What we’re about
Hi! We organize Boston-area events for enthusiasts of the Rust programming language, for every level of expertise from total beginner to seasoned Rustacean.
Rust is a user-friendly low-level programming language with a focus on security, reliability, and concurrency, while providing extreme performance in memory usage and execution speed.
We have two kinds of regular events: every week we have casual lunchtime get-togethers at a wide variety of locations in the Boston area, and once in a while we'll have a major evening event with catering and live presentations.
If you'd like to chat or get in touch with us, please join the Rust East Coast Discord server and find us in the #in-boston channel, or feel free to message the organizers here on Meetup directly.
All Boston Rust events are governed by the Rust Code of Conduct.
Upcoming events (3)
See all- All-day Rust Hackathon in Cambridge!Pierce Laboratory, Cambridge, MA
WHAT: A casual, all-day hackathon to work on Rust projects, or brush up on your Rust, or really to just hack on whatever you want! We're happy enough just to see you. :)
THEME: Our theme for this hackathon is "embedded devices", but that's just a suggestion to spark your imagination; if you don't care about embedded devices, then feel free to work on other stuff! We'll bring some boards to tinker with, and if you've got your own devices lying around gathering dust, please bring them too! We'll have some ideas for embedded projects (e.g. building a handheld game console), but also some ideas for non-embedded projects (e.g. Build Your Own Git ).
REQUIRED EXPERTISE: Very little! If you've never used Rust before or ever done any work on embedded devices before, we're happy to teach. A basic understanding of programming is all you need.
WHEN: Sunday, July 21. The event will stretch from 10 AM to 6 PM, but you don't need to be there the entire time; show up and stay for as long as your schedule permits!
WHERE: Pierce Laboratory on the MIT campus (building #1 in MIT lingo), right at the heart of the campus and convenient to the red line. We'll be in room 1-134 (which is on the ground floor). Enter through the door in Du Pont Court (the courtyard with the flagpole between the wings of building #1, off to the side of Killian Court (the big main courtyard from which you can see the Great Dome)). If the door is locked then leave a comment here until we let you in, or come knock on the window to room 1-134, which is two rooms to the right of the door. Or you can find your own way into the giant maze that is the main MIT campus (maybe that's part of the fun!).
SCHEDULE: Informal, we'll work on stuff in the morning, then we'll grab lunch and maybe do some lunchtime lightning talks, then work on stuff in the afternoon.
WHAT TO BRING: Bring a laptop, and if you have anything from a microcontroller to a Raspberry Pi lying around, bring it (and its cables) too!
OTHER BOSTON RUST EVENTS: We hold lunches at 18 different spots throughout Boston, Cambridge, and Somerville. We also do occasional large evening events. Check out our Upcoming Events page to find out more!
HOW TO GET IN TOUCH: If you have comments, questions, or proposals, feel free to message the organizers here on Meetup, or find us in the #in-boston channel on the Rust East Coast Discord: https://discord.gg/fuuqSds
