Mit ihrer Mischung aus Glam Rock und Hard Rock waren Mott the Hoople in gewisser Weise das fehlende Bindeglied zwischen der Psychedelia der 60er Jahre und der Punk-Welle, die zehn Jahre später das Vereinigte Königreich überrollte. Aber die Band hatte es nicht leicht, kommerziellen Erfolg zu erzielen, bis David Bowie ihnen 1972 den Song All the Young Dudes schenkte. Diese Glam-Rock-Hymne wurde zu einem Riesenhit, der die Charts anführte und die Karriere der Band wieder in Gang brachte. Es folgte das gleichnamige Album, das weitere bekannte Titel wie Sweet Jane und One of the Boys enthielt. Die darauf folgenden Alben Mott (1973) und The Hoople (1974) festigten ihren Status. Interne Spannungen und Veränderungen innerhalb der Band führten jedoch 1974 zur Auflösung, als Sänger und Gitarrist Ian Hunter beschloss, die Band zu verlassen. Trotz ihrer kurzen Karriere ist der Einfluss von Mott the Hoople bis heute ungebrochen: Ihre Musik hat zweifellos einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Glam-Rock-Bewegung geleistet.
