There are many rock records that are profoundly dumb. And there are, of course, a much smaller number of records that are inarguably great. The Venn diagram of gloriously dumb albums that are also absolutely great, however, is a pretty narrow sliver, but it includes the debut albums by Weezer and the band whose iconic logo they repurposed as their own. Both Van Halen and Weezer represent—in very different ways—the pinnacle of great, dumb, rock 'n' roll from Southern California, as they merged glorious riffs, incredibly catchy melodies, jaw-dropping harmonies, and, most importantly, a sense of fun. Van Halen looked at the malaise of the late '70s and said "LET'S PARTY!"; Weezer looked at the peace, prosperity, and privilege of the early '90s and said ... "let's party." To be sure, Weezer was definitely inspired by the ethos and approach of indie and punk bands, but as Gen X kids weaned on arena rock (and AM Gold), they figured a way to embrace the irony their peers so adored while completely undermining it.

Thus, the ten songs on their self-titled debut album were witty and wry, but also unwilling to sacrifice the visceral pleasures of rock 'n' roll. The results appear gleeful and loose but also required a ton of practice and effort (and guitars, guitars, guitars) to get right. With group harmonies providing nearly as much impact as the thick guitar lines, Weezer revels in power-pop formalism while tweaking the formula by eschewing any guitar work that isn't a chunky riff. Tightly sequenced and honed to its maximum impact by Weezer leader Rivers Cuomo and producer Ric Ocasek, “the blue album” never comes close to wearing out its welcome and 30 years later, every song still somehow feels like a classic in its own way.

This 30th anniversary expanded edition manages to provide a considerable amount of perspective on just what went into Weezer's creation. Of course, the centerpiece is a remastered version of the album itself that further accentuates the everything-all-at-once dynamics of the set. Listeners hoping for a more subtle audiophile experience are probably looking in the wrong place, but an even more bracing presentation of the album is provided. Far more interesting is the inclusion of The Kitchen Tape, the demo cassette that the band made to get gigs (and ultimately get signed). They show a far more aggressive and dissonant approach to much of the album's material and some of the songs that didn't make the set, like "Paperface," are remarkably abrasive.
