Aerodynamics is a key factor in time-trial cycling. Over the years, various aspects have been investigated, including positioning, clothing, bicycle design, and helmet shape. The present study focuses on the development of a methodology for the aerodynamic optimization of a time-trial helmet through the implementation of a reduced-order model, alongside advanced simulation techniques, such as computational fluid dynamics, radial basis functions, mesh morphing, and response surface methodology. The implementation of a reduced-order model enhances the understanding of aerodynamic interactions compared to traditional optimization workflows reported in sports-related research, facilitating the identification of an optimal helmet shape during the design phase. The study offers practical insights for refining helmet design. Starting with a baseline teardrop profile, several morphing configurations are systematically tested, resulting in a 10% reduction in the drag force acting on the helmet. The reduced-order model also facilitates the analysis of turbulent flow patterns on the cyclist’s body, providing a detailed understanding of aerodynamic interactions. By leveraging reduced-order models and advanced simulation techniques, this study contributes to ongoing efforts to reduce the aerodynamic resistance of time-trial helmets, ultimately supporting the goal of improved athlete performance. In the realm of cardiac health research, accurate fluid dynamics simulations are vital for comprehending the heart function and diagnosing conditions. Central to these simulations is the precision of ventricular wall meshes used to model heart geometry. However, segmenting the wetted surface, particularly in the right ventricle (RV) with its significantly thinner parietal thickness compared to the left ventricle, presents challenges. This study focuses on qualitatively evaluating an automated reconstruction model for the RV’s outer wall using Radial Basis function (RBF) morphing. Two procedural criteria were compared, a random selection of control points and a curvature-based approach, which differ in terms of the identification of the control points of the RBF function. From these considerations, it emerges that a controlled use of the RBF function on the basis of the curvatures guarantees the greater controllability of the shape evolutions of the parietal structure of the RV, but it is more sensitive to any anomalies in the distribution of the vertices, as can be seen from the number of outliers, and its controllability is a function of the percentage of points chosen, exerting a greater impact on the required computational capacity. The definition of a strategic criterion for the selection of control points could represent a crucial aspect in the definition of an automatic reconstruction procedure of anatomical elements, which guarantees a morphological variability in line with the need to expand the pathological sample to be used for statistical formulations in the clinical field. Fatigue is a common issue in steel elements, leading to microstructural fractures and causing failure below the yield point of the material due to cyclic loading. High fatigue loads in steel building structures can cause brittle failure at the joints and supports, potentially leading to partial or total damage. The present study deals with accurate prediction of the fatigue life and stress intensity factor (SIF) of pre-cracked steel beams, which is crucial for ensuring their structural integrity and durability under cyclic loading. A computationally efficient adaptive meshing tool, known as Separative Morphing Adaptive Remeshing Technology (SMART), in ANSYS APDL is employed to create a reliable three-dimensional finite element model (FEM) that simulates fatigue crack growth with a stress ratio of “R = 0”. The objective of this research is to examine the feasibility of using a non-linear FE model with an adaptive meshing technique, SMART, to predict the crack growth, fatigue life, and SIF on pre-cracked steel beams strengthened with FRP. Through a comprehensive parametric analysis, the effects of different types of FRPs (carbon and glass) and fiber orientations (θ = 0° to 90°) on both the SIF and fatigue life are evaluated. The results reveal that the use of longitudinally oriented FRP (θ = 0°) significantly reduces the SIF, resulting in substantial improvements in the fatigue life of up to 15 times with CFRP and 4.5 times with GFRP. The results of this study demonstrate that FRP strengthening significantly extends the fatigue life of pre-cracked steel beams, and the developed FE model is a reliable tool for predicting crack growth, SIF, and fatigue life. This paper presents a CFD/CSD coupling method for aeroelastic simulation of folding tail morphing aircraft. The unsteady aerodynamic analysis is based on an in-house computational fluid dynamics (CFD) solver for the Euler equations, and emphasis is made on developing an efficient dynamic mesh method for the tail’s hybrid fold motion/elastic vibration deformation. The structural dynamic analysis is based on the computational structural dynamics (CSD) technique for solving the structural equation of motion in modal space. The aeroelastic coupling was achieved through successive iterations of CFD and CSD computations in the time domain. An adaptive multi-functional morphing aircraft allowing tail fold motion was selected to be studied. By using the developed method, aeroelastic simulation and mechanism analysis for fixed configurations at different folding angles and for variable configurations during the folding process were performed. The influence of folding rate on tail aeroelasticity and its influence mechanism were also analyzed. Full article

To accurately assess the dynamic stability of the damaged ship, this paper performs an experimental campaign and presents a feasible numerical method to analyze the effects of microscopic air–fluid interactions on the motion responses of the damaged ship. The numerical approach can be applied to solve the coupled hydrodynamic behavior between the flooding process and the motion responses of the damaged ship. The volume of fluid (VOF) method was applied to capture the interface of the free surface, while the dynamic fluid–body Interaction (DFBI) morphing technique was applied to deal with mesh adaption. In particular, the UDF (user-defined field) function was activated to realize the initial distribution of the free surface. Firstly, by comparing the experimental and numerical results, the reliability of visualizing the flooding process and dealing with the motion responses of the damaged ship was efficiently verified. The numerical flooding process was able to reproduce the hydrodynamic phenomenon well, including the flooding jet, interaction, and flow between adjacent compartments. The numerical roll motion curve of the damaged ship was consistent with that predicted in the model test, with an error in roll amplitude of no more than 4%. Secondly, based on the verified numerical method, it was seen from the results with different ventilation positions that not only the air compressibility due to varying levels of ventilation cannot be neglected in damage assessment, but also the position of the ventilation hole was crucial. This was because different positions will create different paths for the compressed air to overflow and affect air–fluid interactions. Thus, the flooding force and air-impacting force acting on the internal hull will be different. In conclusion, this paper introduces a new consideration in the damage assessment of ships. In this paper, an optimisation procedure is introduced that uses a significantly cheaper, and CFD-free, objective function for aerodynamic optimisation than conventional CFD-driven approaches. Despite the reduced computational cost, we show that this approach can still drive the optimisation scheme towards a design with a similar reduction in drag coefficient for wave drag-dominated problems. The approach used is ‘CFD-free’, i.e., it does not require any computational aerodynamic analysis. It can be applied to geometries discretised using meshes more conventionally used for ‘standard’ CFD-based optimisation approaches. The approach outlined in this paper makes use of the transonic area rule and its supersonic extension, exploiting a mesh-based parameterisation and mesh morphing methodology. The paper addresses the following question: ‘To what extent can an optimiser perform (wave) drag minimisation if using ‘area ruling’ alone as the objective (fitness) function measurement?’. A summary of the wave drag approximation in transonic and supersonic regimes is outlined along with the methodology for exploiting this theory on a typical CFD surface mesh to construct an objective function evaluation for a given geometry. The implementation is presented including notes on the considerations required to ensure stability, and error minimisation, of the numerical scheme. The paper concludes with the results from a number of (simple and complex geometry) examples of a drag-minimisation optimisation study and the results are compared with an approach using full-fidelity CFD simulation. The overall conclusions from this study suggest that the approach presented is capable of driving a geometry towards a similar shape to when using full-fidelity CFD at a significantly lower computational cost. However, it cannot account for any constraints, driven by other aerodynamic factors, that might be present within the problem. Full article

The treatment for asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease relies on forced inhalation of drug particles. Their distribution is essential for maximizing the outcomes. Patient-specific computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations can be used to optimize these therapies. In this regard, this study focuses on creating a parametric model of the human respiratory tract from which synthetic anatomies for particle deposition analysis through CFD simulation could be derived. A baseline geometry up to the fourth generation of bronchioles was extracted from a CT dataset. Radial basis function (RBF) mesh morphing acting on a dedicated tree structure was used to modify this baseline mesh, extracting 1000 synthetic anatomies. A total of 26 geometrical parameters affecting branch lengths, angles, and diameters were controlled. Morphed models underwent CFD simulations to analyze airflow and particle dynamics. Mesh morphing was crucial in generating high-quality computational grids, with 96% of the synthetic database being immediately suitable for accurate CFD simulations. Variations in wall shear stress, particle accretion rate, and turbulent kinetic energy across different anatomies highlighted the impact of the anatomical shape on drug delivery and deposition. The study successfully demonstrates the potential of tree-structure-based RBF mesh morphing in generating parametric airways for drug delivery studies. Full article

This paper proposes a CFD methodology for the simulation of the slipper’s dynamics of a swash-plate axial piston unit under actual operating conditions. The study considers a typical slipper design, including a vented groove at the swash-plate interface. The dynamic fluid–body interaction (DFBI) model is exploited to find the instantaneous position of the slipper, while the morphing approach is adopted to cope with the corresponding mesh distortion. A modular approach is adopted to ensure high-quality mesh on the entire slipper surface and sliding interfaces provide the fluid dynamic connection between neighboring regions. The external forces acting on the slipper are included by means of user-defined lookup tables with the simulation estimating the lift force induced by fluid compression. Moreover, the force produced by the metal-to-metal contact between the slipper and the swash plate is modeled through a specific tool of the software. The pressure signal over an entire revolution of the pump is taken as an input of the simulation and a variable time step is used to manage the high-pressure gradients occurring in the regions of inner and outer dead points of the piston. The weakly compressible characteristic of the fluid is considered by a specific pressure-dependent density approach, and the two-equation eddy-viscosity k-ω SST (shear stress transport) model is used to assess the turbulent behavior of the flow. Furthermore, the transitional model predicts the onset of transition, thus solving different equations depending on whether the flow enters a laminar or turbulent regime. In conclusion, the proposed methodology investigates the motion of the slipper in response to several external forces acting on the component. The numerical results are discussed in terms of variable clearance height, pressure distribution within the gap, and lift forces acting on the slipper under specific pump operations. Full article

In this paper, a numerical assessment of the effect of shallow water on the total resistance of the solar catamaran SolarCat is carried out using computational fluid dynamics within the software package STAR–CCM+. The unsteady viscous fluid flow was modelled based on the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) equations with the application of the kω SST (kω Shear Stress Transport) turbulence model. The RANS equations were discretized by the finite volume method, and the position of the free surface is determined by the volume of fluid method. In shallow water conditions, a mesh morphing algorithm is applied. Numerical simulations were carried out for the deep water and limited depths corresponding to h/T=7.6, h/T=4, and h/T=2 at two speeds. The verification study was carried out and the total numerical uncertainty was calculated for the total resistance and sinkage of the catamaran. A detailed analysis of the flow around the catamaran was carried out. Full article

Shape Transformation Approaches for Fluid Dynamic Optimization

The contribution is devoted to combined shape- and mesh-update strategies for parameter-free (CAD-free) shape optimization methods. Three different strategies to translate the shape sensitivities computed by adjoint shape optimization procedures into simultaneous updates of both the shape and the discretized domain are employed in combination with a mesh-morphing strategy. Considered methods involve a linear Steklov–Poincaré (Hilbert space) approach, a recently suggested highly non-linear p-Laplace (Banach space) method, and a hybrid variant which updates the shape in Hilbert space. The methods are scrutinized for optimizing the power loss of a two-dimensional bent duct flow using an unstructured, locally refined grid that initially displays favorable grid properties. Optimization results are compared with respect to the optimization convergence, the computational effort, and the preservation of the mesh quality during the optimization sequence. Results indicate that all methods reach, approximately, the same converged optimal solution, which reduces the objective function by about 18% for this classical benchmark example. However, as regards the preservation of the mesh quality, more advanced Banach space methods are advantageous in comparison to Hilbert space methods even when the shape update is performed in Hilbert space to save costs. In specific, while the computational cost of the Banach space method and the hybrid method is about 3.5 and 2.5 times the cost of the pure Hilbert space method, respectively, the grid quality metrics are 2 times and 1.7 times improved for the Banach space and hybrid method, respectively. The finite element method was used to investigate the effect of the stress ratio on fatigue crack propagation behavior within the framework of the linear elastic fracture mechanics theory. The numerical analysis was carried out using ANSYS Mechanical R19.2 with the unstructured mesh method-based separating, morphing, and adaptive remeshing technologies (SMART). Mixed mode fatigue simulations were performed on a modified four-point bending specimen with a non-central hole. A diverse set of stress ratios (R = 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, −0.1, −0.2, −0.3, −0.4, −0.5), including positive and negative values, is employed to examine the influence of the load ratio on the behavior of the fatigue crack propagation, with particular emphasis on negative R loadings that involve compressive excursions. A consistent decrease in the value of the equivalent stress intensity factor (ΔKeq) is observed as the stress ratio increases. The observation was made that the stress ratio significantly affects both the fatigue life and the distribution of von Mises stress. The results demonstrated a significant correlation between von Mises stress, ΔKeq, and fatigue life cycles. With an increase in the stress ratio, there was a significant decrease in the von Mises stress, accompanied by a rapid increase in the number of fatigue life cycles. The results obtained in this study have been validated by previously published literature on crack growth experiments and numerical simulations. Full article

Metallic wire mesh has gained attention as a potential material for lightweight aircraft structures, e.g., a metallic frame of morphing wings, due to its customizable mechanical properties associated with cell structures. However, the relationship between the pattern design of cell structures and the mechanical characteristics of metallic wire mesh remains unclear. The present work aims to investigate the mechanical behavior of asymmetric crosslinked metallic wire mesh with a hybrid Poisson’s ratio pattern, which has the potentials of arbitrary Poisson’s ratios. Two typical designs of cell arrangement for asymmetric crosslinked metallic wire mesh were proposed, namely negative Poisson’s ratio cells (NPRC) and positive Poisson’s ratio cells (PPRC). The in-plane Poisson’s ratio of asymmetric crosslinked metallic wire mesh was calculated based on the Euler beam theory. The effects of hybrid Poisson’s pattern and interwoven joint on mechanical properties, including macroscopic Poisson’s ratio and elastic bending recovery, were analyzed using numerical and experimental methods. The results demonstrate that the analytical Poisson’s ratio obtained from the proposed theoretical model agrees well with the simulation result. The hybrid structure which consisted of NPRC and PPRC could effectively control transverse shrinkage and become one of the most efficient potentials for promising structures with the arbitrary Poisson’s ratio phenomenon. The forecasted growth in dynamic global air fleet size in the coming decades, together with the need to introduce disruptive technologies supporting net-zero emission air transport, demands more efficient design and optimization workflows. This research focuses on developing an aerodynamic optimization framework suited for multi-objective studies of small aircraft engine air-intake ducts in multiple flight conditions. In addition to the refinement of the duct’s performance criteria, the work aims to improve the economic efficiency of the process. The optimization scheme combines the advantages of Kriging-based Efficient Global Optimization (EGO) with the Radial Basis Functions (RBF)-based mesh morphing technique and the Chebyshev-type Achievement Scalarizing Function (ASF) for handling multiple objectives and design points. The proposed framework is applied to an aerodynamic optimization study of an I-31T aircraft turboprop engine intake system. The workflow successfully reduces the air-duct pressure losses and mitigates the flow distortion at the engine compressor’s front face in three considered flight phases. The results prove the framework’s potential for solving complex multi-point air-intake duct problems and the capacity of the ASF-based formulation to guide optimization toward the designer’s preferred objective targets. Front wings are a key element in the aerodynamic performance of Formula 1 race cars. Thus, their optimisation makes an important contribution to the performance of cars in races. However, their design is constrained by regulation, which makes it more difficult to find good designs. The present work develops a hybrid shape optimisation approach to obtain an optimal five-element airfoil front wing under the FIA regulations and 17 design parameters. A first baseline design is obtained by parametric optimisation, on which the adjoint method is applied for shape optimisation via Mesh Morphing with Radial Basis Functions. The optimal front wing candidate obtained outperforms the parametric baseline up to a 25% at certain local positions. This shows that the proposed and tested hybrid approach can be a very efficient alternative. Although a direct 3D optimisation approach could be developed, the computational costs would be dramatically increased (possibly unaffordable for such a complex five-element front wing realistic shape with 17 design parameters and regulatory constraints). Thus, the present approach is of strong interest if the computational budget is low and/or a fast new front wing design is desired, which is a frequent scenario in Formula 1 race car design. This paper investigates the effect of the Dynamically Morphing Leading Edge (DMLE) on the flow structure and the behavior of dynamic stall vortices around a pitching UAS-S45 airfoil with the objective of controlling the dynamic stall. An unsteady parametrization framework was developed to model the time-varying motion of the leading edge. This scheme was then integrated within the Ansys-Fluent numerical solver by developing a User-Defined-Function (UDF), with the aim to dynamically deflect the airfoil boundaries, and to control the dynamic mesh used to morph and to further adapt it. The dynamic and sliding mesh techniques were used to simulate the unsteady flow around the sinusoidally pitching UAS-S45 airfoil. While the γReθ  turbulence model adequately captured the flow structures of dynamic airfoils associated with leading-edge vortex formations for a wide range of Reynolds numbers, two broader studies are here considered. Firstly, (i) an oscillating airfoil with the DMLE is investigated; the pitching-oscillation motion of an airfoil and its parameters are defined, such as the droop nose amplitude (AD) and the pitch angle at which the leading-edge morphing starts (MST). The effects of the AD and the MST on the aerodynamic performance was studied, and three different amplitude cases are considered. Secondly, (ii) the DMLE of an airfoil motion at stall angles of attack was investigated. In this case, the airfoil was set at stall angles of attack rather than oscillating it. This study will provide the transient lift and drag at different deflection frequencies of 0.5 Hz, 1 Hz, 2 Hz, 5 Hz, and 10 Hz. The results showed that the lift coefficient for the airfoil increased by 20.15%, while a 16.58% delay in the dynamic stall angle was obtained for an oscillating airfoil with DMLE with AD = 0.01 and MST = 14.75°, as compared to the reference airfoil. Similarly, the lift coefficients for two other cases, where AD = 0.05 and AD = 0.0075, increased by 10.67% and 11.46%, respectively, compared to the reference airfoil. Furthermore, it was shown that the downward deflection of the leading edge increased the stall angle of attack and the nose-down pitching moment. Finally, it was concluded that the new radius of curvature of the DMLE airfoil minimized the streamwise adverse pressure gradient and prevented significant flow separation by delaying the Dynamic Stall Vortex (DSV) occurrence.
