Acne, a commonly treated skin disease, requires control of one’s daily routine for an optimal outcome. As skincare products continue to advance, and with the introduction of dermocosmetics (active cosmetics, functional cosmetics, cosmeceuticals), it is necessary for clinicians to stay updated and give professional guidance. Following a literature review, a panel discussed and, using an online review process, explored the available acne dermocosmetics and convened to develop consensus statements on acne skincare incorporating patient- and treatment-related factors. Recommendations tailored to several distinct patient subgroups, namely, preadolescent acne, adolescent/adult acne, acne with comorbid atopic dermatitis, acne in pregnancy, drug-induced acne, and acne cosmetica, were generated to maximize the use of dermocosmetics in acne management. In adolescent and adult acne, products with active ingredients that mark key aspects of acne pathophysiology are called for; in atopics, agents which protect and restore the skin barrier are primarily considered; and in the preadolescent age group and pregnant and lactating women, the use of acne dermocosmetics should be prioritized as there are limited treatment options. While skincare alone is often sufficient for mild acne and for maintenance, adjunctive skincare can enhance treatment efficacy as well as patient adherence in various settings. This guideline seeks to offer insights into acne dermocosmetics and provide skincare recommendation tailored to Asian patient subgroups. Full article

Background and Objectives: Clozapine is a highly effective antipsychotic used for treating treatment-refractory psychotic and mood disorders. However, clozapine also has a serious risk of side effects leading to mortality, particularly its potentiated risk of leading to pneumonia. This review aims to overview the demographic and health-related risk factors leading to pneumonia to better inform risk assessment for clozapine users and to summarise current theories on the mechanisms for clozapine-associated pneumonia. This paper will highlight the need to prioritise pneumococcal vaccination in this population group. Materials and Method: We conducted a literary search of five online databases conforming to PRISMA. Our review includes all peer-reviewed papers with original data that discuss clozapine and pneumonia and excludes case reports. Baseline information of participants, pneumonia-related information and information regarding risk factors and mechanisms causing pneumonia were also extracted. Results: Clozapine was found to have an increased risk of pneumonia compared to other antipsychotic medications. Factors included comorbidities, higher clozapine dosages, and concurrent use of other antipsychotic medications. Key mechanisms for clozapine-associated pneumonia include clozapine-induced hyper sedation, sialorrhea and neutropoenia. Conclusions: While clozapine improves overall mortality for patients, our review confirms clozapine has the highest risk of pneumonia of all antipsychotics. The review also highlights the prevalent underuse of pneumococcal vaccines among clozapine users and the urgent need to increase uptake. Full article

In post-mortem (PM) investigations, forensic toxicologists attempt to identify legal or illegal substances present before death and determine how they contributed to the cause of death. A critical challenge is ensuring that PM sample concentrations accurately reflect those at the time of death, as postmortem redistribution (PMR) can alter these levels due to anatomical and physiological changes. The PMR phenomenon is called a ‘toxicological nightmare’. PMR significantly affects post-mortem drug concentrations, particularly for lipophilic drugs and those with a high volume of distribution. The emergence of new psychoactive substances (NPSs) has led to a growing recognition of their role as a significant public health concern, frequently associated with fatalities related to polydrug use. These substances are renowned for their ability to induce intoxication at low doses, which has led to the continuous updating of toxicological and forensic methods to improve detection and adopt new analytical standards. The comprehensive detection of NPS metabolites, some of which are still undiscovered, presents an additional analytical challenge, as do their metabolic pathways. This complicates their identification in fatal cases using standard analytical methods, potentially leading to an underestimation of their actual prevalence in toxicological results. Furthermore, the interpretation of analytical results is hindered by the absence of data on PM blood levels and the specific contributions of NPS to causes of death, exacerbated by the lack of knowledge of whether the PMR phenomenon influences them. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the literature on post-mortem cases involving various NPS, categorized according to classifications by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the European Union Drugs Agency (EUDA). These categories include cathinones, phenylethylamines, arylalkylamines, phencyclidine-type substances, phenmetrazines, piperazines, phenidates, aminoindanes, LSD-like NPSs, tryptamines, fentanyl analogs, designer benzodiazepines, synthetic cannabinoids, and nitazenes. This review covers not only postmortem blood levels but also the stability of the substances studied, the methods of analysis, and attempts to shed some light on the PMR phenomenon. This review used various key terms, such as PMR, NPS, and the names of previously categorized substances and drug analyses across multiple peer-reviewed journals and databases, including Scopus, Google Schoolar, Springer, PubMed, and Wiley Online Library. In addition, references from retrieved articles were examined to identify additional relevant research. Interpreting post-mortem toxicological results is complex and lacks definitive guidelines, requiring a nuanced understanding of its challenges and potential pitfalls. As a result, post-mortem toxicology is often regarded as an art. The primary aim of this review is to provide forensic toxicologists with a comprehensive framework to assist in the evaluation and interpretation of NPS analysis. This guide is intended to complement the existing knowledge and practices applied in forensic laboratories within the toxicological analysis of post-mortem cases. Full article

Background and Objectives: Meditation and mindfulness, rooted in ancient traditions, enhance mental well-being by cultivating awareness and emotional control. It has been shown to induce neuroplasticity, increase cortical thickness, reduce amygdala reactivity, and improve brain connectivity and neurotransmitter levels, leading to improved emotional regulation, cognitive function, and stress resilience. This systematic review will synthesize research on neurobiological changes associated with mindfulness and meditation practices. Materials and Methods: Studies were identified from an online search of PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Embase databases without any search time range. This review has been registered on Open OSF (n) GV2JY. Results: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) enhances brain regions related to emotional processing and sensory perception, improves psychological outcomes like anxiety and depression, and exhibits unique mechanisms of pain reduction compared to placebo. Conclusions: This review highlights that mindfulness, particularly through MBSR, improves emotional regulation and brain structure, reduces anxiety, and enhances stress resilience. Future research should focus on diverse populations and naturalistic settings to better understand and optimize these benefits. Full article

(1) Background: Microbiota could be related to tumorigenesis through the persistence of an inflammatory state, also at the endometrial level. Inflammation, in fact, is involved in the promotion of genetic instability and in a favorable microenvironment for tumor growth. One pathway could be the disruption of the epithelial/mucosal barrier, with the activation of cytokines. The microbiota also seem to favor other involved patterns, such as insulin resistance and increased adipose tissue. (2) Methods: The online search for this review was based on keywords such as “endometrial cancer” and “microbiota” on the main online scientific database. Our objective is a narrative up-to-date review of the current literature on gynecological microbiota; we analyze the possible correlations with known modifying and promoting oncological factors (i.e., Body Mass Index- BMI, menopause, pH), with particular attention to vaginal and uterine microorganisms respective to the development of endometrial cancer in comparison to healthy women. (3) Results: Various species and distributions of bacteria could be related to tumorigenesis and induce alterations in cell signaling and cycle pathways, including those in the gynecological field. (4) Conclusions: In the literature, the different composition of uterine and vaginal microbiota has been analyzed in the past years, and their diversity and actions seem to correlate with possible oncological effects. Background: With a significant increase in both incidence and mortality, oral cancer—particularly oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC)—is one of the main causes of death in developing countries. Even though there is evidence of advances in surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy, the overall survival rate for patients with OSCC has improved, but by a small percentage. This may be due, on the one hand, to the fact that the disease is diagnosed when it is at a too-advanced stage, when metastases are already present. Methods: This review explores the therapeutic potential of natural herbal products and their use as adjuvant therapies in the treatment of oral cancer from online sources in databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Google Scholar, Research Gate, Scopus, Elsevier). Results: Even if classic therapies are known to be effective, they often produce many serious side effects and can create resistance. Certain natural plant compounds may offer a complementary approach by inducing apoptosis, suppressing tumor growth, and improving chemotherapy effectiveness. The integration of these compounds with conventional treatments to obtain remarkable synergistic effects represents a major point of interest to many authors. This review highlights the study of molecular mechanisms and their efficiency in in vitro and in vivo models, as well as the strategic ways in which drugs can be administered to optimize their use in real contexts. Conclusions: This review may have a significant impact on the oncology community, creating new inspirations for the development of more effective, safer cancer therapies with less toxic potential. The aim of this review is to provide experimental evidence for the programmed-death activity of Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) in the anti-cancer therapy of breast cancer. The literature search was conducted using online electronic databases (Google Scholar, PubMed, Scopus). Collection schedule data for the review article covered the years 2004–2024. Ashwagandha active substances, especially Withaferin A (WA), are the most promising anti-cancer compounds. WS exerts its effect on breast cancer cells by inducing programmed cell death, especially apoptosis, at the molecular level. Ashwagandha has been found to possess a potential for treating breast cancer, especially estrogen receptor/progesterone receptor (ER/PR)-positive and triple-negative breast cancer. Full article

The many limitations of implementing anticancer strategies under the term “precision oncology” have been extensively discussed. While some authors propose promising future directions, others are less optimistic and use phrases such as illusion, hype, and false hypotheses. The reality is revealed by practicing clinicians and cancer patients in various online publications, one of which has stated that “in the quest for the next cancer cure, few researchers bother to look back at the graveyard of failed medicines to figure out what went wrong”. The message is clear: Novel therapeutic strategies with catchy names (e.g., synthetic “lethality”) have not fulfilled their promises despite decades of extensive research and clinical trials. The main purpose of this review is to discuss key challenges in solid tumor therapy that surprisingly continue to be overlooked by the Nomenclature Committee on Cell Death (NCCD) and numerous other authors. These challenges include: The impact of chemotherapy-induced genome chaos (e.g., multinucleation) on resistance and relapse, oncogenic function of caspase 3, cancer cell anastasis (recovery from late stages of apoptosis), and pitfalls of ubiquitously used preclinical chemosensitivity assays (e.g., cell “viability” and tumor growth delay studies in live animals) that score such pro-survival responses as “lethal” events. The studies outlined herein underscore the need for new directions in the management of solid tumors. Full article

Aim: The objective of this study was to explore the effects of fixed orthodontic appliances on enamel structure by assessing microfractures, surface roughness, and alterations in color. Methods: This review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. A systematic search of online databases was conducted using the keywords ‘enamel’ AND ‘orthodontic debonding’. Eligibility criteria included both in vivo and ex vivo clinical trials conducted on human teeth. Results and Discussion: A total of 14 relevant papers were analyzed. Various instruments and techniques were utilized across different studies to assess surface roughness, color change, and surface fractures. Conclusions: The findings of this study suggest that ceramic brackets may lead to an increase in enamel fractures, particularly during bracket removal. The surface roughness of enamel exhibits variability depending on the adhesive substance and polishing methods used post-removal. Fixed orthodontic appliances could induce changes in enamel color, which may be alleviated by the use of nano-hydroxyapatite or specific polishing techniques. Further research is necessary to identify effective strategies for managing these color changes and improving the overall outcomes of fixed orthodontic treatment. Full article

Soil degradation threatens global food security and environmental sustainability, necessitating effective soil management strategies. This review comprehensively examines the impact of organic soil amendments on soil quality and productivity across various soil types and climatic conditions. A review of significant research related to organic amendments was performed using encompassed data from online search engines for studies published up until 31 December 2023. Despite their heterogeneity and use of varying methodologies, the data were narratively synthesized, providing a comprehensive understanding of amendment-induced changes in the chemical and physical properties of soil and the effectiveness of restoration on soil degradation. Organic amendments, including compost, vermicompost, biochar, and pomace, are pivotal in enhancing soil quality by increasing soil organic matter content, fostering aggregate formation, and improving soil structure in the short term. They positively influence water retention capacity, pH levels, nutrient availability, and carbon sequestration. In several studies, amendment-induced changes were absent, indicating that the effects of amendments vary depending on soil texture, application rates, and cropping systems, which emphasizes the need for tailored, sustainable soil management practices. This study concludes that organic amendments are a promising option for structure improvement and organic matter accumulation. It further suggests that an approach that integrates various methods is essential in order to meet desirable soil quality and retain agricultural productivity and offers valuable insights and recommendations for policymakers, practitioners, and researchers. Organic amendments can improve soil ecosystem services and contribute to climate change adaptation. In the future, more attention should be directed to tillage management and soil amendment interaction, as well as their effectiveness over specific periods of time. Full article

Evidence about bone health in people affected by psychiatric disorders is limited. This narrative review aims to highlight what is known, up to the present time, about clinical connections between bone health and psychiatric disorders, particularly depressive disorders (DD) and bipolar disorders (BD), in terms of common biological pathways. Besides inflammation, we focused on two molecules of growing interest: neuropeptide Y (NPY) and the neuro-hormone melatonin. Also, the role of psychoactive drugs on bone tissue was explored. For the preparation of this narrative review, the scientific literature of the most recent 7 years from PubMed, Springer Nature, Science Direct (Elsevier), Wiley Online, ResearchGate, and Google Scholar databases was analyzed. Reviewed evidence reveals that people diagnosed with BD or DD have an increased risk of both fractures and osteoporosis; NPY reduces bone loss induced by longer periods of depression and “buffers” psychological stress effects on bone health. MLT shows beneficial effects in osteoporosis and bone healing. Lithium, a mood stabilizer, shows potential bone-protective activity, while antipsychotic and antidepressant treatments may increase the risk of bone tissue damage, though further investigation is needed. Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) has evolved considerably in recent years, particularly the application of portable devices for the elemental analysis of solids in the field. However, aqueous analysis using LIBS instruments, either in the laboratory or in the field, is rather rare, despite extensive research on the topic since 1984. Thus, our comprehensive review aims to provide a clear overview of this research to offer guidance to new users. To achieve this, we examined the literature published between 1984 and 2023, comparing various settings and parameters in a database. There are four different categories of LIBS instruments: laboratory-based, online, portable, and telescopic. Additionally, there are four main categories of sample preparation techniques: liquid bulk, liquid-to-solid conversion, liquid-to-aerosol conversion, and hydride generation. Various experimental setups are also in use, such as double-pulse. Moreover, different acquisition settings significantly influence the sensitivity and therefore the detection limits. Documentation of the different methods of sample preparation and experimental settings, along with their main advantages and disadvantages, can help new users make an informed choice for a particular desired application. In addition, the presentation of median detection limits per element in a periodic table of elements highlights possible research gaps and future research opportunities by showing which elements are rarely or not analysed and for which new approaches in sample preparation are required to lower the detection limits. Online reviews are an important part of product information and have important effects on consumers’ purchasing decisions. Some sellers try to manipulate the market by inducing online reviews. In this study, a signal game model based on Bayesian conditional probability is constructed to analyze the preconditions, decision-making process, and effect on market demand and profit of this behavior. The results show that first, when consumer sensitivity to rebates reaches a certain threshold, low-quality sellers will adopt a conditional rebate strategy to induce consumers to give positive reviews. Second, the optimal rebate cost (β*) is obtained, where β* increases with the product price (p), but it is not necessarily monotonic in consumers’ sensitivity to rebates (ρ) or the proportion of high-quality products (α). Third, the conditional rebate strategy can only work in a market dominated by low-quality goods. Using the conditional rebate strategy in a market dominated by high-quality goods will not bring benefits to low-quality sellers but will harm their profits. This study proposes that some developing online markets have collusive behaviors owing to a lack of regulations and laws, as well as consumers’ concern for small interests. Ensuring the orderly development of online markets will require joint efforts by platform enterprises, government agencies, and consumers. Full article

Background: Pain can have a serious impact on a patient’s physical, mental, and social health, often causing their quality of life to decline. Various nicotine dosage forms, such as nicotine patches and nasal spray, have been developed and used as analgesics in clinical settings. However, there is controversy over the anti-nociceptive effects of nicotine among different clinical trials. The purpose of this meta-analysis is to quantify the analgesic effect of nicotine patches, nicotine nasal spray, and tobacco smoking on pain in humans. Methods: Relevant articles published in English prior to July 2023 were identified using the PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Embase online databases in accordance with PRISMA (2020) guidelines. Two reviewers independently screened and selected studies, extracted data, and assessed the quality of the included studies using version 2 of the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool for randomized trials (RoB 2). RStudio was used for data synthesis, heterogeneity assessment, sensitivity analysis, publication bias assessment, trim-and-fill analyses, and generating forest plots. Results: Sixteen eligible articles, including k = 5 studies of pain tolerance (n = 210), k = 5 studies of pain threshold (n = 210), and k = 12 studies of pain scores (N = 1249), were included for meta-analysis. Meta-analytic integration for pain threshold (Hedges’ g = 0.28, 95% CI = 0–0.55, Z = 1.99, p = 0.05) and pain tolerance (Hedges’ g = 0.32, 95% CI = 0.05–0.59, Z = 2.30, p = 0.02) revealed that nicotine administered via tobacco smoke generated acute analgesic effects to thermal stimuli. Meta-analytic integration for pain scores revealed that nicotine had a weak anti-nociceptive effect on postoperative pain of −0.37 (95% CI = −0.77 to 0.03, Z = −1.80) but with no statistical significance (p = 0.07). In addition, a limited number of included studies revealed that long-term smoking produced hyperalgesia that may be characterized as small to medium in magnitude (Hedges’ g = 0.37, 95% CI = 0.29–0.64, Z = 5.33, p < 0.01). Conclusion: These results help to clarify the mixed outcomes of trials and may ultimately inform the treatment of pain. We observed that acute nicotine administration prolonged the laboratory-induced pain threshold and tolerance time and may mildly relieve postoperative pain. In addition, long-term tobacco smoking may have a nociceptive effect on different types of chronic pain. More research is needed to determine the anti-nociceptive effects of nicotine in humans, and to understand the optimal timing, dose, and method of delivery of nicotine. Full article

Due to its high power, high efficiency, low pollution, and compact size, permanent-magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) have been widely used in a variety of fields, including electric vehicles, aerospace, wind turbines, and marine devices, which are used in renewable, sustainable, and environmentally friendly energy resources. However, in these practical scenarios, the motor operating conditions are complex and variable. Under high-temperature and high-current conditions, PMSMs may experience demagnetization failures, not only leading to performance degradation but also inducing unexpected failures of the motors. To reduce the risk of unexpected losses caused by demagnetization faults and improve the safety and reliability of motor systems, it is necessary to apply automated monitoring of the magnet flux of the motor’s permanent magnets and achieve real-time diagnosis of early demagnetization faults, ensuring the safe operation of the motor. This review article tries to summarize the current detection methods of the automated monitoring of demagnetization faults in PMSMs. The main online monitoring technologies from both practical and academic perspectives are summarized and their benefits and challenges are reviewed. Finally, the research trends and suggestions for future improvements are provided. This review article not only sheds light on the origins of the automated monitoring of demagnetization faults but also helps to design highly effective and sustainable permanent-magnet synchronous motors.
