vulnerable population by addressing their comprehensive needs in a timely and systematic manner. Perioperative Intensive Smoking Cessation Intervention Among Smokers Who Underwent Transurethral Resection of Bladder Tumor (TURBT) in Two Different Settings: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Background/Objective: Smoking is an individual risk factor for bladder cancer. Many patients are still smoking at the time of their diagnosis, yet few trials have examined smoking cessation interventions (SCIs) in relation to transurethral resection of the bladder tumor (TURBT). This study therefore aimed to compare the efficacy of a hospital-based 6-week intensive SCI with standard treatment among this patient group. Methods: A parallel-arm randomized controlled trial was conducted from December 2021 to March 2024 at two university hospital urology departments in Denmark. A total of 38 daily smokers undergoing TURBT were allocated to the hospital-based intensive SCI, including weekly meetings, patient education, motivational support, and complimentary nicotine replacement therapy or the standard treatment with very brief advice and referral to the same intensive SCI at a municipality clinic. The primary outcome was smoking cessation at the end of the intervention, assessed through participant interviews. The secondary outcomes included continuous abstinence at three and six months, quality of life, and frailty. Analyses were performed as intention-to-treat. Results: After six weeks, 37% in the hospital-based group and 6% in the standard group achieved smoking cessation (p = 0.042). At three and six months the quit rates were, 37% and 26% in the hospital-based group, compared to 0% and 0% in the standard group, respectively. No significant differences in quality of life or frailty were found. Conclusions: This trial found that hospital-based intensive SCI increased cessation rates compared to standard treatment. It would be valuable to evaluate the impact on postoperative complications, cancer prognosis, and long-term cessation in a sizeable new study. Full article

Batteries are essential for the functionality of electric vehicles (EVs), leading to their design with enhanced performance and durability. Consequently, traction batteries are often replaced while they still retain the properties for use in less stressful demanding applications, with lower power and storage requirements. This serves as a notable opportunity for circular economy. The energy management system presented is designed with lithium-ion batteries coming from EVs and repurposed for electricity storage as a smart backup solution for buildings. The system buys and stores energy from the grid during low-cost periods and utilizes the stored electricity to feed the demand, avoiding high electricity prices and smoothing out peak consumptions exceeding a predefined power limit. To illustrate the proposal, a case study is presented based on the Spanish market, analyzing the impact on the electricity savings for end consumers as well as the extended second-life estimation for a pack of batteries. The analysis of the results will help assess if the system is both economically feasible and environmentally sustainable from a circular economy point of view. Full article

During shale gas field production, wellhead throttle valves are prone to erosion caused by solid particles carried in the gas stream, posing significant safety risks. Existing studies on erosion primarily focus on simple structure like elbows and tees, while research on gas–solid two-phase flow erosion in needle throttle valves remains limited. This paper establishes a numerical model based on the CFD-DPM approach, integrating actual shale gas field production conditions to investigate the erosion behavior of needle throttle valves under varying openings, particle sizes, inlet velocities, and particle mass flow rates. The results show that the valve spool consistently exhibits the highest erosion rate among all components, with the most severe erosion localized at its front end. At a 1/4 opening, particles colliding with the spool exhibit significantly increased frequency and energy when re-entering the upstream pipeline, raising the risk of blockages. Furthermore, when the opening exceeds 2/4, the valve chamber experiences higher erosion rates than the upstream and downstream pipelines. This study provides critical insights for optimizing valve design and maintenance strategies, thereby enhancing service life and ensuring safe shale gas production. Full article

Background: Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is the major cause of blindness in children. It is a biphasic disease with retinal vessel growth cessation and loss (Phase I) followed by uncontrolled retinal vessel growth (Phase II). Folate is an essential nutrient for fetal development and growth. Premature infants have a high risk for folate deficiency. However, the contribution of folate to ROP risk remains unknown. Methods: In mouse oxygen-induced retinopathy (OIR), the nursing dams were fed with a folic acid-deficient or control diet after delivery until the end of hyperoxia. Alternatively, pups received direct injection of either folic acid or vehicle during Phase I hyperoxia. Genes involved in the folate cycle and angiogenic responses were examined using real-time PCR. Total retinal folate levels were measured with the Lactobacillus casei assay. Results: Maternal folic acid deficiency in early life exacerbated pathological retinal vessel growth, while supplementation with folic acid suppressed it. Genes involved in the folate cycle were downregulated in Phase I OIR retinas and were highly expressed in Müller glia. Folic acid reduced pro-angiogenic signaling in cultured rat retinal Müller glia in vitro. Conclusions: Appropriate supplementation of folic acid might be a new and safe treatment for ROP at an early stage. Full article

Pumpkin (P) production in Santiago del Estero, Argentina, is of high quality. The product is sold whole and fresh, and is traditionally consumed after being cooked in water. Due to its pleasant flavor (semi-sweet), it is widely accepted among consumers, being a potentially versatile product to be consumed fresh or minimally processed (MP). Processing increases food’s susceptibility to microbial spoilage, making it necessary to use sanitizers. In this work, the effect of different application methodologies at different concentrations of rosemary essential oil (REO) on the sensory characteristics and microbiological quality of grated P was evaluated. The product was washed, sanitized, cut, peeled, grated and centrifuged, and then REO was superficially incorporated in two concentrations (4 and 8 μL/mL), applied in three ways: sprayed (TA), immersion (TI) and by strips embedded in EO being adhered to the storage container (TV). The product was subsequently stored at 5 °C in sealed polypropylene bags of 35 μm. In addition, an immersion treatment with NaClO-100 ppm-3 min and a control without any additive were included. Samples were taken at 24 h and 8 days of storage, evaluating mesophilic aerobic microorganisms (MA), psychrophilic (Psy), enterobacteria (E) and mold and yeasts (MY). Sensory evaluation was carried out by trained judges, determining that aroma and flavor were the critical attributes for acceptability. At the end of storage, microbiological analysis showed that REO treatments presented levels of 107 CFU/g, similar to NaCLO treatment, except TI with both concentrations, which was more effective in inhibiting the development of Psy and MY. Regarding aroma evaluation, at 8 days all treatments were acceptable, with the exception of TI and TV (8 μL/mL), while for flavor all treatments were acceptable with the exception of TI for both concentrations. Therefore, the application of TA and TV treatments at the lowest concentration could be considered for further studies to increase the shelf life of MP P. Full article

Heart transplantation has significantly improved survival and enhanced the quality of life of patients with end-stage heart failure. Successful long-term outcomes are predicated on a collaborative effort among patients, transplant teams, and primary care providers (PCPs). Notably, PCPs are increasingly pivotal in post-transplant care, engaging in annual assessments, early recognition of complications, and referral, thus minimizing morbidity and mortality. This article highlights key considerations for PCPs, including indications for heart transplant, immunosuppressive therapy and infection prophylaxis, management of post-transplant complications, psychosocial and lifestyle adjustment, and family planning. This roadmap aims to empower PCPs to deliver optimal care and improve long-term outcomes for heart transplant recipients. Full article

Liver transplantation is a critical and evolving field in modern medicine, offering life-saving treatment for patients with end-stage liver disease and other hepatic conditions. Despite its transformative potential, transplantation faces persistent challenges, including a global organ shortage, increasing liver disease prevalence, and significant waitlist mortality rates. Current donor evaluation practices often discard potentially viable livers, underscoring the need for refined graft assessment tools. This review explores advancements in graft evaluation and utilization aimed at expanding the donor pool and optimizing outcomes. Emerging technologies, such as imaging techniques, dynamic functional tests, and biomarkers, are increasingly critical for donor assessment, especially for marginal grafts. Machine learning and artificial intelligence, exemplified by tools like LiverColor, promise to revolutionize donor-recipient matching and liver viability predictions, while bioengineered liver grafts offer a future solution to the organ shortage. Advances in perfusion techniques are improving graft preservation and function, particularly for donation after circulatory death (DCD) grafts. While challenges remain—such as graft rejection, ischemia-reperfusion injury, and recurrence of liver disease—technological and procedural advancements are driving significant improvements in graft allocation, preservation, and post-transplant outcomes. This review highlights the transformative potential of integrating modern technologies and multidisciplinary approaches to expand the donor pool and improve equity and survival rates in liver transplantation. This research article outlines our aim to perform topology optimization (TO) by reducing the mass of the connecting rod of an internal combustion engine based on static structural and dynamic analyses. The basic components of an internal combustion engine like the connecting rods, pistons, crankshaft, and cylinder liners were designed using Autodesk Inventor Professional 2025. Using topology optimization, we aimed to achieve lesser maximum von Mises stress during static structural analysis and maintain a factor of safety (FOS) above 2.5 during rigid body dynamics. A force of 64,500 N was applied at the small end of the connecting rod while the big end was fixed. Topology optimization was carried out using ANSYS Discovery software at various percentages on a trial-and-error basis to determine better topology with lesser maximum von Mises stress. Target reduction was set to 4%, and as a result, 5.66% mass reduction from the original design and 6.25% reduced maximum von Mises stress was achieved. Later, transient analysis was carried out to evaluate the irregular motion loads and moments acting on the connecting rod at 1000 rpm. The results showed that the FOS remained above 2.5. Finally, the optimized connecting rod was simulated and verified for longevity using Goodman fatigue life analysis. Full article

Clinical Evidence of the Use of Mepolizumab in the Treatment of Chronic Rhinosinusitis with Nasal Polyps: A Prospective Observational Study

Background/Objectives: Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) poses significant therapeutic challenges. The introduction of Mepolizumab, an anti-interleukin-5 monoclonal antibody, offers a new therapeutic option for patients with severe, uncontrolled CRSwNP. This prospective observational study aims to assess the efficacy and safety of Mepolizumab for treating severe CRSwNP in Italy. Methods: A single-center prospective observational study conducted in real-life settings with the patients of our center. Prior to enrollment, each patient underwent an interdisciplinary evaluation involving a pulmonologist and an allergologist if deemed necessary. All patients who were referred for treatment with Mepolizumab in compliance with the AIFA guidelines and the EPOS/EUFOREA update were included in the study population: (1) subjects who were over the age of 18, (2) who had severe CRSwNP, (3) whose condition was not successfully managed with standard therapies alone, and (4) whose blood eosinophil counts were greater than 150 cells/mL. Mepolizumab was administered subcutaneously through a 100 mg injection once every four weeks in addition to the standard-of-care therapy. Results: At the end of the enrollment process, 20 patients with severe CRSwNP were enrolled. Significant improvements were observed in Nasal Polyp Score, quality of life (SNOT-22; p < 0.05), and nasal obstruction and rhinorrhea (p < 0.05), while no significant improvements were seen in olfactory function (p < 0.05). Eosinophil levels also significantly decreased (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Mepolizumab effectively manages severe CRSwNP, showing improvements in symptom control and quality of life with an acceptable safety profile. Full article

The Chinese red pine, Pinus tabulaeformis, is one of the most important evergreen conifer trees in China. It is widely planted in southern Gansu Province and is commonly used for garden trees, hedges, windbreaks, and soil and water conservation. However, Matsucoccus sinensis, a scale insect, has become a major pest of the P. tabulaeformis forests, and its life history and biological characteristics remain unknown. In this study, we investigated the biological characteristics, male cocoon emergence, adult mating period, and egg developmental period of M. sinensis, providing valuable insights for its prevention and control. We conducted continuous observation of the different developmental stages of M. sinensis, both in the laboratory and in P. tabulaeformis fields. The least squares method was used to calculate the egg developmental period of M. sinensis. Our results showed that the scale insect is a monophagous species with one generation occurring per year. The second-instar nymphs overwinter on the needles in the medium shell and reproduce sexually, without parthenogenesis. Male M. sinensis adults reach their peak appearance at the end of April in the study region. The peak emergence of male cocoons occurred between 2:00 AM and 4:00 AM, and the adult mating period lasted from 11:00 AM to 13:00 PM. The larvae of M. sinensis attack the needles of P. tabulaeformis. The nymphs crawled and moved to the inner base of the needles, with first- to third-instar nymphs fixing themselves to the needles to feed. The effective accumulated temperature and starting temperatures for the development of M. sinensis eggs were found to be 86.1 °C and 3.5 °C, respectively. Overall, understanding the biology and life history of M. sinensis is essential for identifying key developmental stages and determining the optimal timing for pest control, ultimately aiding in the development of targeted management strategies to protect P. tabulaeformis forests from this emerging pest.
