La musique est une affaire de contrastes. Et dans ce domaine, Meek Mill excelle. Sur son cinquième album, le rappeur de Philadelphie alterne habilement entre la dureté d’une trap frontale et la profondeur des textes inspirés des affres de sa vie. Il y a chez lui quelque chose de résolument en phase avec le rap de son époque, ancré sans difficulté et sans artifice dans les tendances du moment. Que ce soit au niveau des productions, des voix et des thèmes, Expensive Pain est bien un album de 2021 puisqu’il se risque également à livrer des morceaux hors des clous, comme le superbe Me (FWM) en featuring avec A$ap Ferg. Sur une instru coproduite par Jahaan Sweet, Hollywood Cole et Boi-1da, il semble embrasser les sonorités actuelles tout en nous replongeant par instants au début des années 2010. Cet équilibre, ce contraste, est la base d’Expensive Pain. Comme lorsqu’il s’épanche dans le rap superficiel et jouissif sur Sharing Locations (en featuring avec Lil Baby et Lil Durk) pour, le morceau d’après, se faire profond et introspectif avec Expensive Pain.
