With trapwave creeping into the U.K. mainstream (via his own material and that of contemporaries like D-Block Europe), London musician M Huncho saw a significant surge in popularity in 2019. Though it was singles like "Broken Homes" that earned him an international platform, it was his debut album, Utopia, that truly shined. The project was something of a defining statement for the subgenre, exemplifying Huncho's wavy crooning and highly textured instrumentals that made the album's sonics so intoxicating. Huncholini the 1st is a fundamentally different beast. While Utopia's spaced-out aesthetic cultivated a cohesive mood, the rapper's second album is more of a grab bag, merging traditional trapwave with explorations into melodic trap.
At its best, this shift opens some interesting avenues for Huncho to explore. "Eagles," a sequel to 2019's "Birds," proves perhaps the most compelling, with the rapper energizing his delivery for the fiery beat switch of Quincy Tellem's production. A positive inverse can be said of Headie One collaboration "Head Huncho," which sees Huncho pull Headie away from his drill roots for an exceptional vibe-driven duet. Despite these brilliant examples of diversity, the overall effect is one of homogenization. One of Utopia's strengths was its versatility within a very narrow subgenre; tracks like "Tranquility" and "Rock Bottom" pushed at vastly different ideas yet fit naturally together under the trapwave umbrella. Though Huncholini's traditional trap is often enjoyable, the repeated drum patterns and basic melodies lack the individualistic flair of Utopia's deep cuts. Lacking in the project-wide vibe of its predecessor, Huncholini feels fundamentally like a mixtape, its tracks bundled together with little thought to order and mood.
True to the mixtape format, the album's highs and lows are leagues apart. The rapper excels in pure trapwave: the late double bill of "Blow Off My Cover" and "Indulge" is Huncho at his best, stringing introspection and braggadocio together over woozy pads and bashful guitars. The aforementioned "Eagles," trap-driven "Dishonourable," and closer "Wait 'Til I Finish" are excellent, too, offering refreshing takes on Huncho's typical sonics. The project's low (the grimly titled "Pee Pee"), however, drops far lower than anyone could expect. While the track's sonics are far from memorable, it's the lyrics that prove its downfall. Bars like "When I bust my nut I go and take a pee pee," if not bad enough already, have their endings pitched up in wailing autotune, a trapwave mimicking of Michael Jackson's signature "hee hee." The result is arguably the largest quality drop of Huncho's work thus far: while "Thumb" and "Growth" are a far cry from his best, the questionable "Pee Pee" lands firmly as his worst. The rapper does find his footing despite this stumbling block, with promising explorations and trapwave gems scattered throughout the album, but overall Huncholini the 1st falls far short of the spaced-out excellence of its subgenre-defining predecessor.
