Sorti en 1981, Greatest Hits marquait les dix ans de Queen. Comme l’indique le titre, il s’agit d’une compilation de tubes. Evidemment, on y trouve les hits planétaires et hymnes calibrés pour les stades qui ont fait la réputation du groupe, de « Bohemian Rhapsody » à « We Are The Champions » - mais l’essentiel y est-il ? Tous les grands succès des années 1970 sont là, ainsi que ceux des années 1980 naissantes. Et c’est là le hic, car les morceaux issus de The Game (« Another One Bites The Dust », « Crazy Little Thing Called Love », « Play The Game ») ainsi que « Flash », qui annoncent le style des années 1980, déparent.
Qu’on les aime ou pas, ces quelques morceaux qui amorcent les années 80 sont de trop. Sans doute le groupe aurait-il dû lancer un an avant, et avant l’irruption des synthés sur The Game, un vrai best of. On y aurait trouvé les merveilleux morceaux hard rock « Keep Yourself Alive », issu du tout premier album, « I’m In Love With My Car » ou « Tie Your Mother Down », ou encore les délicieuses ballades « You Take My Breath Away » et « Spread Your Wings » - ou encore « The Millionnaire Waltz ». Bon allez, on ne va pas bouder notre plaisir : si Greatest Hits dévoile le côté le plus pop du groupe, il constitue une bonne initiation à Queen. Reste qu’il est toujours plus à conseiller de se rendre directement aux essentiels Sheer Heart Attack, A Night At The Opera et A Day At The Races.
