Tangerine Dream has been forced to evolve since the death of its mastermind and founder Edgar Froese in 2015. For this second album, Thorsten Quaeschning, Hoshiko Yamane and Ulrich Schnauss, accompanied by Paul Frick (Brandt Brauer Frick), have dipped into the digital archive to continue the adventure the Austrian began in 1967. Two tracks from this album were released on the 2021 EP Probe 6-8: the silky Continuum, which opens the album with avant-garde electronica (probably the most “pop” sounding track ever produced by Tangerine Dream), and Raum, an incredible 15-minute-long cosmic performance reminiscent of the band’s classics like Phaedra and Rubycon. Portico, with its mellow synths, is more similar in sound to Continuum, but a little bit more mental. However, to truly enter the stratosphere, you need to put on your headphones, close your eyes, and listen to the 19-minute-long track In 256 Zeichen, a celestial Odyssey taken to new heights by Hoshiko Yamane’s violins. Another noteworthy track is You’re Always On Time, which is inspired by the famous PPG Waven, a wavetable synth that was revolutionary at the time. Due to its distinctive textures, it captured the attention of the most experimental of musicians, from Jarre to Gary Numan. Edgar Froese may no longer be at the helm, but Tangerine Dream still leads the way for avant-garde electronic music. © Smael Bouaici/Qobuz
