Mo Kenney

With lyrics that are alternately searching and illustrative, the songs of Mo Kenney meet at the crossroads of indie folk, pop, and rock. After releasing an acoustic self-titled debut in 2012, the Canadian expanded her palette with electronics and full-band arrangements on 2014's In My Dreams. She continued to enrich her sound with driving indie and retro rock, dreamy indie pop, and more on 2017's The Details. After dialing back arrangements for 2021's solo Covers, she returned to lusher form on 2024's stylistically diverse From Nowhere. Kenney learned guitar at the age of 11 and went on to develop an interest in artists such as Death Cab for Cutie, Led Zeppelin, and Elliott Smith throughout her teens. By the age of 16, she was writing her own songs, her lyrics being influenced by the picturesque nature of director Wes Anderson's films. Shortly after recording some demos at a studio in Halifax, she met fellow Nova Scotia-based musician Joel Plaskett (formerly of Thrush Hermet), who was impressed with the caliber of her songwriting. Plaskett co-wrote and produced her eponymous debut, which saw release in 2012 via Canadian indie label Pheromone Recordings. The album garnered positive reviews and was nominated for the Rising Star Recording of the Year Award at the East Coast Music Association Awards in 2013. Later that year, the track "Sucker" was awarded the SOCAN Songwriting Prize for Best Song by an Independent Artist. 2013 saw more success for Kenney as she scooped up three Nova Scotia Music awards for Female Artist of the Year, New Artist Recording of the Year, and Pop Recording of the Year before winning the latter at the 2014 ECMA Awards. She released her sophomore effort, In My Dreams, in September 2014. The release boasted a more layered sound palette and sleeker production than the minimal folk of her debut and was once again produced by Plaskett. Kenney went on to promote the album with a nationwide tour and received the ECMA Pop Recording of the Year Award once again. She then got to work on her third full-length -- titled The Details -- which arrived in September 2017. It saw her expand her sound even further, including into dreamy indie pop and driving indie rock territories. In early 2021, Kenney stripped things back for Covers, which included versions of songs by Big Star, the Magnetic Fields, Guided by Voices, and others. Ramping arrangements back up to lusher soundscapes, the subsequent singles "With You" and "Evening Dream" appeared on her fifth album, 2024's From Nowhere. Recorded with prior collaborators including Plaskett and Rose Cousins, it was recorded, engineered, and mixed by Thomas Stajcer at Plaskett's Fang Studios in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.
