Tate McRae's third album opens with a warning: "Nah, seriously, get your hands off my man." Right away, you know that Tatiana (her alter ego) is in control. Beyoncé has Sasha Fierce, Gaga had Jo Calderone, Nicki Minaj has countless onstage alter egos; McRae, who has described herself as a "pretty reserved Canadian," slips into this "feisty" and "obnoxious" (her words) character to leverage dance-floor sex appeal. And Tatiana comes with an A-list army: producer Ryan Tedder, guest stars including McRae's boyfriend Kid Laroi ("I Know Love"), and hit-making songwriters like Julia Michaels and Amy Allen (who have credits on Sabrina Carpenter's biggest hits as well as that aforementioned opener, the slinky slow roll "Miss possessive"). Their aim is true on So Close to What, but sometimes McRae's own firepower is a little lackluster. The best: "Sports car," a high-adrenaline fairground ride bumping with sirens, snaky rhythm and shake-rattle-roll bass. You can sense the cardio sweat dripping off McRae's whispered chorus—Ying Yang twins style—as she postures like early aughts Britney and Xtina. There's more of that nasty girl vibe on "It's ok I'm ok," complete with a rap breakdown and low-end like a door slamming over and over. Glycerine-smooth Tedder pulls out all the electropop stops: streaking whistle, echo effect and papercut-crisp drums on "2 hands"; a whirring siren and booming bass for dancefloor-ready "Dear God," which finds McRae asking for release from the spell a boomerang ex has over her ("Dear God, get his handprint out of my back/ Taking "amazing" out of our sex"). But the singer can sound bored when she applies a gauzy style on songs like "Signs" and "Revolving door," and she lets an amped-up Flo Milli steal the show on "bloodonmyhands." Co-written with Emile Haynie (Bruno Mars, Camila Cabello) and mixed by the excellent Manny Marroquin (Kendrick Lamar, Post Malone), R&B baby maker "Purple lace bra" is made to play loud; McRae starts off with a knock-out punch—"I was singing! I was screaming!"—before floating off into a sleepy chorus. But that soft touch makes sense on "Nostalgia," the album's stripped-down, acoustic-guitar closer. © Shelly Ridenour/Qobuz
