The night has been a common subject in vocal music since madrigal times, and the world might not seem to be clamoring for another collection, but that is just what makes this 2024 release by Voces8 so appealing. The group, keeping its trademark silky sound intact throughout, brings it to bear on a remarkably wide variety of materials. Has there ever been another vocal ensemble that could program German late-late Romantic Max Reger and crossover postminimalist king Ludovico Einaudi together and have it make perfect sense? Voces8 also brings attention to some contemporary composers, such as Classic FM Rising Star Lucy Walker, ventures into Icelandic ambient territory with Sigur Rós, and expands the crossover choral repertory with a pair of sacred works from Korean composer Jung Jae-il, familiar to audiences from work on the films of Bong Joon-ho. Will this draw young enthusiasts of Korean culture to classical choral singing? Maybe, but the point is that a distinctive new flavor is added to the Voces8 mix, which now contains a whole range of sounds that seems to reveal something new at every turn and can appeal equally to those who want a relaxing choral listen and those attuned to the subtleties of choral art. These performances were recorded at a pair of London churches, but the joints are clean in the hands of producer Adrian Peacock, whose contributions here are great enough that he might be regarded as a ninth member of the group, which continues to go from strength to strength.
