The evolution of Tyler, the Creator as an artist could be considered a maturation, winding from his early teenage-provocateur tendencies through a series of personal and creative revelations that added new facets to both his music and his persona. Yet, this growth also comes with uncertainty: past mistakes becoming echoes that stir more regret with each reverberation, the accumulation of experiences fueling a pervasive sense of anxious unpredictability, the self-consciousness that, for a public figure, is often accompanied by a fear of the loss of that actual self. Chromakopia shows Tyler diving deep into these subjects to examine his problems with a sense of empathetic catharsis, where his struggles lead him to ruminate on other peoples' struggles, too. Sometimes they're familial: recordings of his mother position her as an alternately motivating, morally instructive, and apologetic presence throughout, culminating in their devastating late-album reckoning with Tyler's resemblance to his absent father on "Like Him." Sometimes they're romantic, like the cosmic Bill Withers vibe of "Judge Judy," which shifts unexpectedly from a kink-positive reminiscence of a youthful fling to a tragic but reverent memorial for his partner. And sometimes, like on "Take Your Mask Off," it's omnidirectional—a confrontation with false lives that encompass middle-class gangbanger wannabes, self-loathing gay preachers, dream-deferring tradwives, and ultimately his own superstar-ambitious self.

Chromakopia runs through a conceptual framework where Tyler as "St. Chroma" attempts to maintain a false facade that can't fully conceal a neurosis that's more concerning and more honest than the front he puts on. He repeatedly boasts of owning a LaFerrari that he eventually admits in "Tomorrow" isn't much of a substitute for a family of his own, and offers an altruistic perspective on his polyamory ("Darling, I") that runs directly into the stark reality of what happened when he caused an unplanned pregnancy ("Hey Jane," which is vivid from the perspective of both partners). The way Chromakopia works through these contradictions and wrestles with his identity is borne out in a next-level musicality. Tyler's incredible versatility as a rapper with melodic range is emotive whether he's whispering, growling, keening in falsetto or belting out get-hype emphasis. That carries through to his production, too, which evokes everything from Neptunian synth-funk (the "Drop It Like It's Hot"-evoking "Darling, I") to Alchemical stoner metal (the Zamrock-goes-Sabbath "Noid") to linebacker-impact future-crunk ("Sticky," which strips Polow da Don-style drumline maximalism to a T-1000 skeleton). He's not alone in this unstable place—choice guest verses by Doechii ("Balloon"), ScHoolboy Q ("Thought I Was Dead"), and a GloRilla/Sexyy Red/Lil Wayne confab ("Sticky") bolster his more confident moments—but Tyler has mastered the ability to make his own self feel like he's carrying a whole squad's worth of insights. © Nate Patrin/Qobuz
