Ben Gernon

Conductor Ben Gernon attracted major attention at a young age, becoming principal guest conductor of the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra in 2017. He was one of the youngest people ever to have attained a top position with any British orchestra. Gernon was born in 1989. He attended the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where Sir Colin Davis was an influential teacher; he has also continued to work with Sian Edwards. Thanks to the unanimous recommendation of the jury, he won the Nestlé and Salzburg Festival Young Conductor's Award in 2013 and started making conducting guest appearances with top orchestras. Gernon was a Dudamel Fellow in 2013-2014, which entailed a conducting appearance with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl. He also guest conducted the Chicago Symphony Orchestra during that period, and upon his return to Britain, he was engaged for appearances with the BBC Symphony, the BBC Philharmonic, and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestras. In 2016, he made his recording debut on the Linn Records label, leading the Scottish Chamber Orchestra in an album of works by Peter Maxwell Davies. Gernon has appeared twice at the BBC Proms, once for a concert marking the 80th birthday of Maxwell Davies. In the late 2010s, Gernon's reputation spread across Europe; during the 2017-2018 season, he appeared with orchestras such as the Czech Philharmonic, the Oslo Philharmonic, the Munich Chamber Orchestra, and the Radio Symphony Orchestra Stuttgart, as well as with several British orchestras. His duties with the BBC Philharmonic included conducting a concert with pianist Richard Goode. Gernon has conducted Mozart's Don Giovanni and Rossini's The Barber of Seville with the Glyndebourne Touring Opera and has appeared with several opera companies on the European continent. In 2018, Gernon conducted the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra on the Hyperion label in a recording of piano concertos by Joseph Rheinberger and Bernhard Scholz, featuring pianist Simon Callaghan. He has also recorded for Signum Classics and Warner Classics (on the 2021 album The Immersive Experience), and in 2023, he was heard on the multi-conductor Naxos album Luke Bedford: In the Voices of the Living.
