Released a year and a half ago, Rogê’s album Curyman was like a gift tailor-made for fans of retro Brazilian music. It was the sixth album from this U.S. based Brazilian guitarist, and a love letter to the golden age of ’70s samba. However, no one goes on this journey to a lost musical paradise alone. Teaming up once again with American producer Tom Brenneck, legendary Brazilian arranger Arthur Verocai, and a handful of other impressive musicians, Rogê has found what he was looking for in Curyman: music evoking the beauty and grooves of ‘70s samba, without ever sounding like just a copy…and Rogê hasn’t looked back since. Curyman II is ( as is evidenced by the title) a follow-up to Curyman, and an amazing follow-up at that. It’s new and improved, with its lavish opening track simply entitled “Curyman.” Rogê, whose real name is Roger José Curry, is probably a little obsessive, a little egocentric, but rightfully so. This album will captivate you from head to toe, inside and out. A quick first listen will make you feel like dancing. A second, closer listen, focusing on its depth and intricacies might leave you dizzy. Behind each composition’s perfect simplicity (be it an original or a cover), these songs shine through thanks to their attention to detail, panoramic soundscapes, psychedelic beats, and balanced mix of richness and satisfaction. Rogê’s percussion, bass, keyboards, and acoustic guitar, alongside a choir of female voices, creates a soundscape that feels both timeless and fresh. He leaves nothing to chance here. Everything is in exactly the right place, yet still surprising, as if we had never heard this kind of music before. With Curyman II, Rogê and his team have created an album that stands alongside the best samba records of the ’70s. Not as a replica, but as a reimagination.
