The first thing you notice about Post Malone's country album is that it's ridiculously stacked with big names—Nashville's top artists, songwriters and producers. The second thing is, Nashville has good reason to take him seriously. F-1 Trillion is not novelty; Malone comes across like a real fan and student of the genre. "California Sober" is co-written with duet partner Chris Stapleton and it shows—it's swampy Southern rock with bawdy, Jerry Reed hell-raiser humor, about picking up a con-artist hitchhiker in "some Daisies" who "drank up all my whiskey, blew down all my smoke." Absolutely belting it, the two sound like they're having a ball, and their oddball harmonizing is irresistible. "Pour Me a Drink," with Blake Shelton, is an earworm that proves Malone could do this full-time if he wanted; it's nice-guy country à la Riley Green and Thomas Rhett, and his characteristic tremolo thing works well here and on "Devil I've Been" (a bright, sweet number with Ernest, who helped write several songs). Hard-rocking country with furious fiddle, "Wrong Ones" will make you miss Tim McGraw, who cuts loose and sings the hell out of this—as does Malone. It's a co-write with Luke Combs, who is a great vocal match on both catchy "Guy for That" and "Missin' You Like This," a mid-tempo ballad with a big, rich chorus and Paul Franklin's primo pedal steel. At times, Malone is a chameleon—twisting and twanging his words with a little growl that sounds like his duet partner Hank Williams Jr. on "Finer Things," a catalog of rich-bitch trappings: "Platinum on my teeth and wagyu on my grill/ And George Jones crankin' out my Coupe DeVille … I'm in that deer blind with a diamond ring/ My Lambo' and my ammo's all camo green/ Yeah, I got an F-1 Trillion limousine." The song is made for line dancing and Malone sounds like he's grinning ear to ear. It's hard to tell if Malone is leaning into Morgan Wallen's style or the other way around on "I Had Some Help," a bit of go-down-easy country pop produced by Joey Moi. Malone also sounds like Wallen on "Losers," with Jelly Roll—two out-of-the-mainstream, excessively tattooed dudes who have become mainstream, singing "Let's hear it for the losers … the ones like you and the ones like me." Brad Paisley delivers Southern-rock guitar flourishes on "Goes Without Saying," Billy Strings turns "M-E-X-I-C-O" into a racing bluegrass hoedown, and Dolly Parton sounds good and strong on cute-as-a-button "Have the Heart." Lainey Wilson's sharp, strong wail is nicely tempered by Malone's husky, warm style on emotive "Nosedive." Sierra Ferrell is a little buried in the mix on "Never Love You Again," a honky-tonk waltz co-write with Rhett Akins, and flat "Hide My Gun" with Hardy is superfluous. But Malone shows he doesn't need to rely on his new pals, going solo on the mountain-music ditty "Right About You" and "What Don't Belong to Me," featuring an unexpectedly '80s R&B flavored chorus. © Shelly Ridenour/Qobuz
