If you’re an insomniac, this is for you. Not because it’s boring or lacklustre… quite the opposite, it captures the mysterious and magical nature of sleep, the temporary death from which we resurrect each morning.

Following in the footsteps of the incredibly successful album Official (released by ECM in 1994 with Norwegian saxophonist Jan Garbarek and The Hilliard Ensemble), this recording offers a series of meditations for voice and saxophone, alternating between classical and contemporary pieces. It also features compositions by solo saxophonist Christian Forshaw, whose piece In Paradisum is like a tribute to—arguably even a recreation of—Allegri’s Miserere.

The mesmerising sound of the saxophone blends into the stunning vocals of the seven singers from the Tenebrae choir, directed by Nigel Short. Their voices beautifully intertwine with the melismas of the music composed by Hildegard von Bingen, Thomas Tallis, Tomás Luis de Victoria and Antoine Brumel. The work of these great composers serves as a beacon of light which guides the contemporary compositions on this recording. © François Hudry/Qobuz
