The successful 2020 launch and 2021 landing of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) Perseverance Mars rover initiated the first phase of the NASA and European Space Agency (ESA) Mars Sample Return (MSR) campaign. The goal of the MSR campaign is to collect scientifically interesting samples from the Martian surface and return them to Earth for further study in terrestrial laboratories. The MSR campaign consists of three major spacecraft components to accomplish this objective: the Perseverance Mars rover, the Sample Retrieval Lander (SRL) and the Earth Return Orbiter (ERO). Onboard the ERO spacecraft is the Capture, Containment and Return System (CCRS). CCRS will capture, process and return to Earth the samples that have been collected after they are launched into Mars orbit by the Mars Ascent Vehicle (MAV), which is delivered to Mars onboard the SRL. To facilitate the processing of the orbiting sample (OS) via the CCRS, we have designed and developed a vision system to determine the OS capture orientation. The vision system is composed of two cameras sensitive to the visible portion of the electromagnetic spectrum and two illumination modules constructed from broadband light emitting diodes (LED). Vision system laboratory tests and physics-based optical simulations predict CCRS ground processing will be able to correctly identify the OS post-capture orientation using only a single vision system image that is transmitted to Earth from Mars orbit. The transition process from fossil fuels to environmentally friendly renewable energy sources carries the risk of creating new environmental damages. Photovoltaic technology represents one of the alternatives with the least risk of harmful environmental impact. However, this technology has two important drawbacks: the significant land occupation for the installation of PV systems and the uncontrollability of production. By constructing floating photovoltaic plants on hydroelectric reservoirs, both of these problems can be reduced to an acceptable level. Some artificial reservoirs, originally built for hydroelectric power plants, have acquired a significant secondary function as recreational areas and fish breeding sites. Therefore, there is justified resistance from the local community to change the existing appearance and purpose of such reservoirs. This paper proposes a completely new concept of integrating the interests of the local community into such objects. In addition to preserving existing uses, the concept also offers new features. This can make the entire system environmentally friendly and sustainable. This paper details the technology behind the construction of floating photovoltaic power plants on artificial reservoirs and emphasizes their various advantages. These benefits include the non-utilization of cultivable land, the ease of assembly and construction, integration into existing power grids, and the potential to address electricity storage issues. For instance, Buško Lake, covering an area of 55.8 km2, may host 2.93 km2 of installed floating photovoltaic (FPV) facilities, enabling a total installed capacity of 240 MW. With an average of 5.5 h of daily sunshine, this totals 2007 annual hours, equivalent to a 55 MW thermal power plant. An analysis showed that, with losses of 18.2%, the average annual production stands at 302 GWh, translating to an annual production value of 18 million € at 60 €/MWh. The integration of this production into an existing hydroelectric power plant featuring an artificial reservoir might boost its output by 91%. The available transmission line capacity of 237 MW is shared between the hydroelectric power plant (HPP) and FPV; hence during the FPV maximum power generation time, the HPP halts its production. HPP Orlovac operates a small number of hours annually at full capacity (1489 h); therefore in combination with the FPV, this number can be increased to 2852 h. This integration maintains the lake’s functions in tourism and fishing while expanding its capabilities without environmental harm. Full article

Recent interest in the use of waxy starches in food production is due to the possibility of replacing chemically modified starches as texture-forming agents with native starch analogues. However, there is a lack of a coherent research comparing different varieties of commercially available waxy starches with respect to their molecular and functional properties. Therefore, the objective of this study was to compare native waxy starches from potatoes, corn, and rice, with particular attention to rheological characteristics in relation to molecular structure. The investigated potato, corn, and rice starch preparations were characterized by significantly different molecular properties due to both botanical origin of starch and variety. The molecular weights of waxy starches were significantly higher than those of their normal counterparts. This phenomenon was accompanied by a more loose conformation of the waxy starch macromolecule in solution. The presence of amylose confers the ability to coagulate starch sol into gel, resulting in substantial changes in the rheological properties of starch paste, and waxy starch pastes being characterized by more viscous flow and smoother texture. Hierarchical cluster analysis indicated that differences between functional properties are more notable for normal than for waxy preparations, in which potato starch, regardless of its variety, was characterized by the most unique characteristics. The present study deals with the reuse of agro-industrial waste with a specific focus on biochar (processed plant biomass or biochar) consisting of organic and inorganic waste biomass subjected to thermochemical processes. The objective of this work is to carry out a systematic review of the literature according to the Methodi Ordinatio methodology and select a bibliographic portfolio of high relevance to this study that makes it possible to present the concepts, applications and interest on the part of companies in including biochar in their processes, as well as addressing the environmental impacts linked to incorrect waste disposal. In this sense, biochar presents an interesting potential solution from both a waste management and environmental point of view. The current challenge is studies that prove economic viability. Single-Center Experience in Microsurgical Resection of Acoustic Neurinomas and the Benefit of Microscope-Based Augmented Reality

Background and Objectives: Microsurgical resection with intraoperative neuromonitoring is the gold standard for acoustic neurinomas (ANs) which are classified as T3 or T4 tumors according to the Hannover Classification. Microscope-based augmented reality (AR) can be beneficial in cerebellopontine angle and lateral skull base surgery, since these are small areas packed with anatomical structures and the use of this technology enables automatic 3D building of a model without the need for a surgeon to mentally perform this task of transferring 2D images seen on the microscope into imaginary 3D images, which then reduces the possibility of error and provides better orientation in the operative field. Materials and Methods: All patients who underwent surgery for resection of ANs in our department were included in this study. Clinical outcomes in terms of postoperative neurological deficits and complications were evaluated, as well as neuroradiological outcomes for tumor remnants and recurrence. Results: A total of 43 consecutive patients (25 female, median age 60.5 ± 16 years) who underwent resection of ANs via retrosigmoid osteoclastic craniotomy with the use of intraoperative neuromonitoring (22 right-sided, 14 giant tumors, 10 cystic, 7 with hydrocephalus) by a single surgeon were included in this study, with a median follow up of 41.2 ± 32.2 months. A total of 18 patients underwent subtotal resection, 1 patient partial resection and 24 patients gross total resection. A total of 27 patients underwent resection in sitting position and the rest in semi-sitting position. Out of 37 patients who had no facial nerve deficit prior to surgery, 19 patients were intact following surgery, 7 patients had House Brackmann (HB) Grade II paresis, 3 patients HB III, 7 patients HB IV and 1 patient HB V. Wound healing deficit with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak occurred in 8 patients (18.6%). Operative time was 317.3 ± 99 min. One patient which had recurrence and one further patient with partial resection underwent radiotherapy following surgery. A total of 16 patients (37.2%) underwent resection using fiducial-based navigation and microscope-based AR, all in sitting position. Segmented objects of interest in AR were the sigmoid and transverse sinus, tumor outline, cranial nerves (CN) VII, VIII and V, petrous vein, cochlea and semicircular canals and brain stem. Operative time and clinical outcome did not differ between the AR and the non-AR group. However, use of AR improved orientation in the operative field for craniotomy planning and microsurgical resection by identification of important neurovascular structures. Conclusions: The single-center experience of resection of ANs showed a high rate of gross total (GTR) and subtotal resection (STR) with low recurrence. Use of AR improves intraoperative orientation and facilitates craniotomy planning and AN resection through early improved identification of important anatomical relations to structures of the inner auditory canal, venous sinuses, petrous vein, brain stem and the course of cranial nerves. Background and Objectives: The focus on mild cognitive dysfunction in adults is of great interest, given the risk of worsening and conversion to dementia. Cognitive dysfunctions are characterized by a decrease in the weight and volume of the brain, due to cortical atrophy, with a widening of the grooves and flattening of the convolutions. Brain atrophy that mainly involves the hippocampus is related to the progression of cognitive impairment and the conversion from mild cognitive dysfunction to dementia. Currently, there is no treatment for MCI. Results from a trial on Alzheimer’s disease (ASCOMALVA trial) suggest that a sustained cholinergic challenge can slow the progression of brain atrophy typical of Alzheimer’s disease associated with vascular damage. This study intends to evaluate the efficacy of choline alphoscerate in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and associated vascular damage, in stabilizing and/or slowing brain atrophy typical of adult-onset cognitive dysfunction, and in improving and/or slowing the progression of cognitive and behavioral symptoms associated with MCI. Materials and Methods: This randomized controlled trial will recruit 60 patients that will be evaluated and randomized in a 1:1 ratio to receive choline alphoscerate (1200 mg/day) or placebo, for 12 months. Analyses will be carried out using SPSS vesion No 26 the Statistician in charge of this study, with the statistical significance level chosen as 0.05. Discussion: This trial may provide evidence about the efficacy of treatment with the cholinergic precursor choline alphoscerate in patients with mild cognitive dysfunction. The Impact of Football Teams’ Transportation on the Carbon Footprint for Away Matches

Problem: Participating in professional sport involves constant travel. From a review of the literature, the issue of transport in sport (passenger transport) in generating a carbon footprint has already been noted. A reliable assessment of the scale of this phenomenon is currently underway. The aim of this article is to assess the carbon footprint of transporting football players to away matches. It is complemented by a proposal to change the way matches are played using the Sports Centre concept. Methods: A systematic literature review was carried out in the theoretical part. The research part was conducted based on EN 16258 and the centre of gravity method. The objects of this study are five selected football clubs from the Polish Ekstraklasa, and their method of travel (by coach) to away matches. Results: The use of alternative (low-carbon) modes of transport reduces GHG levels from 13 per cent (Pogoń Szczecin) to 34 per cent (Jagiellonia Białystok). An interesting solution, although not yet adapted to the current times, is the implementation of the Sports Centre concept, which allows a 48 per cent reduction in the distance travelled (81,940 kgCO2e per year). Conclusions: Football clubs can neutralise their remaining carbon footprint through investments that indirectly contribute to total carbon neutrality, such as the planting of oxygen trees or the installation of a photovoltaic system to completely neutralise the carbon footprint. Recently, there has been growing interest in the use of summer cover crops that can be grown during summer fallow periods of crop rotation. This study evaluates the potential of sunn hemp (Crotalaria juncea L.), velvetbean [Mucuna pruriens (L.) DC.] and cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.]. as three annual legumes summer cover crops. The main objective of this review was to conduct global research comparing these summer cover crops to investigate the benefits, challenges, and trade-offs among ecosystems services when implementing these summer cover crops. In European agriculture, there are three main windows in crop rotation when these summer legumes can be grown: Around mid-spring after winter fallow, early summer after harvest of a winter crop, and mid- to late summer after harvest of an early-season crop. All three legumes can suppress weeds while they are actively growing. After termination, their mulch can create unfavorable conditions for weed emergence. Sunn hemp and velvetbean cover crops can cause a reduction in weed biomass of more than 50%. In addition to their ability to suppress weeds, sunn hemp, velvetbean, and cowpea provide a variety of ecosystem services, such as improving soil health, quality, and fertility, controlling pests, and sequestering carbon. The review highlights their promising role in weed suppression and their contribution to sustainable agricultural practices. However, further research is needed to evaluate their performance in weed management and their environmental impact in field trials under different soil-climatic conditions, as cover cropping is an effective practice but highly context-specific. Exploring the Composition of Egyptian Faience

Egyptian Faience, a revolutionary innovation in ancient ceramics, was used for crafting various objects, including amulets, vessels, ornaments, and funerary figurines, like shabtis. Despite extensive research, many aspects of ancient shabti production technology, chemistry and mineralogy remain relatively understudied from the 21st to the 22nd Dynasty, belonging to a recovered 19th-century private collection. The fragments’ origin is tentatively identified in the middle Nile valley in the Luxor area. Our study focused on a modest yet compositionally interesting small collection of shabti fragments to provide information on the glaze’s components and shabti’s core. We found that the core is a quartz and K-feldspars silt blended with an organic component made of plastic resins and vegetable fibres soaked with natron. The studied shabti figurines, after being modelled, dried, and covered with coloured glaze, were subjected to a firing process. Sodium metasilicate and sulphate compounds formed upon contact of the glaze with the silica matrix, forming a shell that holds together the fragile inner matrix. The pigments dissolved in the sodic glaze glass, produced by quartz, K-feldspars, and natron frit, are mainly manganese (Mn) and copper (Cu) compounds. The ratio Cu2O/CaO > 5 produces a blue colour; if <5, the glaze is green. In some cases, Mg and As may have been added to produce a darker brown and an intense blue, respectively. Reaction minerals provided information on the high-temperature firing process that rapidly vitrified the glaze. These data index minerals for the firing temperature of a sodic glaze, reaching up to a maximum of 1050 °C. Full article

Mycelium-based composites (MBCs) are biomaterials with scientifically proven potential to improve sustainability in construction. Although mycelium-based products are not entirely new, their use in engineering presents challenges due to the inherent properties of this fungal material. This study investigated professional architects’ and interior designers’ perceptions of MBCs, focusing on familiarity, aesthetic appeal, and willingness to use. The first phase of the survey explored respondents’ views on material-related ecological design principles. In the second phase, respondents evaluated ten small architectural objects crafted from MBCs, focusing on form, detail, and visual appeal. The last phase of the survey measured their interest in using mycelium in their design work. The results revealed that MBCs were relatively unknown among the surveyed professionals; only every second respondent knew this material. Despite this, 90% found MBCs visually appealing after seeing the examples. Interestingly, the natural, unprocessed appearance of the material was assessed as less aesthetically pleasing, with thermal treatment improving its perceived value. Architects were more receptive to using MBCs in their professional projects for customers than for personal use. This observation points to a ‘double standard’: professional architects are more open to using MBCs in projects not intended for their own use. Full article

Mechanisms for Producing Primordial Black Holes from Inflationary Models beyond Fine-Tuning

In this study, we present an analysis of the fine-tuning required in various inflationary models in order to explain the production of Primordial Black Holes (PBHs). We specifically examine the degree of fine-tuning necessary in two prominent single-field inflationary models: those with an inflection point and those with step-like features in the potential. Our findings indicate that models with step-like features generally require less fine-tuning compared to those with an inflection point, making them more viable for consistent PBH production. An interesting outcome of these models is that, in addition to improved fine-tuning, they may also predict low-frequency signals that can be detected by pulsar timing array (PTA) collaborations. Additionally, we extend our analysis to multifield inflationary models to assess whether the integration of additional fields can further alleviate the fine-tuning demands. The study also explores the role of a spectator field and its impact on the fine-tuning process. Our results indicate that although mechanisms involving a spectator field can circumvent the issue of fine-tuning parameters for PBH production, both multifield models and models with step-like features present promising alternatives. While fine-tuning involves multiple considerations, our primary objective is to evaluate various inflationary models to identify the one that most naturally explains the formation of PBHs. Energy production through non-conventional renewable sources allows progress towards meeting the Sustainable Development Objectives and constitutes abundant and reliable sources when combined with storage systems. From a financial viewpoint, renewable energy production projects withstand significant challenges such as competition, irreversibility of investments, high uncertainty levels, and considerable investment amounts. These facts make their financial valuation fundamental for all the agents involved. Using the Web of Science (WoS) and Scopus databases, a scientometric analysis was carried out to understand the methods that have been used in the financial appraisal of photovoltaic energy generation projects with storage systems. The present research project was developed from 268 studies published between 2013 and 2023; tools such as Bibliometrix 4.1.3, VOSViewer 1.6.19, and Tree of Science 0.0.1a9 were used. Two main findings stand out: (i) the most used methods in the literature are the traditional ones, and within them, the levelized cost of energy has been used with greater frequency; and (ii) there is an interest in analyzing the investments of these systems for residences within the framework of distributed energy generation. Two gaps were found in the literature: (i) the studies that were carried out have not comprehensively incorporated the financial challenges faced by these investments; and (ii) the evaluation of these projects has not been addressed from the perspective of a utility-based power generator. Meta-Analysis of the Safety and Efficacy of Direct Oral Anticoagulants for the Treatment of Left Ventricular Thrombus

Background: Literature on the preferred anticoagulant for treating left ventricular thrombus (LVT) is lacking. Thus, our objective was to compare the efficacy of DOACs versus warfarin in treating LVT. Methods: Databases were searched for RCTs and adjusted observational studies that compared DOAC versus warfarin through March 2024. The primary efficacy outcomes of interest were LVT resolution, systemic embolism, composite of stroke, and TIA. The primary safety outcomes encompassed all-cause mortality and bleeding events. Results: Our meta-analysis including 31 studies demonstrated that DOAC use was associated with higher odds of thrombus resolution (OR: 1.08, 95% CI: 0.86–1.31, p: 0.46). A statistically significant reduction in the risk of stroke/TIA was observed in the DOAC group versus the warfarin group (OR: 0.65, 95% CI: 0.48–0.89, p: 0.007). Furthermore, statistically significant reduced risks of all-cause mortality (OR: 0.68, 95% CI: 0.47–0.98, p: 0.04) and bleeding events (OR: 0.70, 95% CI: 0.55–0.89, p: 0.004) were observed with DOAC use as compared to warfarin use. Conclusion: Compared to VKAs, DOACs are noninferior as the anticoagulant of choice for LVT treatment. However, further studies are warranted to confirm these findings. Full article

Chatbots can have a significant positive impact on learning. There is a growing interest in their application in teaching and learning. The self-regulation of learning is fundamental for the development of lifelong learning skills, and for this reason, education should contribute to its development. In this sense, the potential of chatbot technologies for supporting students to self-regulate their learning activity has already been pointed out. The objective of this work is to explore university students’ interactions with EDUguia chatbot to understand whether there are patterns of use linked to phases of self-regulated learning and academic task completion. This study presents an analysis of conversation pathways with a chatbot tutor to enhance self-regulation skills in higher education. Some relevant findings on the length, duration, and endpoints of the conversations are shared. In addition, patterns in these pathways and users’ interactions with the tool are analysed. Some findings are relevant to the analysis of the link between design and user experience, but they can also be related to implementation decisions. The findings presented could contribute to the work of other educators, designers, and developers interested in developing a tool addressing this goal. Full article

Background and Objectives: The rise in global diabetes cases, reaching a staggering 529 million in 2021 from 108 million in 1980, underscores the urgency of addressing its complications, notably macrovascular ones like coronary artery, cerebrovascular, and peripheral artery diseases, which contribute to over 50% of diabetes mortality. Atherosclerosis, linked to hyperglycemia-induced endothelial dysfunction, is pivotal in cardiovascular disease development. Cytokines, including pentraxin 3 (PTX3), copeptin, lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)], and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9), influence atherosclerosis progression and plaque vulnerability. Inhibiting atherosclerosis progression is crucial, especially in diabetic individuals. Glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs), increasingly used for type 2 diabetes, show promise in reducing the cardiovascular risk, sparking interest in their effects on atherogenesis. This study sought to examine the effects of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) on biomarkers that indicate the instability of atherosclerotic plaques. These biomarkers include pentraxin 3 (PTX3), copeptin (CPC), matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9), and lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)]. Materials and Methods: A total of 34 participants, ranging in age from 41 to 81 years (with an average age of 61), who had been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus (with a median HbA1c level of 8.8%), dyslipidemia, and verified atherosclerosis using B-mode ultrasonography, were included in the study. All subjects were eligible to initiate treatment with a GLP-1 RA—dulaglutide. Results: Significant reductions in anthropometric parameters, blood pressure, fasting glucose levels, and HbA1c levels were observed posttreatment. Moreover, a notable decrease in biochemical markers associated with atherosclerotic plaque instability, particularly PTX3 and MMP-9 (p < 0.001), as well as Lp(a) (p < 0.05), was evident following the GLP-1 RA intervention. Conclusions: These findings underscore the potential of GLP-1 RAs in mitigating atherosclerosis progression and plaque vulnerability, thus enhancing cardiovascular outcomes in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
