Dès que la voix d’Abel Tesfaye alias The Weeknd retentit, difficile de ne pas penser à celle de Michael Jackson ; notamment sur I Feel It Coming, chanson élaborée avec Daft Punk, qui boucle ce troisième album studio… Mais pour cette cuvée 2016, le lover de Toronto ne se limite pas à cette filiation avec le roi de la pop. De figure culte et montante de l’underground R&B, The Weeknd s’est retrouvé assez rapidement au sommet des charts. Ce qui lui a permis de côtoyer les stars (ici Daft Punk mais aussi Kendrick Lamar, Future et, pour une superbe ballade érotico-sensuelle intitulée Stargirl Interlude, une certaine Lana Del Rey) et de penser à étoffer ses sons. On se laisse porter par cette pop mi-urbaine, mi-rêveuse, qui fait de l’œil à la new wave des années 80 (Secrets et son sample de Pale Shelter du duo Tears For Fears). Tout au long de Starboy, Tesfaye s’amuse beaucoup avec l’Auto-Tune, air du temps oblige. Sa force est aussi d’avoir conçu Starboy non pas comme une compilation de chansons éparses, mais comme un véritable album avec un début, un milieu et une fin. Bref, comme un trip total, avec ses variations et ses paysages éclectiques. Cette version deluxe ajoute trois remix de choix à la version originale Die for You avec Ariane Grande, Starboy de Kygo et Reminder avec A$AP Rocky et Young Thug. © MD/Qobuz
