A l’aube de la quarantaine, Melody Gardot nous invite au plaisir nombriliste de jeter en sa compagnie un petit coup d’œil rétrospectif sur les quinze années déjà d’une carrière kaléidoscopique qui l’aura vu progressivement trouver sa voix et, tout en jouant malicieusement avec les codes du genre, considérablement dépoussiérer l’image de la chanteuse de jazz. Jonglant avec la chronologie pour piocher dans la riche matière des six disques studios qu’elle a fait paraître durant la période (depuis Worrisome Heart enregistré en 2016 jusqu’au tout dernier Entre eux deux, conçu en 2022 en étroite collaboration avec Philippe Powell) ainsi que dans quelques prestations en public (Live in Europe et Live in Paris), cette magistrale anthologie (re)compose en 24 pièces qui sont autant d’instantanés de son talent protéiforme, une sorte de portrait impressionniste de la chanteuse d’une grande justesse esthétique et psychologique.
Des séductions glamour propres à la “chanteuse de jazz” mystérieuse et sophistiquée (magistralement mise en scène par le grand producteur Larry Klein dans My One and Only Thrill et Sunset in Blue) aux échappées belles du côté du soul-rock de sa ville natale de Philadelphie (Currency of Man), en passant par l’exploration baroque dans The Absence des diverses traditions musicales des pays du monde où elle a séjourné (de l’Argentine au Portugal en passant par le Brésil), et la découverte de la chanson française qu’elle revisite ces dernières années avec beaucoup de sensibilité — Melody Gardot offre ici un aperçu exhaustif de l’étendue de ses talents d’interprète. On notera, en cadeau, la présence de deux inédits (le traditionnel La llorona et le splendide thème de Charlie Haden First Song agrémenté des mots d’Abbey Lincoln) sur lesquels la chanteuse, accompagnée seulement de Jaques Morelenbaum au violoncelle, Haden à la contrebasse et Gil Goldstein au piano, se montre tout simplement bouleversante de musicalité et de justesse émotionnelle. © Stéphane Ollivier/Qobuz

A l’aube de la quarantaine, Melody Gardot nous invite au plaisir nombriliste de jeter en sa compagnie un petit coup d’œil rétrospectif sur les quinze années déjà d’une carrière kaléidoscopique qui l’aura vu progressivement trouver sa voix et, tout en jouant malicieusement avec les codes du genre, considérablement dépoussiérer l’image de la chanteuse de jazz. Jonglant avec la chronologie pour piocher dans la riche matière des six disques studios qu’elle a fait paraître durant la période (depuis Worrisome Heart enregistré en 2016 jusqu’au tout dernier Entre eux deux, conçu en 2022 en étroite collaboration avec Philippe Powell) ainsi que dans quelques prestations en public (Live in Europe et Live in Paris), cette magistrale anthologie (re)compose en 24 pièces qui sont autant d’instantanés de son talent protéiforme, une sorte de portrait impressionniste de la chanteuse d’une grande justesse esthétique et psychologique.
Des séductions glamour propres à la “chanteuse de jazz” mystérieuse et sophistiquée (magistralement mise en scène par le grand producteur Larry Klein dans My One and Only Thrill et Sunset in Blue) aux échappées belles du côté du soul-rock de sa ville natale de Philadelphie (Currency of Man), en passant par l’exploration baroque dans The Absence des diverses traditions musicales des pays du monde où elle a séjourné (de l’Argentine au Portugal en passant par le Brésil), et la découverte de la chanson française qu’elle revisite ces dernières années avec beaucoup de sensibilité — Melody Gardot offre ici un aperçu exhaustif de l’étendue de ses talents d’interprète. On notera, en cadeau, la présence de deux inédits (le traditionnel La llorona et le splendide thème de Charlie Haden First Song agrémenté des mots d’Abbey Lincoln) sur lesquels la chanteuse, accompagnée seulement de Jaques Morelenbaum au violoncelle, Haden à la contrebasse et Gil Goldstein au piano, se montre tout simplement bouleversante de musicalité et de justesse émotionnelle. © Stéphane Ollivier/Qobuz
