It’s rather strange that Fred Hersch—undoubtedly one of the most prominent jazz pianists over the last 40 years—has never released music under the ECM label, which is well known amongst piano lovers for its exceptionally rich catalogue. Fortunately, The Song Is You has remedied this anomaly. There’s nothing spectacular or superficially ambitious about this ‘debut’, which presents the pianist in a duo (one of his favourite instrumental configurations), enjoying a free and impromptu conversation with another huge name, Italian trumpeter Enrico Rava. A very raw sound is revealed in this intimate recording. Despite being from different cultures and generations, the two musicians are united by the same love for jazz and its history. They spontaneously (re)discover their common ground by going back to basics: a good taste for melody and cantabile; harmonic refinement; a sense of attentiveness and understatement. This is a carefully selected repertoire, mixing free improvisations and original compositions, as well as a magnificent cover of Carlos Jobim (‘Retrato em Branco e Preto’), a handful of timeless classics (‘I’m Gettin Sentimental’, ’The Song Is You’) and two songs by Thelonious Monk (‘Misterioso’, ‘‘Round Midnight’). It’s an incredible release, and Fred Hersch puts his delicate style and knowledge of the science behind orchestral dynamics at the service of Enrico Rava’s stunning trumpet, which overwhelms with its controlled fragility and hedonistic sensuality as well as its playfulness and freedom. When all’s said and done, these two men have joyfully plunged into their art, creating an album that’s as simple as it is precious. They opt for sincerity without forsaking seduction, proving that the pursuit of beauty is the path to truth. © Stéphane Ollivier/Qobuz
