Ollie Joseph
A leading candidate for the argument that popular music is post-genre, Ollie Joseph's eclectic discography has included quickfire verses over trap beats and rhythmic country sung in a raspy twang as part of a continuum he’s dubbed “mountain pop.” While it’s not entirely known how he got to his particular idea, it might have to do with his upbringing: he was born in Japan but raised in both Florida and Michigan before settling in Los Angeles, California.
Since 2016, he’s released a steady stream of singles and EPs, often with simple cover art and innocuous titles like “Grassroots” (2018) or “Ranch” (2019). Occasionally, a song would break out to a larger audience, like 2018’s “Mexico,” featuring Joseph's rapped/sung vocals over a mellow guitar hook, or the quickfire 2019 favorite “Elephants,” his most-streamed track to date. EPs like Left on Read (2019), Hot Streak (2020), and Hot Streak 2 (2021) covered similar thematic ground without repeating many of the tracks he’d released on his own.
Despite racking up streams with more beat-heavy songs like “Letterman Jocks,” “Espresso,” and “Well Spent,” it was clear that Joseph was ready to pivot toward a new style. Singles like “Heartland” (2022), “Busch Light” (2023), the Drewmat collaborations “Sunroof” and “Texas” (both released in 2023), and their 2024 EP Something for Your Girl all featured acoustic instrumentation and twangy vocals alongside Joseph's rapid-fire verses predicting country music's move further into the mainstream in 2020s, courtesy of savvy genre-benders like Florida Georgia Line, Post Malone, and Morgan Wallen.
