Best known for his song Flow my tears and the lugubrious pavans he composed on its melody, which were published in 1604 as Lachrimae, or Seaven Teares, John Dowland is the exemplar of Elizabethan poetic melancholy. This 2018 ATMA release by lutenist Nigel North and the viol consort Les Voix Humaines presents the entire publication, which includes additional pavans, galliards, and almands, and creates a compelling portrait of Dowland, reinforcing the image conveyed in his personal motto, Semper Dowland, semper dolens ("Always Dowland, always doleful"). North takes solo turns, playing the coranto Were every thought an eye, Dowland's Adew for Master Oliver Cromwell (an uncle of the later ruler of the Commonwealth) and the Lachrimae pavan for lute solo, yet for the most part he supplies an understated accompaniment to the consort that gives definition to its vibrant but sometimes hazy sonorities. The controlled recording in Église Saint-Augustin, Mirabel, Québec clarifies the textures, though the church's acoustics provide just enough resonance to enhance the ensemble's warm sound without softening its edge.
