Once Twice Melody is probably Beach House’s most mature project yet. This perfectly matched duo came together in Baltimore in 2004 and chose to separate their album into 4 chapters, releasing each one as an EP a few months before the final work was released. A true dream-pop odyssey, this double album follows in the footsteps of 7, released in 2018, which critics claim to be their best work. No big surprises here, Alex Scally and Victoria Legrand – Michel’s niece – create airy melodies using effects and reverb (though sometimes they’re more stripped back, like the acoustic guitar at the beginning of Sunset), but they always feature shimmering synths and stretched out vocals. This filmless soundtrack focuses on everything that makes Beach House, well, Beach House. There are moments of passionate synthwave (New Romance), melancholy (Only You Know) and distortion (Masquerade). Chapters 1 and 2 are more ethereal and benefit from the work of sound engineer Alan Molder, who was key in the creation of 7, and has also worked on a bunch of shoegaze albums, such as The Loveless by My Bloody Valentine or Automatic by Jesus & Mary Chain. Entirely produced by the duo and recorded in Baltimore’s Apple Orchard Studios, the complete album is still as fresh and wistful as ever, even after almost 15 years in the industry.
