Auf „Understanding”, dem lange erwarteten Nachfolgealbum des vielgelobten „Melody A.M.“, hat das norwegische Electronica-Duo Röyksopp seinen atmosphärischen Sound noch weiter verfeinert. Torbjørn Brundtland und Svein Berge konzentrieren sich hier auf vielen Tracks auf eher zugängliche Popstrukturen. „Only This Moment” ist eine ansteigende Pet Shop Boys-ähnliche Tanznummer, und „49 Percent“ wagt sich in zeitgenössisches R&B-Territorium vor. „Follow My Ruin“ hingegen wurde von den '80er Jahren inspiriert und ist reichlich versehen mit funkigem Bass und Synthie-Trommelwirbel. Natürlich gibt es aber auch vieles, das Fans ihres vorherigen lebendigen Albums gefallen wird, insbesondere das pulsierende „Beautiful Day Without You“ und das sanft dahinschlurfende „Someone Like Me“. „The Understanding” ist ein Aufbruch, aber keine komplette Kehrtwende. Vielmehr enthüllt es neue Seiten von Röyksopp, ohne auf die träumerische, keyboard-betonte Ästhetik, die mit der Gruppe assoziiert wird, zu verzichten.
