MS is highly heterogeneous, but has three main subtypes: relapsing forms of MS (RFMS), primary progressive MS (PPMS) and progressive relapsing MS (PRMS). RFMS can be further subdivided into relapsing remitting MS (RRMS) and secondary progressive MS (SPMS). Approximately 80% of patients with RRMS ultimately progress to SPMS (see Atlas of MS in Further information). Although patients with RRMS often have substantial inflammatory involvement, relapses — episodes of neurological symptoms followed by full or partial remissions — do not correlate with active inflammation. Progressive forms of MS are defined by continual worsening of disease without remissions and are usually associated with less inflammation.
