"Charm" is probably the characteristic that has come to best define Clairo's universe, since her first viral Youtube video from 2017. We then saw her in her teenage bedroom, serenely singing one of her compositions (Pretty Girl) to her webcam. With this aptly-named third album she gathers her qualities and takes a step forwards, almost leaving you thinking you're being offered a reiteration "Charm for Dummies." Although the lo-fi arrangements of her debut have been left behind(she is now associated with soul producer Leon Michels), the young American retains a freshness that makes her an undisputed queen of dreams. Her flutey timbre, pleasant melodies and delicate arrangements, all recorded in analogue, leave nothing to be desired on these 11 tracks of airy, soberly soulful pop, whose inspirations range from Carole King to Harry Nilsson. It's impossible not to think of Billie Eilish, with whom she shares a certain nonchalance. The Atlanta native embraces her attraction to retro airs (Echo), Burt Bacharach-style tempo breaks (Second Nature) and jazzy escapes (Terrapin, Juna).
