NumbersUSA collects certain information from you in order to send messages to elected officials on your behalf and provide you with focused opportunities for action. This privacy statement discloses what information we gather and how we use it.
Consistent with the Federal Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act of 1998 (COPPA), we will never knowingly collect personally identifiable information from anyone under the age of 13 without consent from the child’s parent or guardian.
We gather two types of information about users:
Information that you provide through optional, voluntary submissions, such as contact information to appear on messages you choose to send to elected officials, registration information to receive our action emails or the results from your participation in polls and surveys, or comments emailed to us.
Information that we gather through aggregate or indirect tracking. This information is collected to provide you with a more focused experience and help us better tailor our content and alerts to readers’ needs. It also helps us better understand the demographics of our audience to be more effective.
NumbersUSA uses any information voluntarily given by our users to enhance their experience on our network of sites, whether to provide interactive or personalized elements on the sites or to better prepare future content based on the interests of our users.
As stated above, we use information that users voluntarily provide to send out action emails and alerts and to enable users to send messages to elected officials and participate in polls and surveys. We send out action emails and newsletter alerts to subscribers on an irregular schedule based on their level of interest and the level of activism required to make a difference on an issue.
We also use tracking information to determine which areas of our sites users like and don’t like based on traffic to those areas. This helps us continue to build a better service for you. We track search terms entered in the Search function as one of many measures of what interests our users.
However, we keep track of which actions you have taken for the express purpose of reduce the occurrence of prompting you to take an action more than once and, to a lesser extent, to determine future actions you may be interested in.
NumbersUSA sometimes creates aggregate reports on user demographics and traffic patterns for sponsors and partners. This allows us to fundraise more effectively. Rest assured that these aggregate reports will never contain personally identifying information.
NumbersUSA uses the above-described information to tailor our content to suit your needs and help our sponsors and supporters understand our demographics. We will not share information about individual users with third parties except to comply with applicable law or valid legal processes or to protect the personal safety of our users or the public. NumbersUSA will, based on your expressed or activity implied interests may facilitate sharing of information to you from third parties.
NumbersUSA operates secure data networks protected by industry standard firewalls and password protection systems. All supplied information is transmitted via Secure Socket Layer (SSL) technology and stored in our databases which are physically located in a secure data center, only to be accessed by a limited number of staff and consultants who are authorized with special access rights to our systems and who are required to keep the information confidential. Our security and privacy policies are periodically reviewed and enhanced as necessary.
