Of course she’d wait to turn 46 before coming out with her first album. It goes without saying that Marea Stamper, better known as The Blessed Madonna, hasn’t had a linear career. She earned her place in the music industry through the rave scene of the American Midwest, becoming well-known as the first ever female director of Smart Bar, one of Chicago’s most iconic electronic music clubs. She became a media figurehead in 2016, just before the MeToo movement, after having become a prominent voice by calling out the sexual harassment and sexist discrimination that women have historically faced in the DJ industry. Beyond advocacy, she’s widely celebrated for her euphoric house mixes, which have made her a go-to name in electronic music.
For this first album, The Blessed Madonna has set her sights high, delivering an ambitious collection of 20 tracks, plus interludes. It sometimes feels more like the work of an expert producer, rather than a DJ. The album includes first-class featured guests like Kylie Minogue on the single “Edge of Saturday Night,” a nostalgic throw-back to the ‘90s dance music that the American DJ grew up on. In terms of influences, you’ve got synthpop, R&B, a bit of ghetto house…yet it’s clearly Chicago disco and house music that dominate the sound, highlighted on tracks like “Brand New,” “Count On My Love,” and “Serotonin Moonbeams,” featuring the Ed Banger label’s former star Uffie. The album also explores other styles, from the pure, unadulterated soul on “Secretariat”, to the ‘90s rave-inspired homage track “Happier,” featuring Clementine Douglas, a British singer born in 1991—a fitting nod to the era The Blessed Madonna draws from. There’s not a single filler track to be found on this decidedly feel-good album, in spite of the personal losses that the producer experienced during its production. There are plenty of standout tracks, including the high-energy “Somebody’s Daughter” featuring Kareen Lomax, and Danielle Ponder’s singing on “Carry Me Higher,” which beautifully blends Chicago house and folk.
